Re: Fall Nitrogen Regimens

Definitely the first green up in the neighborhood here. I just used Scott's fall fertilizer, which I realize is probably sub-optimal, but it's what I had and seems to have worked reasonably well.

Re: Where to buy Dimension and Urea Eastern Massachusetts

Jonathan Green makes 0-0-7 Dimension that is pretty widely distributed. I get it at Mahoneys, but I've seen it at other places that sell JG. I haven't found urea anywhere though.

Re: Fall Nitrogen Regimens

How do you guys water in the final app? Seems like it would be pretty reliably freezing by then and I hope to have my sprinklers winterized before that point.

Anyone ever try buying a few smallish pieces of sod for this purpose? One roll and cut it up?

Re: Milorganite now Illegal in Massachusetts?

I've seen signs about this at Home Depot, but they always have Milo and various starter fertilizers containing P. They really have no reliable way of knowing if you're seeding or doing something else.

Re: What animal chews grass to the ground?

We have tons of bunnies, but I've never seen them eat the grass like that. Plenty of other terrible things, but nothing like this. Guess we'll see if it grows back....

What animal chews grass to the ground?

Came home to find a section of grass that looks scalped down to the ground, but I have no idea why. I'm guessing an animal chewed it down to the ground, but other than a goat or some other farm animal, what might do that? Pretty sure there are no goats roaming our neighborhood! About a foot away, so...

Re: Perpetual cycle - winter damage->spring repair/can't use pre-M

Thanks for the suggestions and encouragement guys! There is some KBG, but it seems to be a relatively small percentage. I wish I had primarily KBG for this reason, but it's just not in the cards to do a reno right now. Maybe this year I'll see if the holes in the backyard fill in on their own. The p...

Perpetual cycle - winter damage->spring repair/can't use pre-M

Am I the only one that seems to be stuck in a perpetual cycle of winter damage requiring spring repair w/ reseeding, and therefore an inability to use pre-M? I get several types of damage: squirrels digging a million holes in the backyard thanks to all the acorns that fall back there matting down an...

Re: Thoughts on Ego versus Kobalt cordless mowers?

I really like my Ego 20", which is the older model. The 21" is supposed to be even better. Mine is not self propelled and that seems to be just fine on my smaller flat yard (0.2 acre lot). I can easily mow twice on a single charge of the 4Ah battery. I have additional batteries and one can complete ...

Re: Drawz Soil Test 2017

The gypsum I got from Amazon ended up being a powder, which surprised me. So I just spread it by hand. Lowe's now reliably carries Sta-Green Rapid Gypsum . And it's cheap. And it ships free with a mylowes account. Good to know! Very cheap! I paid that much for 5 lb at Amazon. How often should it be...

Re: Drawz Soil Test 2017

SOP went down this morning at approx 2lb/K as specified. Gypsum went down in the areas where snow gets piled up from snow plows & snow cats. I have to admit, I'm not crazy about the SOP from Kelp4Less - the granules were quite large and would jam the chute of my spreader in the open position. I'm no...

Re: 2nd Gen 16 Zone Rachio Controller

I like my Rain Machine in part for the local control right on the device. It's also not dependent on cloud servers (still works if there is a loss of internet connectivity, company goes out of business, cloud servers down, etc.). Rachio does seem to have a better app though.

Re: Drawz Soil Test 2017

I gave up and ordered 30lbs SOP from Kelp4Less for $45 after coupon. I have no idea when I'd be able to make it up to Valley Green and didn't want to delay any further. I plan to drop Milo today at approx 1.5x the bag rate (2 x 36lb / 3500 sq ft).

Re: Drawz Soil Test 2017

Struck out at Agway looking for SOP. Any other suggestions in eastern MA? Try Valley Green in Wilmington, MA, or Charleton, MA, depending on which way you travel from home base. TSP/SOP in Mass.? Sources for SOP 0-0-50? Located SOP in SE MA! Thanks for the tip! I've been meaning to checkout Valley ...

Re: Drawz Soil Test 2017

Ok thanks guys. The lawn isn't that big, so Milo isn't going to break the bank :) I wish Baystate were more widely distributed. Getting in and out of Quincy during business hours is a little tricky for me. I'll keep looking for SOP.

Did find urea as I did last fall, but still wondering about Milorganite vs urea. Seems like everything else posted here points to Milo being a better choice (except for winterization).

Re: Mulched leaves

My mower also claims to have a mulching blade from the factory and I'm not sure there are any replacement options besides the original (Ego 56V battery mower). I also have the Toro blower/vac and removed quite a bit of leaves in the fall because the ground clearly couldn't handle it. I'll try more p...

Re: Drawz Soil Test 2017

HLG - thanks for the analysis! I am pleasantly surprised with the results. I attribute the high OM to this being a 95 year old house with at least 95 years of leaves, grass clippings, rabbit poop, etc. Next time, I think I will sample the area over the filled-in pool separately since that soil is de...
