UPDATE Pyrimisulfan for Yellow Nutsedge
I applied pyrimisulfan in mid-May. It seems to have killed almost all of the remaining yellow nutsedge. It took two to three weeks to see results. There are just a few plants left that I can spot spray with another product. It was expensive but it was effective. We’ve had a lot of windy days this sp...

Re: Generic Ortho WBG Chickweed, Clover, and Oxalis
Keep in mind that triclopyr formulations can be different depending on the product. Ortho CCO and Alligare Trioclopyr 3 are amine formulations while TZone SE and Alligare Trioclopyr 4 are ester formulations. Esters can be "hot" and can injure cool season turf in warm weather. Esters are also prone t...

Pyrimisulfan for Yellow Nutsedge
I have been rotating between halosulfuron, sulfentrazone, and mesotrione in a multiyear process to get yellow nutsedge under control. I started the regimen again this May when the nutsedge was visible but before it was really growing in earnest. Starting earlier this year seems to have made a big di...

Re: Did We Overpay for Our Core Aeration/Overseed??
Did your landscaper use magic mushrooms? Psychoactive compost is considerably more expensive than standard compost and that could explain the price difference. More seriously, anyone who does work like landscape construction is very busy these days. Labor and building materials like lumber are consi...

Boston Globe Article on PFAS in Bay State Fertilizer
There was an interesting article in the Boston Globe today about per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in Bay State fertilizer. The MWRA recently started monitoring PFAS levels in Bay State fertilizer in response to regulations in Maine. https://www.bostonglobe.com/metro/2019/12/01/levels-toxic...

Re: Milorganite now Illegal in Massachusetts?
The Milorganite Twitter account implied this week that they are having trouble keeping up with demand: "The growing popularity of Milorganite has made it scarce in many areas of the country. We are working hard to keep up with demand & get stores restocked. We apologize for any inconvenience & appre...

The weed in your pictures looks like hairy bittercress. 2,4-D, Mecoprop-p, and Dicamba should easily take care of it.

Re: Combination Fertilizers
How do we feel, in general, about combo products on this forum? Using individual products when applying herbicides or pesticides allows better control of the application rates. Combination products can generally lead to over application or under application of at least one of the active ingredients.

merrimack, which small farm supply store? Nashua Farmers Exchange Thanks! I don't think I've run across them before. I'll have to check to them out. We frequent Dodge Grain in Salem, NH, both for the lawn and the chickens. You are welcome. Nashua Farmer's Exchange is much smaller than Dodge Grain b...

Re: Advice on weed / insect control products.
I'm getting a bit overwhelmed with the products I should/need to get relating to my weed control. I'm up north. Last year I bought Quinkill Max for spot treatment of my crabgrass. After reading the triangle approach to the weeds, I bought a straight fertilizer this year and plan to get a weed contr...

Re: Alternatives to Sustane?
I get the Safe 'N Simple Lawn Food 6-2-4 at a small farm supply store near me in New Hampshire. Their recent flyer has price of $25 for a 50 pound bag. You can also get it at Blue Seal stores. I got a five pound bag of the Fertrell 3-2-3 from Fedco Seeds for about $8. The 50 pound bag is $45, but wo...

Re: Alternatives to Sustane?
Which version of Sustane do you typically use? I have used Fertrell Feed-n-Grow (3-2-3) in the vegetable garden and have been happy with the results. It may not be a good option if you a peanut sensitivity. Blue Seal Safe 'n Simple is another commercial product but it is expensive. Composted poultry...

Re: Lawn Mower trouble - please help
So, they're not something that you want to add to a fuel tank proactively, then? Fuel stabilizer is what you want to proactively add. To timingchainslipped's point, I wouldn't use Seafoam, or similar products, all the time. The cleaning products may help clean the carburetor a little, but removing ...

Re: Honda HRX 217 Suction issue
I have an HRX 217 and it is a nice machine and I'm very happy with it. It really does a great job if you follow a little less than the one third rule. I have noticed that you run into problems if the grass is wet or if I am lazy and take off more than a third at a time. I do think the mower has a sw...

Re: Lawn Mower trouble - please help
I think imauafan is on the right track. I would try to rule out the fuel or fuel system. How fresh is the gas you are using? If the gas has been sitting in the can for a while, get rid of it and get some fresh gas, preferably ethanol-free gas. Drain all the fuel from the tank, and refuel with fresh ...

Re: Dead or Dormant?
Don't fertilize with Nitrogen while it's dormant/hot out, because it'll force it to break dormancy as soon as it has enough water. And then it could get killed from the heat. So this means I shouldn't hit the brown areas with Milo, right? Should I also avoid mowing this area? The rest of the lawn i...
