Re: New cool season turfgrass species: "TTRF"

Tall Fescue has been reclassified as part of the Ryegrass family or complex. It happened in the past 10 or 15 years I think. Reason? The two species are compatible and can be interbred because they’re closely related. So it doesn’t surprise me you can cross them easily. And the Meadow Fescue species...

And here is all the genetic info you could want, from the patent:

Should answer anyone's questions...if you have time and effort to follow all the crosses.

Re: Early treatment for Winter weeds

Get them before they seed. Use Triclopyr ester instead of the amine formulation in cool weather. But as Morph said, nature ultimately dictates the speed of the kill. I started spraying glyphosate on spots just recently, but won't see results for a while.

Re: New cool season turfgrass species: "TTRF"

I hear you guys. I'm all for this, but I'm not sure why it would have any advantages over PR or Fescue, since it's a hybrid of the two. The limit is already there. Hey Morph, Are you still considering going TTTF in some areas this Fall? You had mentioned it as possible and were asking me about fine ...

New cool season turfgrass species: "TTRF"

TTRF is here! Also called turf type Festulolium, this is a hybrid species bred from Fescue and Ryegrass. The grower is calling it "American Ryegrass" instead. (Whereas Perennial Ryegrass has been called "English Ryegrass" according to Beard, 1973. The new cultivar in this species is called "Minutema...

New Pre-M AI / mode of action in the works

There is supposedly a new pre-emergent active ingredient in the works, called Pethoxamid. It's not on the market just yet, but the research has been done. This is important because everything else we have for cool season lawns (Dithiopyr, Prodiamine, Pendimethalin, Benfluralin, and Trufluralin) all ...

Velocity Herbicide coming back

I was recently informed that Velocity is coming back on the market. It was discontinued around 2017. The new product will be a liquid suspension concentrate. It will be labeled for use in home lawns, but not on KBG due to higher risk of damage. Poa Trivialis and Poa annua are two of the main target ...

Possible advanced technique (Triv) idea/query

I have had good results with Sulfosulfuron (Certainty--or the branded generic "Sertay" which is labeled for cool season use) insofar as I have not done a lot of damage to my good grass with it. But I've had at best only fair results as far as Triv control. Also, since Group 2 herbicides are highly s...

Re: TTTF Fertilizer & Pre Emergent Schedule

CA is different than the Northeast/Midwest. Most persnickety lawn people in CA do feed small amounts through the Winter. With the temps you have, you can often safely continue at low rates. You'll eventually learn how many applications you need after a few years of doing it, and be able to predict w...

^Our Winters are likely similar to how your area's were 20-30 years ago. We are 6b, but not at all far away from 7a...maybe a 20-25 min drive down the main road.

Re: How Many Times Did You Mow?

Hey oze. Since I keep track, I was able to count them up. I'm at or just under 40 mows total for this past year in the main front. Final mow for the year was just a couple of days ago (12/2/23). I use PGRs. I have a lot of Ryegrass like you. My soil is not deficient in any macros. I fertilize with r...

Re: Beast time to overseed TTTF in the south?

In my area, mid to late August (up to early Sept. for non-KBG) is usually best. In talking with a lot of members from TN, NC, Southern VA, etc., I've concluded that those areas are usually offset from mine by one full month in Fall in terms of weather. In other words, everything weather and plant-wi...

New USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map (1991 to 2020 data) released

Has anyone seen the new map yet? I just saw it last night. I'm glad they updated it. My takeaways: Basically, the zones continue to move Northward, and the "transition zone" has definitely moved North...it appears that parts of coastal RI/MA/LI now have some Zone 7b areas. Nothing surprising...just ...

Re: Using Sodium Carbonate (washing soda) to clean sprayer - questions

Thanks. Can't really go down the drain, because the residual chems from the sprayer that would get removed are not good for the pipes and the wastewater treatment system. Save it for hazardous waste? Seems like a lot of work. Next time you pop in... How much extra water would need to be added (in ga...

Using Sodium Carbonate (washing soda) to clean sprayer - questions

I've never properly cleaned my sprayers yet. Stuff builds up over time, though. I'm thinking of picking up some "washing soda", which is the exact same thing..."sodium carbonate...not bicarbonate or baking soda...as tank cleaner). It's a white powder, I believe. Main issue is, what do you do with th...

Re: Fungicide PGR Effect

Velocity is another one you use that acts as a PGR (and fungicide). It's not a good quality PGR, but it definitely reduces growth significantly for three weeks or so. I've seen it classified as a Class C PGR. I made use of the effect this year. Also, no dollar spot appeared on the area treated with ...

Re: Later Summer Lawn Quality

Carbohydrates are lowest right now, so any continuing Summer stress can rapidly lower turf quality this time of year. Keep the blades sharp, fungicides at the ready just in case, and start fertilizing again as soon as your weather permits. This is a great time of year for the high lift blade you men...

Re: Fungicide PGR Effect

Hey oze. Great observation! I was actually just talking with an expert PGR user on this exact topic. He said that on short maintained turf, the growth suppression from Propiconazole (measured in clipping reduction) is likely about 18%, and the duration of that being around 400 to 600 growing degree ...
