Later Summer Lawn Quality

Mid August through mid September is go time for some major lawn activities. But its also the time my lawn color / quality is almost the worst during the growing season. Theres fungal pressure. It's hot. I have poor KBG cultivars from my 6yr old builder-grade sod... I get brown blades peppered throug...

Re: 2023: What Did You Do On Your Lawn Today (Cool Season)

I cleaned out my "dry products" bin, mixed up some organics including Earth Works, Rich Lawn, alfalfa meal, and cracked corn. It equated to about 0.5lb nitrogen per M.

2023 spring green-up

It seems like my lawn has taken longer to green-up than my neighbors, but it finally popped and its looking good for April. I have pesky yellow foxtail trying to grow thru in places. I'm going to attempt hitting the whole lawn with some Quinclorac tomorrow. https://i.postimg.cc/62LxS4V5/20230424-192...

Foxtail selective herbicide?

I've got a small section of my lawn that keeps getting foxtail trying to grown in it. I keep mowing it so it never goes to a seedhead, but I know thats what it is.

I've tried killing it with Tenacity 2x and it still comes back. Is there anything else that'll kill foxtail in a KBG lawn?

Re: Who all has put down Pre Emergent?

I put down prodiamine last Friday 4/7/23. I got my irrigation RPZ valve rebuilt and installed last night and watered it in this morning.

It's been above 80°F a couple days this week and forecasted the same the rest of the week. The lawn could stand to get mowed.

Re: Robot Mowers on cool season turf

Thanks for sharing your experience and thanks for the photo! Your lawn looks amazing. It looks like Husqvarna and Toro are both coming out with bounday wire-less options this year. I guess I don't have an issue with a boundary as long as i can get one that doesn't interfere with my invisible dog fen...

Re: Robot Mowers on cool season turf

Thanks Morph. I like the idea of constantly mowing. I mow every 2-3 days spring, summer, and fall. I have an irrigation system so growth doesn't slow "that" much in July/August. I rotate my push mower 45° every mow as to not develop a pattern or ruts, but with mowing so frequently it still happens. ...

Morph has been using a robot mower for years. He’s going to be the guy to listen to on this subject
Hopefully he sees it and chimes in.

BTW - how do I get status to friend and PM people like we used to he able to do 10+ yrs ago?

Robot Mowers on cool season turf

It may seem this post belongs in the equipment section, but hear me out... I've always been a staunch gasoline powered mower guy. I ran the zero turn when I had an acre, mow the Super Recycler on my 1/3 acre. But I'm becoming more and more intrigued buy lawn bots. I already mow every 2-3 days and so...

Fall Frustrations

Hi All! As fall is getting into full swing, my lawn is doing some funky stuff and I'm really not liking what's going on. I could genuinely use some guidance here. I'm diligently working Morph & Andy's plan after my Spring 2021 soil test were analyzed. ( cliff notes: calcareous soil, ph=8.4) (See thr...

Re: Sprayer vs. Spreader?

With all due respect; I don't think the question is valid. It's like asking "hammer vs wrench"? I need both a spreader and a sprayer. My spreader is used for fertilizers (lots of organic varieties as well as some synthetic), grub control products, and sometimes fungal control (Bayer Advanced). My sp...

Time out - reset

I want to make sure I'm not crazy and looking for validation. Please put me in place if I'm out of line. I've been hanging out here on ATY/BL for 11+ years. I recently joined a cool season lawn group on FB. It seems like there's a huge push for people to aerate and overseed. Also, it seems like folk...

Re: Tough year for the lawn - Advice?

2. What could I have done differently to get better germination? I personally have had good luck with quicker germination of KBG if I spray the area with kelp-help after I put the seed down. Call me a [banned word], but I've seen sprouts in as little as 7 days doing this. (100% KBG seed) I can't sp...

Re: What The Hell Is This...

I've been fighting yellow fox tail. Tenacity didn't kill it in June (2 apps, 21 days apart). I'm going to try straight Quinclorac soon.

Re: honda hrr 216 cutting issues

This has been my battle for the last 4 years! I recently found a "better" way. I used to have a 1 acre lot with a commercial zero turn. We moved to a smaller lot and I purchased a Honda HRX217. It was horrible above 3" - especially this time of year. I was probably one of the people who wrote about ...

Rake / Dethatcher for walk behind mower?

The last few times I've mowed my 10M lawn, I've been thinking "boy, I wish I could put a 'comb' on the front of my mower to lift, straighten, and align the grass before it gets cut". I don't really want or need to "dethatch", per se, just comb. I did some searching on the Google machine and found a ...

Re: Difficulty cutting thick lawn

Huh. I’ve been using the battery-powered Super Recycler model for more than a year. I’ve not had trouble with that issue at all. But I realize that you’re probably using the gas-powered model. But I’ve been using the super recycler mowers for 20 years and they’ve always cut thick grass easily. Don'...

Re: Difficulty cutting thick lawn

I seemed to have fixed the problem with the Super Recycler not cutting well. Here's the solution; remove all the "Super" parts (accelerator and kickers), use the high-lift blade, side discharge, overlap by 1/3. 1/3 is better than 1/2. ....I have a theory as to why.
