Re: too late to apply fall preemergent?

Labor Day is the rule of thumb that I use for applying preemergent. Since you have already applied preemergent, you will have to monitor if your timing was on target or too late. Night time temperatures are a good indicator when the winter weeds will start to germinate. When the overnight temps dip ...

Re: Need help identifying grass

Looks like Bermudagrass to me. Zoysia is really not invasive.

Re: Warm grass options in transition zone

The best test to see if you are willing to go with bermudagrass is to tape a photo of dormant bermudagrass on your window from November until March and look at it everyday. Very few northerners are willing to accept five months of looking at a beige lawn. If you can do it, then check out this link. ...

Re: Raise HOC or try leveling

The dips and shallows are easy to remedy. It is the bumps and mounds of compacted earth that are difficult to remove. I've looked and looked for a harley rake rental in OKC to no avail. I tried a vertical mower which helps but I will need a second go at it sometime in the future. I might try a Manti...

Re: Advice needed on Bermuda Grass

Quinclorac as a post-emergent herbicide will be your best friend when trying to control crabgrass. It's slow to see the results but it works. Dithiopyr as a pre-emergent for crabgrass control is also recommended.

Re: Reel mowers used at Kauffman Stadium.

The more important issue is that the original AstroTurf has been replaced with natural grass. What is even more amazing is that Bermudagrass is being used during the heat of the summer where cold season grasses normally rule.

Re: Help identifying this weed

I had trouble with ryegrass in the past. I used metsulfuron methyl (Martin's TopShot) and it did a very good job of controlling it. Just be careful when using it around trees especially oaks.

Re: 2017: What did you do on your lawn today?

I decided to scalp my front yard since it is ridiculously warm today. I also decided to forgo any preemergent application due to a very mild and dry winter. I will also spread Yukon Bermudagrass seed in a test plot of common Bermudagrass to see if it will yield any results.

Re: What is this growing in my Bermuda Grass

It could be ryegrass. Was your lawn ever overseeded in the past? Look at the seedheads. Poa annua doesn't grow very tall compared to ryegrass.

Re: Fall time pre-m?

All I know is that I mistimed my application of fall preemergent. I waited too long and now I've noticed that my application of Dimension did not take effect. Now I've got to apply postemergent which equals lost time and money. Aargh!

Re: Best way to irrigate 100'x20' rectangle?

I purchased one of these specialty oscillating sprinklers that works well for long, narrow rectangular strips. This sprinkler has a flow-thru connector that allows for a daisy chain configuration.

I wonder if you can legally import one of these lawnmowers from the UK.

Re: I need a manual aerator, which is best?

I am pleased with the Yard Butler lawn coring aerator. Its all metal construction is reassuring since I am built like an offensive lineman and I don't need it to bend or break when using it.

Re: What type of Bermuda seed to sow?

Along with Yukon, I would suggest Riviera. Both varieties are cold hardy and resist winter kill. If you don't mind going with a blend, I would also suggest Jubilee which blends Riviera along with Transcontinental. Transcontinental is the best seeded variety for reduced sunlight locations.

Re: What you learned in 2015

Always check the fuel cutoff valve. Before changing the oil in my mower, I closed the fuel valve. After changing the oil, I forgot to open the fuel valve. The mower started to lose power, back fire and died. Instead of checking the valve, I purchased a new mower and gave my old mower to my father (w...

Re: Tifway 419 makes best NFL turf

The first six NFL fields are predictable due to their southern climates. The Kansas City Chiefs field, which ranks number 8, is the one that shocked and surprised me. To give up Astroturf in favor for Berumudagrass is a ballsy decision. It is rare to see Bermudagrass establishment above the 38th par...
