Rye/Bermuda/Fescue

So I typically lurk in the Cool season forum but gonna give my post a shot here... I have a roughly 60/40 (Fescue/Bermuda) lawn with no irrigation so I've been struggling getting the fescue to thrive over the years thus I've been letting things take its course so to speak. At this point I mow regula...

Re: Overseed rye in to Fescue/Bermuda lawn?

Hey, I tried to kill off the Bermuda when it was much less prominent and lost the battle each time. So I'm stuck with it. Plan would be to wait until fall and hit it hard with Rye and hope I get better germination in the Bermuda and bare spots with less watering. I'm really just trying to get the be...

Overseed rye in to Fescue/Bermuda lawn?

Hola, so I live just north of Charlotte. My lawn has deteriorated last couple years for a few reasons including, but not limited to, a lack of irrigation system and time. I have a neighbor who had a similar looking lawn to mine and then bam, this spring it looks uniform and dark green. I haven't spo...

Re: How 'bout it Transition zone?

Yep, there was some that I just watched in one area since last fall. Temp changes, etc. didn't touch it. No wonder some people like it as a lawn. Its impervious to nature!

Re: How 'bout it Transition zone?

The Poa Annua germinated last Fall. We're assuming that you know that Pre-M isn't going to help with that now. Barricade, Dimension, whatever. Liquids (WDG) tend to be cheaper, as you're not paying for the stuff to be a 50-lb bag (shipping costs). Once you switch to liquids, you generally wonder wh...

Re: I think its time to come over to the dar...err, warm side!

Thanks guys! @Dchall, St. Augustine is intriguing and I've gone so long with a sub par lawn that I have developed patience if the results will be positive long term. And starting small will help with watering since I don't have irrigation and am not home much during the week. I will start researchin...

I think its time to come over to the dar...err, warm side!

Hello, I'm going to stop fighting the losing battle with bermuda in my fescue lawn and finally start employing warm season practices. Right now about half my lawn is what I think is some kind of wild Bermuda because it has never been seeded in the 11 years I've lived there. Quite frankly it doesn't ...

Re: How 'bout it Transition zone?

I threw down on 9/22 but just some bare spots and a bigger area around my back patio that the dog nukes every year. Honestly, I may find myself in the warm season forum soon. I have no irrigation and my yard is at least 50% bermuda now so may start working that angle. Both my direct neighbors have m...

new seed drying

So I had planned to prep and seed today forgetting that I will be gone from 8am tomorrow until about noon on Sunday. Am I taking an undue risk by seeding today, then watering today and early tomorrow morning and not again until I get back Sunday? Or should I not push it, just prepare the seed bed, a...

Re: fungus?

I have something very similar but only in one large patch. I'm assuming fungus but it didn't seem to spread beyond that. There is some kind of white powder spread about the infected area. Looks like white mildew but that never did damage before. Regardless, my plan is to rake and overseed next month...

Re: How 'bout it Transition zone?

That is a great post and the million dollar question for us transition folks. When is the ideal time and what is the ideal rate to apply N for us? We are the children without a home. :)

I've adopted the same plan as above but have one more apps worth of Urea left so am hitting it this week. I actually should have done it before this big rain we have now but missed the op.

Re: 2016: What did you do to or on your lawn today?

Applied Tenacity at the 1 month point on a couple smaller bare areas I overseeded. The main issue I found with this is keeping my Dimension timing straight as part of the reason for doing this is to be able to hit the rest of the yard with pre-m earlier. So in another month I'll hit the overseeded a...

Re: Can sprout and pout be defined?

lol touche', but does the sprouted grass typically look different during that period? Or just stops growing up for a while? I've had new grass start looking rough and sometimes seem to die off but that could be because of lack of water and/or nitrogen. Wondering if there is a fine line there...

Re: Can sprout and pout be defined?

Little confused about the pout stage myself. What does pouting look like? Wilting/yellowing?

And I agree with height not being a good marker for anything. I have new TTTF sprouts almost 3 inches high already after little more than a week. It just shot up but of course is still thin and fragile.

Re: I'm beginning to think NC isn't fit for cool season gras

Amen to that here as well. I long lost the Bermuda battle but for some reason have been still fighting it with Fescue each fall (without irrigation). Its just not worth the time and money anymore. This year I'm just doing repair work on bare spots that I can hand water. Interesting points above abou...
