Re: 2023 Soil Test Interpretation Queue

Thanks Andy, are we OK to keep soil test results in this thread or will there be a new 2024 thread we'll use instead?

Re: Scotts hand held fertilizer spreader - too small opening

Oh geez, this is a tough one. Short of chopping the prills somehow (machete?), are you sure the opening is actually reaching the max? I've had two different hand held scotts spreaders, and sometimes the mechanism can get hung up and no open properly. I usually have to jiggle the trigger and manually...

Re: What heads works best?

To answer your question more directly, which I suppose was: Hunter MP Rotator Nozzles VS. Rainbird Rotor spray heads (42SA). You'll find that you probably need a combination of both types - large rotor spray heads and pop-up misting/multi-stream rotating nozzles. I LOVE rotor heads (regardless of br...

Re: What heads works best?

I've used both the Hunter MP Rotator and the Rainbird R-VAN nozzles. These are the spray nozzles that attach to a typical "pop-up" sprinkler head that usually have nozzles that spray a fine mist. These sprinkler heads generally have 1/2 Inch threaded connections on bottom. The "rotor" spray heads ge...

Re: Fall nitrogen and soil remediation

In my experience, late nitrogen seems to cause the tips of the grass to "frost burned" a bit more than usual. However, I think this is highly dependent on the weather. High winds, dry conditions, temps below 25°ish seem to be when it happens most for me. I believe that snow mold risk increases with ...

Re: PW405 - Summer 2023 Soil Test

Hope all is well - seems site traffic in general is way less than prior years. Are the soil test interpretations closed for the year? Or... hoping not... but did we lose any members over the last few years or similar?

Re: Biochar

Hmm... very interesting, thanks for sharing. Makes me wonder how biochar would affect different grass types? I've been applying the Anderson's Biochar and Humic DG this year & last. Can't say I've seen any specific benefits, but the last two years have been difficult to judge due to a tree removal &...

PW405 - Summer 2023 Soil Test

Greetings, ATY ST6! Thank in advance for the interpretation. Looking to continue my journey of soil correction to achieve highest quality lawn possible. Advanced methods are welcome. I've continued applying SOP at 2lbs/K every month during the growing season. I stopped applying Gypsum after 2021 gro...

Re: Ants

Yesterday, after dethatch & cleanup (as part of my overseed ritual), I also may have accidently put some Taurus SC in to a tank of water and possibly/accidently sprayed at 1.2 oz/1,000 to fight ants. Not sure if ants 'round these parts just don't respond to granules well, but I had treated with gran...

Re: First Overseed and Weed Advice

You certainly don't want to apply any pre-emergent products before the overseed. Like Turf Toes mentioned, Tenacity applications may work out if you stick with them. A post-emergent weed killer such as T-Zone could, IN THEORY, be used to kill some weeds. They claim you can treat 3 weeks before seedi...

Re: Companion Max Biofungicide questions (2022 update)

Thoughts on effectiveness of the product? I'm battling... something... this year, likely just the fact I'm trying to grow TTTF during a brutal summer. But I generally apply fungicide in late spring/summer, and need to rotate to a new product soon. Been using Scott's DiseaseEx for the last two summers.

Re: HELP PLEASE!!! Fescue trouble

My fescue really had a tough time over the winter. More yellowing/dormancy (death?) than I've seen in prior years. Unsure why, really. It was particularly dry this winter, and my overall routine varied little compared to previous years. Did you also have a much drier than normal winter in NC

Re: When To Plant Fescue in Alpharetta GA

I suppose the question is... what do you believe is the cause of the extreme soil compaction? Did you host a convention for steam rollers? Was the lawn a practice range for cannon ball fire? Point being - true soil compaction isn't easy to achieve in just a few months. If you tilled the entire lawn ...

Is My Favorite (Oak) Tree Dying?

My beloved Laurel Oak (I think, at least based on discussions here: https://aroundtheyard.com/forums2/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=24599) has been having the challenge of its life over the last ~18 months. A summary below: April 2020 - Tree sprouts leaves as expected. Looks great, I pruned some of the inner...

Re: Tree Identification Help - Oak Variety?

Random update that nobody asked for! This winter, we had temps down in to the -20°range. If not an all-time record cold, was close enough. Unfortunately, I lost many mature bushes & giant Crepe Myrtles. The Oak tree out front was very late to sprout leaves this spring, but it appears the tips of all...

Ooooh !!! So PW405 wants to go all fancy... The TEC at 7.74 is just short of the Loam category, and the OM is in the Poor category, just short of Mediocre. Adding whatever compost/mulched leaves/peat moss you can handle. In the cations, Calcium is somewhat low, Magnesium is on the high side and Pot...

Re: Who's vaccinated?

I was lucky enough to get the Moderna vaccine early. My significant other is a member of a Native American health system. Once they had given vaccines to all members, "household members" of the tribal citizens were offered the vaccine before I was eligible in my state. Even though I'm in my 30's and...
