Re: Milorganite vs Grains
Oddly, I used to live in the very belly of Texas cotton country, but I could not find cottonseed meal in the feed stores. My feed store stocks it here in Plano. They used to stock SBM until last year. Like Morpheous said it’s similar protein level to SBM. It’s just harder to apply since it does not...

Re: Milorganite vs Grains
The CSM the past two seasons has not flowed well through my spreader. In previous years, it was fine. The processing of it but have changed. I aim for SBM, but the availability has gotten spotty.

Re: Milorganite vs Grains
I have not done a soil test. I would hope the organic material has increased since I have lived here. I've doing similar applications for 11 years now. I have put down a fair amount of BLSC over the years. That really helped the soil absorption. I do have a ton of earth worms. I lost count when I re...

Re: Milorganite vs Grains
Thank you Morpheus. It looks like my current rate of application is a good feeding rate. I'll mix in some green sand since I think that is the only way to get iron in high-Ph level soils here. I like to drop some bedding pellets too. I usually drop cracked corn a few times a year too. It's a never e...

Re: Milorganite vs Grains
That should be fine--I went with 2 pounds of (organic) nitrogen per thousand this spring just because I haven't done it in a long while. It's not an issue, but the lawn is growing at an absolutely ridiculous rate of speed. Morpheus, how does of 2 pounds of nitrogen convert into grains? I put down 1...

Re: Milorganite vs Grains
Thank you Morpheus. I have two more bags of milorganite so I'll put one of them down this weekend. Literally right after I bought the milorganite, the SBM order came in. I may try to put down 2 bags of SBM and 1 bag of milorganite this weekend. That's a lot, but I've been able to two bags each of SB...

Milorganite vs Grains
I have been feeding my yard for going on 10 years for now with a heavy feedings of grains. My yard is looking very good. It took a while to recover from the 2021 freeze we had. I have been mostly feeding SBM. My local feed store stopped stocking it last year and went special order. This year the ord...

I would keep applying it all spring and summer. It can help improve the tilt of your soil.

Re: What so I do about my first-time frozen st Augustine lawn in Corpus Christi—
I have some green in Bandera (two nights of 8 degrees F and several days below freezing). The older Floratam took the biggest hit and is straw colored. The new Raleigh came through mostly green, but clearly not growing. I'm not worried. Will proceed like normal expecting it to awaken fully by the e...

Re: Starter fertilizer
It looks like I've applied 13 or 14 bags of SBM and CSM this year so far. That is around 185 lbs / K sq ft. My lawn got hit pretty hard with the freeze earlier in the year. I lost some St Augustine. The growth started really slow and has come roaring back. Fortunately I've only over applied once or ...

Re: Starter fertilizer
Yeah, soy's my heavy hitter and always has been. I'm...not within range of the lower end of application, let's just say. :-) I'm in Pennsylvania, and within walking distance of two soybean fields and can see corn fields from my home office window. Soy and corn are both rather cheap here. I had spro...

Re: Feed as fertilizer
Where is a good place to buy soybean meal? I have yet to find a pure product. I put down some pine pellets made for horse bedding just to feed the soil. Afterwards I found hardwood pellets for burning for roughly the same price $5-6 for 40lbs. Is there any advantage to using hardwood or pine over t...

Re: 4" rotors and tall fescue?
I switched almost of my popups from 3" to 6". I have St Augustine which should be cut high to be at its thickest. I had to use a lot of swing connectors since the pipe was not that deep. The install was not difficult, you just have to make the hole deeper to install the taller popup. The new popups ...

Re: Upper limit for organics in St. Augustine
DMT, I live in Dallas and have a St Augustine lawn. I would recommend you use grains and / or milorganite for feedings. You are feeding the herd which will cycle its way to nitrogen to your turf. I usually feed every 3 to 4 weeks, but you probably use less.

Re: How Long Between Synthetic fert and next organic applica
No more than 2 seconds. Seriously, you can apply organic matter (compost, peat moss, etc) at just about any amount you want so long as the turf keeps up with processing it. Be careful if you are putting down high-protein content matter like soybean meal. If you put down too much it will stink for s...

Re: Which Rain Bird Heads?
Don't mix sprayers and rotators in the same zone. You can use almost any nozzle with your sprinklers. Are you needing new nozzles? How does your grass look? I would check for coverage in each zone and how long it takes you to get an inch via the the tuna can test.
