Re: The #1 Lesson You Learned in 2016
You can really turn your yard around in the fall even if you were not able to keep it up during the spring and summer.

Re: Dumped my Urea this morning
A soil thermometer is great, but not everybody has one, and it's not necessary. You really can't go wrong with just mowing until there is no reason to and then dropping your winterizer.

General advice is no, but people have done it. Easiest thing to do is look at the previous discussions.

Re: What do You plant in Winter?
Here in NY, we plant snow mountains (this one is 9-10 ft tall). Then we spend the mid-winter days trying to figure out what we will do when the snow plows and snowblowers can't pile it any higher. This year will be extra-special as my winter client is in Buffalo, NY. Lake Effect storms are just pea...

You can do it with some practice, otherwise any local hardware or small engine shop will probably offer blade sharpening.

Re: Invisible fence for dog...
I ended up purchasing the system off of craigslist for a great deal and got most everything installed last weekend. I still have some wire to bury but the hard stuff is done. Even though it is used I appreciate some of the better features that the DogWatch system has over the retail systems. One thi...

Re: Fall Nitrogen Applications - A New Model
There must be more research that is guiding Dr. Soldat's recommendations that this one paper. For example he is quoted at saying that nitrogen uptake rates are 80%, 20% and 10% for September, October and November 15th respectively. This is in direct conflict with the rates given in his research pape...

Re: Fall Nitrogen Applications - A New Model
I'm not sure anybody knows exactly which studies that OSU is referring to. There is a paper which was referenced early on in the thread which details Nitrogen uptake dropping off after Sept. 15, but there is somewhat of a disconnect on the amounts and type of fertilizer used in that study and what O...

Re: Fall Nitrogen Applications - A New Model
Just remember that Sept 15th for Madison WI is only 2 weeks before their average first frost. If you plan on following their plan you need to adjust accordingly.

Re: Invisible fence for dog...
I'm looking to install an invisible fence for a Mini schnauzer that we recently acquired. Was wondering if the system you got JG is rechargeable or if you have to replace batteries periodically. Recently saw a dogwatch system on craigslist. I'm considering either that or a petsafe system.

Re: Grass Seed, Grubs, Dandelions, Oh My!
Dandelions are easily dealt with using 2-4D. I wouldn't worry about using a Pre-M, if you maintain good turf practices and using 2-4D in the spring you shouldn't have much problem with dandelions. Just wait until things are growing, so after a couple of mows, then spot spray.

I sometimes forget how different our seasons are. We already hit out average first frost and the weeds have pretty much stopped growing.

Re: Too soon for fall weed and feed?
I would think it's getting to late for weed and feed. Everything is starting to shut down, won't get much efficiency out of the weed part. The feed portion may be alright depending on if any of it is slow release. If you can give a more specific area of CT we can give slightly better advice. You rea...

"Hot Wings" Maple
The wife and I are considering put in a "Hot Wings" Tatarian Maple as an accent tree next year. We are looking for an understory tree with some character and I came down to the "Hot Wings" or a paper bark maple. Just wanted to see if anybody from ATY owns one or has experience with the tree and if t...

Trampoline Spot
So the area under the trampoline was great during the summer because it handled the heat the best. This fall however the grass under the trampoline is definitely lighter than the rest. Anybody else deal with this and have a creative solution other than moving the trampoline everyday?

Also note that it isn't approved for use in a lot of northern states. This includes NY, MN, and MI. Not sure how tightly they control online orders but you'll probably have a hard time getting it.
