Re: Plant Now?

I think the problem with mulching leaves into the lawn is that the new grass has shallow roots and a rotary mower creates suction while cutting. That leads to the possibility that the new head can bww pulled up by the roots. I'm a big proponent of mulching leaves, but with grass that young, I'd pro...

Re: Plant Now?

I ended up throwing down seed for a second time in just a few thinner spots of my reno back on 10/14, the date of my original post for this thread. As it turned out, the first frost will not occur until tonight, 11/1. That means I got 18 days for those seedlings to "mature" and 47 days for the first...

Plant Now?

I have a small 4k reno going on in my back yard. I put seed (60% TTTF, 25% Rye, and 15% KBG) down on 9/15 and it has come in pretty good, but there are certainly some areas that are more bare than others. I'm thinking about throwing down some seed just in those spots. Thoughts? Average first frost i...

Reno Project and Tenacity

Just over 2 weeks ago I started a small (about 4K) reno of a portion of my backyard. I sprayed 2 apps of Tenacity to help kill an infestation of Bent Grass then manually thatched and then rented an over seeder to plant the seed back on September 15th.....a month before our average first frost. Not i...

Re: Seed has sprouted - best way to proceed?

1. If you are 21 days in, I would fertilize. I want strong roots going into the winter. 2. I would not use Tenacity, personally. I think Tenacity is great at seeding, but I think once germination occurs, it's suggested that it not be applied until the grass has been cut a few times. It has something...

Re: Fall new seeding - Starter Fertilizer and Tenacity

If I'm not mistaken, if Tenacity is preferred, it should be put down before germination. Once germination occurs, it shouldn't be applied until after the second cut.

Re: Bent Grass and Tenacity

If the bent is that extensive why not nuke it and reseed in a few weeks? If you didn't want to do that, I would mow it as low as you can in two weeks, rake or power rake, apply the second application of the Tenacity, then reseed. In two more weeks hit it with the third round of Tenacity. How much a...

Re: Bent Grass and Tenacity

I over sprayed the area at a rate of 4oz/acre 7 days ago. I know the recommended interval between applications is 10-14 days, but I'm really hoping to get some seed down prior to 9/15. This is a month before the average first frost. Will applying the 2nd and 3rd rounds of Tenacity at 7 day intervals...

Re: Bent Grass and Tenacity

Well, this time of year, your bent grass will likely be dormant. So that’s the primary problem. It’s difficult to keep it healthy in the best of conditions. But it’s doubtful that a good portion of your Bent grass isn’t in a dormant state. In that case, Tenacity won’t solve your problem. That's wha...

Re: Bent Grass and Tenacity

So, change of plans. The Bentgrass is way more pervasive than I thought. So, instead of just clearing the dead grass, reseeding, then applying Tenacity in the Fall and Spring, I think I would like to apply Tenacity now, then again in 10 days, and possibly 10 days after that. Finally, seed the first ...

Bent Grass and Tenacity

There are so many things wrong with my lawn, I really can't address all of them immediately. As a result, I'm starting with the Bent Grass. Why, because it's everywhere. I had a pro. over the house today. He works on my father's lawn, which is park like, so I trust him because I know what my father'...

Re: Spot Spraying with Tenacity....What's next?

So, how much is too much? I've sprayed twice, separated by 2 weeks. Some spots have definitely turned white, while others are white......just not as much. Should I spot spray again? If so, how long should I wait?

Spot Spraying with Tenacity....What's next?

So the long and short of it is I just spot sprayed a second application of Tenacity to what I think is both Poa-Anua and Triv around my yard. The first app. was 2 weeks ago and much (not all) of what I sprayed turned white. I just sprayed again at the same rate. 1. What should I expect after the 2nd...

Re: Reseeding lawn and pre soak grass seed

I'm curious about this technique. I've never even considered it before. However, there seems to be some merit to it, especially for larger lawns without sprinkling systems. Is the germination rate increased? I'd be especially curious about it when over seeding.

Re: Suspected poa triv not lighting up (white) from Tenacity

I spot sprayed Tenacity about a week ago. Some triv is absolutely turning white, but what I suspect is poa-a bc of the crazy number if seed heads doesn't seem to be effected, at least not yet. How long should I wait to spot spray again?

Re: Who all has put down Pre Emergent?

Putting Prodiamine down late this week because of the lack of rain in the forecast. My forsythias really started to bloom fully yesterday (maybe the day before) so it will be good. Air temps will be in the 70's and 80's, but soil temps don't react as quickly.

Re: New Grass in Shade with Acidic Soil

The combination of shade and competition for water and nutrients is pretty damned tough on grasses. You can try to lift the canopy some by having lower branches removed so more sun gets to the grass blades. Here's a general rule for figuring out where grass stands a chance - stand under the tree wh...

Re: New Grass in Shade with Acidic Soil

Smolie: I know "Green" recommended taking the advice with a grain of salt. I would advise that you take it with a pound or two of salt - the guy at VG repeated every hackneyed piece of poor info on the planet. Then any suggestions as to how to grow grass in this area? Because of the 3 trees I menti...

Re: New Grass in Shade with Acidic Soil

Thanks for the information. The soil is compacted, so he is right about that. I think I would rather do something else rather than a mechanical aeration though. Any suggestions?

Yes. A soil test definitely needs to be done. I don't know the pH in that specific area, but I'll find out soon.

New Grass in Shade with Acidic Soil

I had a pro at Valley Green today suggest that bc I have a Maple, Weeping Willow, and Pine tree all growing within a small area that the soil is probably so acidic it causes the grass I've planted over the last several years to die away after germination. He suggested a soil test and most likely a h...
