Northern GA K31 Summer Mow Height?
Atlanta, GA I have a backyard of K31 - the area gets a decent amount of sun, enough for the grass to grow well and a lot of rain. The grass does not need watering, the rain keeps the yard well watered. Enough that I have occasional mushrooms growing around the yard, not many, only a few. Big caps, 4...

K31 Germination and Growth
I seeded an entirely bare backyard with approximately 70 pounds of K31 and a application of starter fertilizer nearly 4 weeks ago. The Pennington seed tag states 85% germination and approximately 50% of the weight is seed coating. Therefore I dropped about 35 pounds of seed. The seed germinated quic...

Re: Newly Established Tall Fescue - When Should I Overseed to Fill-In Gaps
Some of the spots are 4-10 inches, but not many. The thin areas just look weird since the rest are pretty full. At this point, how long should I let it grow before mowing? To me, 14 day old grass is too fragile to mow. Someone on Reddit/Lawncare suggested I mow to strengthen the seedlings. At this p...

Newly Established Tall Fescue - When Should I Overseed to Fill-In Gaps
Roswell, GA. I seeded my backyard 13 days ago with Pennington Tall Fescue (K31). Most of the seedlings are 2-3 inches tall today. I dropped approximately 60 pounds of seed with a Scotts Turf Builder broadcast spreader set at 15 per the Pennington instructions for seeding a new lawn. Two passes at a ...

Walking on Newly Seeded Area
I seeded a large portion of my back yard last Saturday (09/24) with K31. With no irrigation, I hand water with a hose making sure to broadcast the water as evenly as possible. Due to the size of the seeded area, my options for reaching the far-side is limited to walking on the seeded area. Watering ...

I am using a Honda hrx217 set to 3.5. It seems to do better when I cut it @ 3.5 and bag the clippings.

Re: Tall Fescue Seeded in September Dying Off in June
I can't tell if it is overwatered or underwatered. My next door neighbor also planted his @ the same time with a RTF (Rhizomatous Tall Fescue) seed. I used a mix of Pennington Rebels and Sun and Shade. Mine is a mix of Fescues ... I mowed barefoot yesterday. The Fescue in the back felt light and wis...

Tall Fescue Seeded in September Dying Off in June
Alpharetta, GA - back yard, shaded, gets 4-6 hours of sun. I seeded my backyard again last fall. The Fescue was doing great until about a month ago when I noticed that it would lay down after mowing (4 inches) and not spring back. Taking a closer look, the finer blades of grass were withered and dyi...

Alpharetta GA - When to Spring Re-Seed Fescue
My entire back yard was seeded with Fescue last October. It is pretty dense all for a few areas. I would like to re-seed to fill in the gaps this spring.

Re: When To Plant Fescue in Alpharetta GA
Today is two weeks since seeding. There is a lot of germination, but it is spotty. Several areas look as-if I missed the area, no seed, but I did not. I was very thorough in seeding and hand seeded where I thought the broadcast spreader may have seeded lightly. The gaps are in a row, but random thro...

Re: When To Plant Fescue in Alpharetta GA
I seeded last week, a mix of Pennington and Scotts, both fescue mixes. I added the Scotts since it is white coated and easier to see during distribution and on the ground. I have a heck of a time seeing the dark green Pennington seed on the ground. There is already a blanket of sprouted seed everywh...

flyin-lowe - it is an iregularly shaped yard, about 45 feet wide, 12 deep on one side and 40 on the other side. I can water, and did water earlier. It was too hot for the not yet established seedlings. There was plenty of water.

Re: When To Plant Fescue in Alpharetta GA
PW405, thank you for the detailed feedback. I thought since the area has no grass growing that tilling would be a good idea to loosen the soil. No steam roller conventions

Why do you not recommend tilling if the dirt is compacted? I did till in May but it has compacted quite a lot since then.

Re: When To Plant Fescue in Alpharetta GA
Not only will I till but rake and smooth, not chunks or hills. The tiller depth is only a few inches and it give me another opportunity to pull out rocks, till under weeds, and make for a nice smooth bed for seeds.

When To Plant Fescue in Alpharetta GA
Looking for advice on when to plant Fescue in Alpharetta, GA. Earlier this year, mid-May, I tilled my shaded back yard, fertilized, planted Fescue, and covered the area with wheat straw. The seeds germinated and the yard looked great - until the heat rolled in. Now it's entirely dead, not a blade of...

New Fescue Started 8 Weeks Ago Laying Over and Dying
Alpharetta GA - back yard & heavily shaded. I planted Tall Fescue about 8 weeks ago and have mowed several times now ~ 3.5 to 4 inches. After seeding, I covered the entire area with wheat straw to help w/moisture retention. The area was hit with starter fertilizer. Before the last week of moderate r...
