Re: Idea for patching

I aim to confuse. :-) Strangely, my very basic watch figures out I'm walking when I mow. I don't know how. "Lawn Work" is roughly aerobic exercise for cardio, so I'd just use that. And you people have unmetered water? Lucky. Every drop that comes out here is metered. Our average bill is about $200 ...

Re: Idea for patching

Foe. Toes. Took me awhile. I finally read it out loud. I'm not going to bother with pics of my failed coffee pods. But I'll try to remember to take pics before I start and as I go along. The tough part of this is that I'll need to walk around with a hose, hand watering the plugs because the control...

Re: Deer Repellent

This thread reminds me that I need to mix up a batch of repels all to keep the voles from nesting. They still visit, but they don't stay. Repels alm ingredients include garlic, rotten eggs, and clove. Maybe a few other things. It smells bad when I'm applying it, but I don't notice it after that (but...

Re: Idea for patching

This will be my first experience with Buffalo grass. I've been using seeds until now and I never wanted to try a seeded variety of Buffalo grass. 140 plugs. That seems like a lot. My homemade project was going to be something like 18. I may have to put plugs in areas with live grass. But I may final...

Re: Idea for patching

I just ordered 140 plugs (70 blue grama, 70 buffalo grass).

When they arrive, I'll plant them together in bare spots, more or less evenly distributed..

I'll keep watering the coffee plugs. For a while, anyway.

Re: Idea for patching

I've been misting the seed several times a day to n keep them moist. So far, I've seen no signs of germination. From what I've read, I should have seen at least some germination by now. I think I'm going to order some blue grama and buffalo plugs. I haven't used buffalo to date because I've been see...

Thanks, bpgreen.

Is there an alternative to 2.4D (I've reached the max annual limit of 2 apps/yr)?
I think there are alternatives, but I mostly quit using chemicals to kill weeds in favor of hand pulling (or weed hound pulling). But that didn't work with speedwell.

Re: Yet Another Organic Fert question

I'm more than a little leery of any lawn service. I think I used one when I first bought my house and they made things worse. A neighbor uses a lawn service and they came the other day and sprayed some kind of weed and feed (I'm sure they sold it as tailored to their lawn). The temperatures were in ...

Re: Found this spider in my shed

I'm a fan of spiders.

In theory, anyway.

I had a wolf spider near my front door for a few months. I left it alone and it left me alone. It ate lots of bugs I didn't like.

Re: Weed, ID Please

I think the first one is speedwell. It's easy to kill with 2,4d as long as the daily high temperatures are below 80 (85? It should say on thes label).

Trying to control it by hand pulling is futile.

There may be another valve. I think my system had three (one outside and two inside).

Step one is in progress.

I ate all the eggs and now have 18 coffee pods with blue grama seed sitting in the carton.

Re: Yet Another Organic Fert question

I thought about trying the grounds route but the Starbucks nearest me didn't seem to know what I was talking. I'm also all for cheap but I can't spend 10 hours making trips back and forth for a few lbs of coffee grounds. I do think I'll look at the bedding pellets as well, they're almost as cheap a...

Re: 2021: What Did You Do On Your Lawn Today?

I sprayed some 2,4d on weeds and grass in cracks in the driveway. At least I think it was 2,4d. It might have been soluble iron. I didn't label the sprayer. If it kills the weeds and not the grass, it was 2,4d. If everything perks up and gets darker green, it was iron. If it kills the weeds, but no...

Re: Starting to lose a patch of 2020-planted grass

I laugh at their suggestion to use acidifying nitrogen sources to raise your ph. You could buy some hydrochloric acid at a pool supply site, get a bulb augur, drill holes in the lawn, and pour the hcl into the holes and it would only change things temporarily. I'm not saying I've tried that, but I d...

Re: Yet Another Organic Fert question

Another option is used coffee grounds. Starbucks gives them away for free (as with breweries, thiis saves them money). Some places will have buckets of "grounds for the garden" packaged up nicely in the bags the coffee came in originally. I used to ask if they had more behind the counter and told th...

Re: 2021: What Did You Do On Your Lawn Today?

I got the mower out, intending to start with the front, but there were a couple of ducks just chilling. So I started with the side, then the hellstrips.

By that time, the ducks decided to fly off, so I did the front.

I'll get the back tomorrow.

Re: 2021: What Did You Do On Your Lawn Today?

I was planning to mow, but we had rain off and on all day.

Since we're in either extreme or severe (I forget which, but whichever is the worst) drought, I'll take the rain.

Re: Starting to lose a patch of 2020-planted grass

We need more information. Have you done a Logan labs soil test and followed the recommendations of soil team six? How often do you water, for how long, and how much water does that supply? There's an old saying that the definition of insanity is repeating the same thing many times, hoping for differ...
