Could be dog pee. Another option could be if you have a rider mower and stopped over that area and let it run for a bit. I’ve read that some mowers push down a lot of heat. Just a guess
Ah, that’s an idea! TY!

What are these dead spots?

Any idea what’s killing the grass here? The conditions in Long Island have been very wet, so the idea that this is a fungus is totally believable... but I don’t see any red threads, nor does it match my understanding of Brown Spot. It’s roughly in a line. Could it be animal urine? https://s22.postim...

Should I weedwhack seedheads?

I’ve got quite a few grasses going to seed in my lawn. I put down pre-emergent so they shouldn’t be able to take hold, but just in case, should I weedwhack them, or mow early/lower? I’m trying to keep the mower at 3.5” I don’t know if this is a particularly “bad” type of grass seed, I just know that...

Re: Organic fertilizer recommendations?

mabehr, you asked for recommendations on organic fertilizer, not "certified" organic fertilizers. Most here focus on the former, not the latter. Milorganic is organic, but it is not "certified" organic. Please see Re: Tips for a Organic Lawn . I realize you mentioned OMRI a few times in your OP, bu...

OMRI seems to indicate that urea is banned. This may have been recent.

Re: Organic fertilizer recommendations?

Isn’t milorganite sewage sludge, which the NOP is pretty clearly opposed to? Not saying it’s not good/effective (my neighbor swears by it) but can it really be called “organic?” Soybean meal is an interesting suggestion. OMRI approves it as per a decision tree... it might take some work to actually ...

Organic fertilizer recommendations?

Are there any recommendations for brand/types of organic fertilizer? I’ve been using Ringer Lawn Restore II for many years because at one point it was OMRI listed... but can’t find a mention of it on the OMRI website anymore. Ditto for Espoma, Jonathan Green, and most other major brands with which I...

Re: Equipment recommendatons?

You’re right, I got the model wrong: TimeMaster, not TimeCutter. They are MUCH more expensive, but also seem to be somewhat wider (30” vs 21/22”), among other differences. https://www.mowersdirect.com/Toro-21199-Lawn-Mower/p73260.html?gclid=Cj0KCQjwybvPBRDBARIsAA7T2kgYbqVn74Mf-MhWH6ZC58tcLTzFeo818FV...

How did it work for you? I've had issues with the smart watering program. It...just doesn't seem that smart.

Equipment recommendatons?

I'm actually surprised that there isn't a pinned post here, but is there a "standard" list of recommended equipment? Starting even just with what you should own (mower, strimmer, spreader, hedge trimmer, sprayers, etc), as well as specific brands/models. Please save me the trouble of going through t...

Covering seed

What's the best cover for seed, to make sure animals don't eat it & the wind doesn't blow it away? Lebanon offers a fertilizing mulch through the PennMulch or Greenview brands, there are biodegradable blankets, and of course soil/soil-compost... probably a few others as well. Has anyone done compari...

Re: What type of grass do I have?

I'm seeing a mix. Looks like some Tall Fescue, Bluegrass, and Ryegrass is present. The widest blades with no defined midrib (or sometimes you can see one, but it may be off-center...and the blade is never folded in half) are almost definitely the Tall Fescue. If it's dark green, it's probably not a...

Re: What type of grass do I have?

Welcome to the forum. There's a lot of great resources here so be sure to search around. As for grass i.d. I'm no help there but plenty on here are good at it. It's a little slower around here come spring and fall because of it being peak season for lawncare but it's still plenty active. As far as ...

Re: California Trimmer vs. Tru Cut

Maybe you have a different type of grass than I do, but don’t all of those cut too low? I had looked at CalTrimmer a while back and it looked like the max height was 1-7/8”. I have a Fiskars StaySharp which lets me go up to 4 inches but definitely gives a workout...

Robotic Mower?

Has anyone had any experience with any of the robotic mowers, like Robomow, Lawnbott, Landroid, or Automower? Most seem at first glance to cut too low, but the idea is attractive. My wife is dead set against firing the landscaper, even though at this point I’m convinced that he is hurting more than ...

Re: Ryegrass in Long Island? (Newbie)

I overseeded my bermuda with Rye (annual) last fall. I was very happy with the performance. I too had negative connotations of Rye... I'm not entirely sure why. I couldn't have been more wrong! It was a pleasant surprise. Especially if you're still new to lawn care, I vote to just enjoy the rye. Ha...

Re: Rachio Gen 2 and IFTTT or API Integration with Soil Sensors?

Where would you put a big probe like that? Wouldn’t there be a pretty big risk of damaging it with a lawn mower? Or if you put it to the side of your lawn, in an area you don’t mow, wouldn’t the readings be wrong? IF I had a probe like the one I shared, I'd remove it before mowing and replace it wh...

Re: Rachio Gen 2 and IFTTT or API Integration with Soil Sensors?

Is there even just a good handheld meter that I could walk around the yard with? Amazon has products from under $10 to over $150. Rachio does not yet let users manually enter moisture levels, but I could at least verify see how accurate it’s calculations are and potentially tweak the settings. I hav...
