Re: Warm grass options in transition zone
I'm in the same boat (and geographic) area as kevreh, and have been considering Yukon, which is a top rated seeded bermuda. Supposed to be as dark as all but the best sod types, and is very cold tolerant. How long it will stay green is the question. Will a light frost be enough to turn it brown? If...

Re: Warm grass options in transition zone
You could call around to some golf courses in your area and ask them what kind of grasses they are using for their greens etc. But, that is not a good indicator of homeowner based bermudagrass since golf courses do daily maintenance (mowing, etc). Trust me, I was in the same boat with Bermuda, I wan...

Re: Warm grass options in transition zone
I'm having Latitude 36 Sod installed next year - I live just west of NoVA out near Interstate 81. The problem is my front facing windows are projecting a reflection on parts of my KGB yard, which is heating up the soil to 105F every day for 7 weeks, which is killing my midnight Monostand. After the ...

Re: How would you contain bermudagrass to your own property?
Zones mean very little to us. The USDA zones are helpful to select plants for winter hardiness. Most of the zones stretch across the US through all altitudes, climates, and soil types. Would you mind changing your location to the town where you live? If you live in Columbus, or another popular name...

Here is a before and after, side by side comparison of my lawn transformation this year. Left picture is spring 2017 after weed control, pulling dallisgrass, and killing Poa Annnua. How would you contain bermudagrass to your own property?
I visited a SOD farm recently and I looked at some of the hybrids (Patriot, Latitude 36, a few of the cold hardy Zoysia) and I was /very/ impressed with the color and density. They even had some sodded Riviera. It's honestly making me jealous that my KBG monostand is having a tough time keeping up w...

Bermuda Grass/Zoysia in the upper Transition Zone
Has anyone had experience with growing/maintaining Bermuda/Zoysia in the upper parts of the Transition Zone, say NoVA (Northern Virginia, Winchester area)? Or even people out in the Midwest in the same general area. If so - what's your thoughts on it? I planted some Yukon and Riviera in some pots an...

Re: Monkburger's Back Yard Reno
I'm going to try it out on a smaller area to see. I have to come up with a mechanism to plant the 'damp' seeds - I was thinking about using a small inverse pump. I will have to see if something is feasible for me to test this out.

Re: Monkburger's Back Yard Reno
Update - I've changed my selection to bewitched - It has better wear tolerance overall from what I've been reading, and it's vertical growth rate is reduced compared to Blueberry. Still going to try seed priming in a small area, though.

Re: Monkburger's Back Yard Reno
The good news is that with CRISPR technology, we should probably see some nice cool and warm season in the near future with altered traits (ie: switch on a gene that increases the production of GSH to keep antioxidant levels high during stress to prevent summer patch) The possibilities of the crisp...

Re: Monkburger's Back Yard Reno
I'm not going to plant until August. I have some topsoil stuff to do - Smooth out some depressed areas and remove some visible limestone deposits and other imperfections I see.
I meant to say I sprayed roundup on the entire property again to kill some straggling grass.

Re: Monkburger's Back Yard Reno
@May 28th - Second application of roundup applied. Yard is starting to die off - Since this was the largest area of my lawn, I don't have to spend that much time mowing it.

Re: sprayer recommendation
I don't believe Earthway sells/makes the S15 anymore - If you can, S25 - I have one, and it's pretty good. The S15 had some pump problems that were fixed in the S25. Once you calibrate it (driveway, etc) it's probably the best investment.

Re: Many days of cloudy and rainy weather....
Total Rainfall for the next 10 days - My area has already seen 3.5 inches of rain in the last 4 days. Attached image is from the 'euro' model (GFS is showing the same, ditto with NAM) https://s2.postimg.cc/p4peub88l/ecmwf_tprecip_ma_41.png TTB is reporting off and on rain from now until June 10th fo...

Re: HLG got a battery-powered reel mower
I've read that Reel Mowers require the grass to be wet before you cut - Is this true? (California Trimmer ones)
I've been thinking of getting one, but the ones I've looked at only cut an inch and a half.

Re: Monkburger's Back Yard Reno
I'm thinking about using a pump + 1 3/4 inch hose, similar to a hydroseeder, just without the additional material (mulch/fertilizer). Then cover it with peat moss and use a wetting agent so it still remains moist to see how it does. With a 25sqft area, I'll have to use around between 1/10 and 1/16th...

Monkburger's Back Yard Reno
My Back Yard is contaminated with Poa (Both) Crabgrass and other grassy weeds. It also contains numerous mixtures of Contractor-Grade Fescue Blends, Low Quality KBG cultivars, and more - It's more or less the standard application that came with all the homes in the development. Total area to be Reno...
