Re: The downsides of closely mown turf
I would prefer to use chlorantraniliprole as well but use imidacloprid due to cost. $150 seems high for an imidacloprid app even on 1.4 acres. I use Imidapro 2SC. A gallon can be had at doyourownpestcontrol for just under $80 and the application rate is 1.25 - 1.6 pints/acre. An app on 38k cost me a...

Re: The downsides of closely mown turf
[quote=HoosierLawnGnome post_id=328160 time=1537797887 user_id=2761] So, the biggest issue is labor. It takes a certain amount of labor to maintain things the way you want, and if you can't get that - you're screwed. I have a soon-to-be teenager that I will train to mow. My wife is willing as well. ...

Re: The downsides of closely mown turf
HLG, sorry to hear about your struggles. Unfortunately the down side of a reel mower is it doesn't cut the longer grass as well. What are your plans going forward? Will you give low mowing another go next year, and if so what will your insecticide plan be? I feel like we have similar yard hurdles wh...

Re: Where to buy Urea Fertilizer in the Chicagoland area?
As VitoXI mentioned, try conservFS. The two closest locations to you are Dekalb(815)756-2739 and Tinley Park(708)532-4723. They both should have it at around $15 a bag. They should also have ammonium sulfate at the same price as well if you prefer.

Re: Sprayer Recommendations
It's one of my favorite pieces of equipment and use it alot. I did convert it to a 5 nozzle boom so it would cover 120" in one pass and added a pressure gauge, regulator and redirected excess off of the regulator back into the tank to help keep the spray agitated. I do use teejet tips. The ones that...

Re: Toro 3100D Sidewinder Triplex
Congrats on one amazing machine HLG! I look forward to seeing you cut with it throughout the year! @Riverpilot, you'd be amazed how low you can cut with the right equipment. You can go much lower with a reel mower with full front and rear rollers than you can with a rotary. I would be hard pressed t...

Re: Advice needed - bewitched
Sorry to hear about your struggles. The good news is it is KBG and once the weather turns, feed it and it will start recovering. JG and HLG gave great advice. I agree that 1" is more of a challenge, but you need to be able to do the basics well to succeed. Improper watering, fertilizing, and not cut...

Re: Class of 2017 Renovations: Roll Call !!!!
I'm in! 38k sq ft of bewitched. Looking to maintain it between 3/4"-1". Target kill date is June 24th and the seed down window is August 5th-13th. Irrigation just needs to be tweaked, some leveling needs to be done, and the only supply I don't have yet is the seed topdressing. I already have my babi...

Re: Best practices on changing blades
Those are some nice ramps Eric. :good: For me, I am able to remove the blades while the tractor is on the ground. The center blade is alittle tougher. I use a long handle 1/2" ratchet and a piece of 2x4 to block the blade. I only take the deck off to clean it.. although with those ramps you could cl...

Re: Golf Fairway Bluegrass
Look at the NTEP ratings for mean quality for "Schedule A", which is maintained between .4"-.6" http://ntep.org/reports/kb05/kb05_11-10f/kb05_11-10f.htm Several cultivars will do good at .5" height. Bewitched has my vote and it's growth habit means you wont have to mow it as often at that height. He...

Re: BrianJE's 2016 reno Bewitched day 35/28
Primo- good to be on, especially when mowing lower. It will reduce how often you need to cut. You mention the frequent soccer play and keeping the turf in top shape, but if you can keep the 2000lb mower off the turf longer from primo that will reduce wear as well. Lots of other benefits to primo as ...

Amazing!
I have been waiting for these pics! Looks like it made it thru the winter just fine! What plans do you have for the young turf this year in regards to Primo, FAS, preventative fungicides, and it's HOC?
