Re: Water Requirements
Glad I could help. Glad I could help to repeat advice I've received in this very forum. If you can post a close up picture of the dead grass we might be able to identify a fungal disease. Close means 3 inches away, preferably on a cloudy day or in the shade. Just to close the loop on this one, the ...

Re: Grains from TSC
Thanks! I did just grab one bag to give it a shot. How often can I spread Organics? I really want to try a few different products Keep in mind grains work really well, feeding a lot will result in a lot of growth (above and below the soil) which will equal more mowing, etc. I went nuts with Alfalfa...

Re: Water Requirements
Dchall...I have already pulled up the dead leaves and any root material that came with it, turned the soil a bit added compost from the bin and planted new seed. It doesn't seem to be spreading beyond the original area. I'll take pic of what it looks like now, may not help but maybe it will. If the ...

Re: Water Requirements
Dchall... Thanks for the watering tips. Considering the clay soil and aridity I will go for as long as I can without run-off with a 1 inch ceiling as frequent as necessary based on air temperature. Should be about 40 minutes based on my current system and pressure. Last summer I pulled up a section ...

bpgreen....again thank you for your wisdom and willingness to share. I'm quite certain the sidewalks will be destroyed by the Maples in our neighborhood. The entire development has two maples in front of each home, except where the original maples planted were Silver Maples and the homeowner removed...

Re: Water Requirements
bpgreen...thanks for the tips. I ran the irrigation system late last week to check on absorption and time to generate 1/2" of water. The weakest zone in the system took 25 minutes to generate 1/2", the others were in the 19-20 minute range. In all zones but the Hell Strip the turf absorbed the full ...

Re: Water Requirements
Sorry, I conflated two sources...the lawn maintenance article on this site said 1", the slow the flow site only listed irrigation increments of .5. 1 irrigation = .5, 2 irrigation = 1, 3 irrigation = 1.5, etc. Heavy clay...so heavy in fact that my daughter and I dig into the soil, pull out clay, mak...

Water Requirements
I live in Northern Utah which received very sporadic and infrequent rain in the summer. I've switched my lawn over to an organic feeding and weed prevention program with very pleasing results. The lawn came in twice as thick and green as it had in previous springs. We are now entering the irrigation...

Re: Urea for Late Fall Application
Do you have an Agway nearby? I buy everything there.if they don't have it they will gladly order. Some of the Site one places get a little pissy when asking for one bag. Or many the one by me is just run by D-bags Google search tells me no, we don't. I've never heard of them. Thanks for the suggest...

Re: Urea for Late Fall Application
I found it at my local Site One (Formerly John Deers Landscapes) shop. The one close to me is tucked back in an industrial area, selling mostly to pros - the sign out front actual says for professionals only, but they've always sold small quantities to me. I think it was $24 for 50lb. https://www.s...

Re: Urea for Late Fall Application
You need to re-read the very first posting in the Fall Nitrogen Regimens thread - here's the material there on brands, sources, etc says: You will not find fast-release Urea and/or AS fertilizers at big-box stores - don't waste your time trying. The best sources are farm-supply stores and places wh...

Re: Urea for Late Fall Application
Sorry for the delay in responding. I've been reading the forum on my phone and didn't notice that you're in Utah. I think I knew it at one point, but forgot. If you've mentioned where in Northern Utah you live, I've forgotten. Unlike many areas of the country, Ammonium Sulfate is generally readily ...

Re: Lat Summer and Fall Fertilizer Options
When I first started with organics I was using only corn meal. As it turns out corn meal is near the bottom of the list of grain (nitrogen) protein content. And I was using a paltry 10 pounds of that per 1,000 square feet. I applied corn meal on Washington's Birthday. I watched as the St Augustine ...

Urea for Late Fall Application
I've never used urea for a late fall fertilizer...couple of dumb questions: 1. Where do I get it? Recommended suppliers or brand names would be helpful and appreciated. 2. How do I apply it? A couple of web searches has me confused on what exactly and how. The Fall Nitrogen Regimen posted by andy109...

Re: New to Organics - Fertilizer Question
Update... The image attached to this post is one month after applying Milorganite. It has been a very hot and dry summer for us in Northern Utah (with the exception of one impressive thunderstorm). Comparing the picture attached in the first post in this thread the lawn is greener and a bit thicker ...

Re: Lat Summer and Fall Fertilizer Options
You can do as much organic as your budget allows. Go crazy. You ought to consider doing a quick release app once the grass stops growing and before the ground freezes at 1lb per 1k sq ft. Can you give me an example of a quick release application? Also, what is the purpose of this? Is it to allow fo...

Lat Summer and Fall Fertilizer Options
What schedule should I be following for organic fertilizers? I've decided on applying alfalfa (I can get it for a good price at a location near my house) as my primary fertilizer. Should I apply some in the late summer and another application in the fall (November) before the first heavy frost? Or s...

Re: New to Organics - Fertilizer Question
Dchall Thank you for the further clarification. I added milorganite to the lawn last week (because it was easy to pick up from the nursery on the way home). I will use a synthetic fertilizer for this fall. In spring next year I will switch over to alfalfa pellets (or something similar) and milorgani...

Re: New to Organics - Fertilizer Question
Organic fertilizers do not tie up nitrogen. They release nitrogen. Your soil will become healthier as the organic fertilizer goes to work. There are between 35,000 and 100,000 species of microbes in your soil. Only a few can decompose the raw food at the surface. Then others decompose the dead carc...
