Re: Seed selection help

My predominantly perennial rye lawn looked incredible in the spring, until about July 1st. We basically had high heat and no rain for 7 weeks. By August 1st the rye was so brown and dry, that I think I could have set fire to it. I have no irrigation. Same here in DC. I plant PRG every year now, eve...

It's hard to tell without seeing what the area looks like.

Re: Horrible cut on my Perennial rye, what's going on here? Please help.

Some brown blades down under is normal. Hard to tell in the pix, but what you have looks OK to me. Could be that you overseeded a bit, and the weaker plants are dying off. Should clear itself. You could go up to to 3.5" or 4" HOC to hide the lower browning. Good idea on the lab test. What PH did you...

What is the HOC?
Is this reel or rotary?
Blade definitely is shredding grass. Try re-sharpening.
On rotary, blade should sharp, but not be razor sharp. Not sure about reel -- never had one.

Re: Hundreds of "whirly" seed pods dropping on my new lawn seed bed from Maple trees. What to do?

Maple seedlings will die when they get mowed. I will not be mowing that low on this new bed until maybe November. Even in the backyard not all of them get sucked up into the mower What is your HOC? 4" would do it, and probably higher. If what you have is a "lawn" as opposed to a "savannah," I don't...

Re: Hundreds of "whirly" seed pods dropping on my new lawn seed bed from Maple trees. What to do?

Not sure about Tenacity, as I don't use it. On my lawn, they do germinate, but after they get tall enough for the mower to lop off the tops, they seem to go away. However, if you can blow some off with the blower without disturbing your seedbed, I would do so, as the squirrels in my neck of the wood...

Re: Best Tall Fescue to mix with Bewitched

Paul, Ken and Nancy in NH also have a type of Fescue mixed into their Bewitched in their most shady area. Go for it. Let us know how you like it. Firecracker SLS is pretty dark, too. Others like Regenerate and Rebounder (don't mix them up) and Fayette are also very dark, but I haven't used those pe...

Re: Are Fescues Really Best For Sandy Soils?

What was the source of winter kill? Can you be more specific? Was it snow mold, some other fungus, turf damage from wind and ice? Not sure after thinking about it a little bit more and waiting for things to wake up it appeared to be mostly in the areas that had heavier snow cover along the road fro...

This Utah State article maintains that it is KBG (poa pratensis).
Whether it's any good I have no idea.

Re: Elite Bluegrass’s Competitve advantage

Read the Purdue study again - they could find no KBG 2-3 years later. It isn't that it won't germinate, but it doesn't compete long-term. If I'm reading the correct Purdue study (Zac Reicher,2007), that's pretty definitive re KBG and PRG. I just planted a the Scott's TTTF90/HKBG10 in my rear yard. ...

there's only a couple, should I just pull them out? Or do they need to be painted carefully with glyphosate?
I would pull them out.

Re: Elite Bluegrass’s Competitve advantage

Ok so I get the point... its not going to work out the way a warm season grass will. But what about some truths. Kbg will spread and fill in so will this process not occur when other grass is present? What if someone diliigently put kbg plugs every 6 inches ? ( i know a lot of work ) What about the...

Re: Elite Bluegrass’s Competitve advantage

Is it fair to say that KBG will spread to fill in bare spots, but won't displace other grasses?
Will it displace dead grass?
I assume also that you can't plug KBG into an existing lawn (PRG, fescure, mystery grass) and expect it to eventually take over?

Re: Preparing for Fungus (I think it was summer patch)

For me a too high HOC in August invites fungus issues. I used to do that, but when the heat and humidity hits the 90's I found it very useful to be able to cut about a 1/2" off the HOC to dry the lawn out. Typically I let the lawn get to about 3-3.5" End of May until the the KBG seed stalks come ou...

Re: Preparing for Fungus (I think it was summer patch)

Perfect, makes sense. That lawn was renovated fall 2016, so 2018 it was under 2 years old at that time. As far as height of cut, that was at 3.75" - I got a ruler out and measured - I got a new mower about the same time and wanted to calibrate the HOC. What about the biological antifungals - like c...

Re: Preparing for Fungus (I think it was summer patch)

Would a test be viable now or would I need to wait for a reappearance? I'd rather not wait until it reappears. Would heat stress kill KBG, even when there is no lack of water (we got almost 60" of rain last year, and I supplemented when we didn't get 1" a week)? It was definitely dead. Heat stress ...

Re: Preparing for Fungus (I think it was summer patch)

Heat stress and summer patch look similar enough that I would want a soil test. Heritage is quite effective, but knocking it out fast isn’t proof enough. The fungicides are a losing game, even when they do work.

How sure are you that it was fungus? You don't want to use that stuff without a pretty good reason, as it will kill beneficial organisms as well.

Re: TTTF growth habit

Looks like K-31 to me. The veins look pretty prominent to me in some of the pictures. If mooch has truly narrowed this down to KY-31 or Annual Rye, it will be evident in the Summer which of the two it is; if it dies off, it's probably Annual Rye. If not, Tall Fescue. possibly, but as he hasn’t ment...
