Re: Plant Now?

I think the problem with mulching leaves into the lawn is that the new grass has shallow roots and a rotary mower creates suction while cutting. That leads to the possibility that the new head can bww pulled up by the roots. I'm a big proponent of mulching leaves, but with grass that young, I'd prob...

Re: Too Late for Sod?

I don't know how good the sod at home depot is, but in terms of timing, I've read that sod can go down as long as the soil isn't frozen.

Re: Plant Now?

That seems like it's cutting it pretty close. Rye would likely germinate in time. The fescue might germinate before then, but I don't know if it would be growing long enough to survive. The kbg would probably not get much if any germination. Depending on the size of the bare spots, the kbg in the mi...

Re: Any idea what type of mushroom/fungus this is?

When I read the first couple of sentences, I was getting ready to ask if there was any chance a tree had been in that area at some point and died. Then you answered my question. Tree roots are high carbon. They decompose through fungal activity. As you've already mentioned, most of the mass is below...

Re: Help Identifying this grass in lawn

It doesn't look like a prairie grass to me. None of the prairie grasses I've grown, anyway.

Nutsedge is relatively easy to identify. It's triangular near the ground.

Re: How to get rid of Hedge Bindweed

I think I read about this approach on this website once upon a time. I tried it once with good results. Take a mason jar or pickle jar or similar and fill it part way with Roundup. Then work loose the leading end of the vine (cut it at a convenient point if you need to). Stuff the vine leaves and s...

Re: How to get rid of Hedge Bindweed

I've dealt with field bindweed and was able to eradicate it, but it took years and nearly constant attention. Bindweed is a tough plant that is practically designed to survive almost any attempt to kill it. Small pieces of the bines or roots can grow into new plants. And there seeds stre viable for ...

Re: 2023: What Did You Do On Your Lawn Today (Cool Season)

Dropped elemental sulfur on the front/side lawns today at 3 lbs per 1k. Glad to have finally gotten some rain. I bought a $6 rain gauge so I actually know what's happening. About 0.7" over the last couple of days - nice and gentle. Cut some zucchini and squash from the garden too. Have you used sul...

Re: Canada wildfires

I think it's one of those things that you see on the news and think, "Wow. That's really something." It's really hard to fathom until you actually experience it. And those fires are many miles away. They're really something up close. There was one in my town that came within a couple od miles iid my...

Welcome to my world. We get wildfire smoke almost every summer. We get it from oor own fires, as well as fires from all up and down the west coast.

In Utah, the air looking, smelling, and trading line that is just known as August.

It's getting crazy expensive, especially when you consider the raw material it's made from... I've been doing Ace Hardware with a coupon and it is still $20-22 for 32lbs...may be time to go organic.
Isn't milorganite organic?

Re: 2023: What Did You Do On Your Lawn Today (Cool Season)

I broke down and bought a battery powered mower for those times when I let the grass get too long (like now) for the manual reel mower. The guy at home depot took care to point out that the one I was looking at was not propelled, so I'd have to push it myself. When I described my current mower, he w...

Re: Landscaper top dress too thick

Welcome. You should probably add your lawn size and experience to your profile. How thick is too thick? The answer to that can help us figure out what is likely to happen. You said you hired them to renovate the whole lawn. We usually use the term renovate to mean completely replace the existing law...

Re: Best Grass For Low pH Soil?

Anything you can get in a bag at the big box store won't be a hybrid and will be an older cultivar. They tend to feature poorer performance across the board...but also don't tend to be particularly choosy in terms of specific soils. Now that we know Bales is dealing with a sand for soil, we can als...

Yesterday, actually. I mowed the front lawn. Most of it didn't need to be mowed, but there were patches that did and since my mower is manual, I can't let any patches get too long.

"Hid" plastic eggs for the neighborhood easter egg hunt. It was probably in the 50s for the festivities, but most of the lawn was still snow covered. I put hid in quotation marks because I just spread them around in the spots that didn't have snow.

Re: New Grass in Shade with Acidic Soil

I'm not sure what the trees have to do with acidity, but getting a soil test from Logan labs and having it interpreted here is never a bad idea.

I don't think tree roots compact soil. Aeration is rarely necessary.
