Biofilm On Washington D.C. Monuments

Our D.C. monuments are being soiled by biofilms in the air. The National Park Service is testing ways to find the appropriate way to slow down the growth. The Lincoln Memorial is affected, along with other monuments in Washington D.C. https://www.nps.gov/nama/learn/news/jefferson-memorial-biofilm.ht...

What do You plant in Winter?

Just curious about what options other members have during fall and winter landscaping. I saw this link with suggestions about what to plant in the fall in the Houston area (zone 8): http://buchanansplants.com/houston-gardening-by-month/ Does anyone have the same options in other zones? What do some ...

Re: Hearing aids

Billybob, it's amazing that you should mention this about hearing aids. Just this morning I was at my ophthalmologist's office and saw a brochure about the revelance of hearing loss and it's association with dementia in senior citizens. Not saying that it might be reverent in your case, but it is de...

Re: Can Compost Teas be used this late in the season?

Congrats Georgia Dad! It,s encouraging to hear from other members who are satisfied with practicing some principles of the organic approach to lawn care. Just as you pointed out, and also ; Andy's reminders that there is no magic bullet, a Healthy Soil returns many rewards and quite a few less heada...

Re: Can Compost Teas be used this late in the season?

Thanks, Andy. I can see your point. Not all the microbes are going to want to eat grass litter. One of the concepts with which I've always struggled with is this : after a population explosion of one type of microbe over the others due to ample foods being supplied, what exactly happens? Do the micr...

Re: Can Compost Teas be used this late in the season?

What I meant by a waste of time is since I have no leaves to decay, would the microbes immediately move to the root zone where they may do some good? Here's a quote from Lowenfels' book "Teaming with Microbes" p.159 "There are certain times when it makes even more sense to apply a tea. For example, ...

Be sure to remind the wife that your lawn addiction is better than investing in acreage in Kansas so you can hunt deer. Not bringing home a trophy from a hunting trip can arouse suspicion quicker than spending too much money on the lawn. :rotfl:

Re: The New Canadian Geese?

Do the turkeys make as much poop as the geese? I'm a city-boy, always have been, but I have been to the various sewage treatment plants on trouble calls, when I was still working. The stupid geese pooped everywhere, it was gross. The geese thought the aeration ponds at a sewage treatment plant were ...

Would a soaker hose left on the lawn overnight help? Just an idea...
Check your water meter reading before you start and at daybreak to see how many gallons went down.
Just an idea, it might help....

Re: DHorn NC KBG Reno - Matthew Prep.

DHorn, you have a nice, and large enough property, that begs for a split rail fence at your drainage trench. It would set your property apart from the others as well as being a guide to your driveway in the dark. Just my .02¢... http://www.lowes.com/projects/lawn-and-garden/install-a-split-rail-fenc...

bass addict, be careful with the atrazine since you have Bermuda mixed in with the St. Augustine.Atrazine is supposedly not to be used on Bermuda unless it is dormant. cmgill, you've had a lot of views on your post, and no suggestions. The best I can do is to tell you that an organic solution to lawn pests and weeds would be (one or both of these), exotic or expensive. Here's a product that is labeled for grubs: https://www.bayeradvanced.com/~/media/BayerAdvanced/...

Re: How Many Guys Here Are Retired?

Thanks MQ . Since you are ex-military you have the services from financial advisors from USAA. In my case I (we), in the union building trades have independent financial advisors that are similar. My main gist is to understand if there is a way to keep a portion of my retirement nest egg from taxati...

How Many Guys Here Are Retired?

The reason I asked is: I have to make a decision on a split of my retirement annuity. The reason for doing so is to lessen the burden of taxation on the mandatory withdrawals. I'll soon be 69 years old In a couple of months. The mandatory withdrawals are based on a 4% withdrawal rate, which is subjec...
