Re: Drought stress or fungus?

Repeated shallow watering can leave the lower depths dry as a bone. I don't see any lesion on the green blades in your pictures so my guess is your roots are starving for H2O. Give that lawn a nice deep watering before you leave. As much as will soak in to replenish the soil to capacity.

Re: 2020: What Did You Do On Your Lawn Today?

Yesterday I worked on rut repair from the snow plow guy. Only had to have the snow pushed back once but he made multiple passes. Will probably end up doing a little bit of filling in as some of the ruts are fairly deep. Gotta source 0-0-50 . Sent an email to the local farmers exchange's agronomy cen...

Re: Question for Andy

I'll put down bag rate at green up or shortly thereafter if I miss the winterizer app. Bag rate around Memorial day and again the middle of June. Then start the fall feeding frenzy around the middle of August. Overly lush fast growing grass causes more issues than I am willing to deal with. Just my ...

Greg that's coming in nicely. Good looking property too. Hey, I'd love to see a pic of the front reno from back in 2014 when I did mine as well.

I'd demand to see the label off the bag of seed. Might or might not be to your benefit. Even if it's good stuff don't tell em, otherwise Pre-M!

Re: Root Growth/Development relative to temperature

Something that is pointed out in the graph and caught my attention is root growth in spring before the flush. With cool spring temps your grass may look fine despite a lack of adequate soil moisture for root growth. Making a note on the calendar to pay attention to soil moisture next spring.

Re: My neighbor hates his grass (weeds)

I routinely apply pre-emergent control at least 10 feet in every direction from my lawn. One side gets mowed fairly regularly. The other? forget about it until the village gets after them. It takes them half the day to chop down the weeds when they do mow and it's not a large lawn. The two lawns acr...

When I feel it's starting to get close I'll read this soil temp in the morning and late afternoon to get an average.' It's also nice to compare with MSU's MAWN sites. Here's yours for SE Michigan.

Re: No winterizer app this year

I may be in a similar situation ... Mowed on Sunday the 5th, had clippings. Mowed again on Sunday the 12th (two days ago), still had clippings, though growth has really slowed down. Ground temps at the four-inch depth are dropping like a rock here (mid-30s) and today is wet. Not raining but misty. ...

Re: No winterizer app this year

When you say “N conversion” are you talking an organic? I don’t think that would apply to a synthetic like urea. Heck I’m still waiting for my 2-3 week period to open up so I can put some down. I may have misunderstood your question/comments but I wouldn’t think it’s too late. I’m on a mobile devic...

Re: No winterizer app this year

Sorry for the vague answer to your question in my prior post. I've always held that soil temps in the 40 to 45 deg range were optimal at least for my area for good results from a winterizer app. UP north for me that period typically lasts a couple weeks, although in recent years has lasted as long a...

At what soil temp do roots stop taking in N?
Probably depends on the soil biology. Some soil critters could still be active near freezing, but doubt there is much N conversion going on at that temp.

Root growth slows as temps approach 40 deg.

No winterizer app this year

No winterizer app this year. Top growth ceased and soil temps plummeted to 35 F. Very doubtful the roots would be able to use N at this point.

What a different kind of fall we are having. :|

No, other than they will be a wet single mess to deal with.
LOL yeah thought of that, but it shouldn't take long for them to dry once spread out on the lawn.

Mulching leaves in spring?

Due to the quick onset of winter it looks like I will have to bag any remaining leaves and put them on the garden for now. There is a good chance the snow will melt off tomorrow, but from past experience attempting to mulch wet leaves into the lawn doesn't work out well. So the question is, are ther...

Re: 2017: What did you do on your lawn today?

Not grass related but have switched over to winter tires in anticipation of a heavy 2017/2018 winter snow season. Will see if my gut instincts are right. LOL.
