Re: St. Augustine TARR in San Antonio?
My understanding is that oak wilt is also spread by a beetle that travels from tree to tree looking for sap. If it gets oak wilt disease on it and travels to find sap on an open wound, it can pass the disease "through the air" like that. That is the reason for painting where you cut limbs back. How...

Re: St. Augustine TARR in San Antonio?
I'm not far from you. I'm in Castle Hills. Looks like root rot to me. Obviously once a week is better than that 3x a week nonsense the previous owner was doing but it's still too often for most of the year. David can clarify but I think it's once a month with temps below 70, once every three weeks w...

Re: Homemade Agralawn Crabgrass Killer?
Wow, that's awesome! Thanks, David!! I will start rolling my own once the bottle runs out. Maybe this is a topic for another thread but this has me thinking... labor aside, is there an advantage to spraying weeds with a contact killer vs. pulling a weed (assuming you get the roots?) The sprayed weed...

Re: Lawn Renovation Time
Usually I have a lot to say, but you have it covered. As for watering, you can do it every 6 hours, but the idea is to moisten only the top of the soil under the sod. If it gets mushy, you watered far too much. It might be every 8 hours or every 12 hours works better. Stay flexible with that, and k...

Lawn Renovation Time
Hey ATY, Spring is here! Time to renovate my St. Augustine!! Here's what my 3500 sq. ft. backyard currently looks like: I have a 1200 sq. ft. two-toned lawn. Half annual ryegrass (400 sq. ft.) and half thinned out mystery St. Augustine (700 sq. ft.). Then I have portions of bare soil where some dead...

Re: 2021; what Did You Do On Your Lawn Today?
We had a little rain last week and spots in my St. Augustine have gone chlorotic thanks to my high pH. I spread some Texas Greensand at 10lbs./1k.

Well that settles it. If cinnamon bark is $7-8/lb., I'll just keep using this stuff. It works and is safe for my dog!

Re: Ditched TruGreen - Doing It Myself
Congrats on ditching TG! Definitely do that soil test that Morph is recommending. I ditched the lawn services last year and doing the test was an eye opener for me. I've heard that liquid iron applications can be used to kill moss but it's probably better to address the drainage issue that's causing...

Sure sounds and looks like earthworm castings to me. They always pop up after a rain here too. Enjoy the free aeration!

Homemade Agralawn Crabgrass Killer?
I had a serious crabgrass infestation last year in my backyard because I'd neglected my lawn for 4 years prior. This year I put down pre-emergent (not organic... I know...) but I still have some crabgrass popping up. I picked up Agralawn Crabgrass Killer the other day and it's doing a great job! Rea...

Re: 10-10-10 Organic Fert
It sounds like the main thing you're looking for is something that's balanced. With an organic you're not going to find percentages that high so you'll just need to use more pounds on the ground. Medina's Growin' Green is fairly close to balanced and then you'd just use a more to achieve the same am...

Re: Sod and Pre-Emergents?
Okay, that makes sense. I wanted to cut out the old grass so the new sod would be more level with the existing grass. I thought the pre-m disturbance would just be an added bonus. I applied 3 lbs./1k sq. ft. of Sunniland Dithiopyr 0-0-7. I was out in the lawn yesterday and I swear I saw prills that ...

So you're saying there's a chance!?
Would you mind elaborating on what you mean by "root trimming is a thing"?
Thanks!

Sod and Pre-Emergents?
Hi, I currently have a two-faced lawn in my backyard. There's an existing 700 sq. ft. patch of St. Augustine that has been there since I bought the house plus a temporary annual ryegrass lawn that's about 400 sq. ft. In between them is a nice little patch of poa :x When my soil temps hit 55* in Janu...

Re: How Do I Deal With Live Oak Leaves?
I think the tricky thing here is that with St. Augustine, I'll be mowing at 4". So there's no way it'll ever touch these leaves or even suck them up since they fall down through the canopy. I'm paranoid that it's going to choke the grass out. Maybe dchall_san_antonio will chime in since I know he's ...

It's now March 1 and I'm seeing bits of green in my St. Augustine down here in San Antonio. I thought for sure it was a goner. Fingers crossed most of it comes back strong and healthy!

How Do I Deal With Live Oak Leaves?
Hey Warm Season Folks, I'm in north central San Antonio, TX and in my front yard I have 3 big Red Oaks. They drop medium size, easy to mow leaves in the fall/winter. This year I mulched those into the lawn and also shredded them with a Worx leaf mulcher and added them to beds. That seemed to be a gr...
