Re: Award KGB in the Transition zone
Could be. While I applied Milorganite at the bag rate on the holiday schedule they recommend (Memorial Day, and 4th of July), I did do an application at 1/2 bag rate in late April to green it up. Bear in mind that the lawn is probably 1/2 PRG, and could be even more, if the KBG didn't take as well....

Re: Award KGB in the Transition zone
Any idea why the roots got fried? This year's rainfall and temperature seem to have been about as conducive to healthy KBG as it gets in our climate. Not sure. It basically gave up the ghost starting around July 4th weekend. As far as the weather, I would tend to agree with you. However, I get stro...

Re: Award KGB in the Transition zone
What does he say about them? I didn't have much luck with them myself, but I was thinking of giving them another shot, since my regular KBG lawn got fried this year. I wanted to get some Spitfire this year instead of the SPF30, but even though his website says they sell it, he hasn't ordered any be...

Re: Alternatives to Sustane?
I'm in MD which almost entirely prohibits application of P in any form. There aren't many feed stores nearby so something like CGM which should be MD legal is maybe $1/pound and either a long drive or meaningful shipping $$$ away. A commercial developed organic fert from a company in the same delica...

Re: Alternatives to Sustane?
I finally found what I was looking for. Protene 8-0-4. I will be using it this year instead of Sustane. I actually like the analysis better than Sustane 5-2-4 and even 8-2-4 (more N, less P, and even less fast release N). I like the looks of Protene, so please share your experiences! What's the $$ ...

Re: lawngonewrong's 2017 soil test
Andy, thanks so much for interpretation and especially the boron recommendation. Fingers crossed I get the boron application right! Anyone ever do boron with granular SOP? I'm off the Vitamin M with my high P and think adding a bit of SOP is probably the most harmless carrier. BTW, the 7" was just t...

lawngonewrong's 2017 soil test
Hi all! I get that I'm late on the soil test train. I've got 8K sqft of largely TTTF, I originally seeded it with Newsom's TTTF/HBG 90/10. I've since overseeded, since it was patchy, this past Spring with Barenbrug's Turf Blue HGT (big thanks to member j4c11 for the suggestion!)--which appears to al...

Re: Advice on which TTTF seed to buy
Hogan may be a better source, but I'd consider contacting Newsom Seed. Their headquarters is in Fulton (HoCo), but they also have a location in Gaithersburg. They just might have some idea about the varieties that survive our humid summers.

Re: Anyone using Holganix/Sumagreen/Sumagrow or the like this year?
I'm giving it a go this year. I hoping to: a) see how far into the shady corners of my lawn I can get attractive turf before I break down and fill with pachysandra b) improve the biological and physical characteristics of my soil with better bacterial and fungal populations. From a purely chemical s...

Raked the lawn and dropped some KBG seed before the big storm.

Re: Who is applying PGR this year?
I'm giving generic Primo a go this year to increase density. I'd thought about applying to the existing TTTF before I get my spring (I know!) KBG overseed started. But I'm leaning towards just following the more common rules of not using it until at least the second mowing.

Re: Weird Weather, What to do about weed treatment?
I'm going to join in with other MD and VA people and doubt that you currently have crabgrass. IME, crabgrass doesn't really appear in our area until June/July. And after no later than December, it dies off and becomes this sickly-looking gray/beige stuff with a curled appearance. I wonder if your pe...

Re: What are your 2017 goals?
1. Up the stand's density, mostly with a KBG overseed at the beginning of the year
2. Kick the micro herd up a notch or three. My first year mowing my many leaves into the lawn has left a thick layer that I'd like to see breakdown

;) you're forgetting that I live near a ton of sod farms. There's fun stuff around! But seriously, Mazama looks promising for the OP, had he not made a choice already. May still be available near me. Many thanks! I just ordered some Barenbrug Turf Blue HGT (w/ Barvette) late last week, so I'm set f...

Re: Shade tolerant KBG cultivar(s) for spring overseed of TTTF in the extra-humid transition zone?
The talk of aggressive cultivars, including Barvette HGT and Emblem, makes me wonder if they aren't more forgiving of lower seeding rates. I understand that "aggressive" means that they, at least in Barvette's case, recover from damage more quickly and establish more quickly. But do they also produc...

Re: Shade tolerant KBG cultivar(s) for spring overseed of TTTF in the extra-humid transition zone?
... What are the percentages in the HGT bag? It's too bad Barvette isn't sold alone. It looks like a good option for transition zone KBG. On NTEP paper the other HGT cultivars look middle of the pack at best, although j4c11's results speak for themselves. Speaking of, I'll be watching how it works ...

Re: Shade tolerant KBG cultivar(s) for spring overseed of TTTF in the extra-humid transition zone?
I'm going to deviate a bit from the commonly recommended cultivars. I spent quite a bit of time this summer researching KBG cultivars for the transition zone. Summer Patch resistance is the main concern, but of course it has to look nice too. I settled on Barvette HGT(part of Turf Blue HGT) ... So ...

Re: Biofilm On Washington D.C. Monuments
This or something quite similar happens in a massive way around the production and warehousing of distilled spirits. Here's a report with pics from Jack Daniel's: http://www.businessinsider.com/black-trees-at-the-jack-daniel-distillery-2013-12 I noted that they point to ethanol vapor at JD's. Given ...

Re: Shade tolerant KBG cultivar(s) for spring overseed of TTTF in the extra-humid transition zone?
DO NOT SEED/OVERSEED IN THE SPRING. Your chances of success are thin to nil. You may get it to come in but it won't survive the summer. Wait until late summer/fall. Read up on PGR's. Thanks for the input on spring seeding: this is some of the stuff that worries me. I've been watching the sun throug...
