Re: Urea Down...heavy rain...do it gain?
Okay, right 1 lb of N per K. Yes, that makes more sense. I'm dropping to 0.5 lbs per K this year...we'll see if I notice a difference in the spring.

I'd agree, embrace a little clover in the backyard. It's a kids area for playing. Leave it be.

Re: How Do You Rate The 2019 Season For Your Lawn?
Moving towards a lower input / more organic lawn and testing what can and can't be dropped without noticeable impact. It's been interesting. Mostly we get indoctrinated by the lawn industry or by our peers on what we "should" do. Didn't do a pre-emergent application in the spring and had only very m...

Re: Urea Down...heavy rain...do it gain?
No, 1.3 inches over 10 hours should be completely fine (assuming you didn't apply to frozen ground). The real issue is summer thunderstorms that dump an inch or more an hour. No need to reapply. Not to mention that it hard to imagine your yard even usefully taking up 2 lbs / K as a winterizer app. W...

Re: Out of curiosity, how many times did you mow this year?
Probably makes sense to specify whether or not you irrigate. I do not, well outside of dragging out the hoses a couple times in Sept. I came up with 29 mows this year give or take a couple. Which averages to about once a week. More specific, every 4-5 days in spring, but only about once every two we...

Re: Tru-Green Winterizing the Snowy Lawns?
It's just irresponsible. Will result in fertilizer runoff polluting local waterways. Same reason you don't want to be a week late on winterize app onto frozen ground.

Also my cherry was slow to root as well. Took about a year before it seemed properly anchored.

Re: Okame Cherry tree not taking root
I'd agree that you should use no less than 50/50 existing soil to amended, but at this point I wouldn't start over. Just stake it good so it doesn't blow around until the roots spread. Also really tamp down the soil around tree to help anchor it and remove air pockets.

I'm at about 3.75in on my NoMix in central Ohio. I start at 3in for first cut and work my way up to 4in by June.

Re: Post pics of your peonies
I counted about 40 buds on there ready to burst. We had rain last night and the whole works is about to fall over. My wife likes to cut a few of the blooms and bring them inside to enjoy. Might as well. I have a love/hate relationship with peonies...beautiful flowers, but plant proportions are off. ...

Re: 2019: What Did You Do On Your Lawn Today?
Mowed, planted Solomon’s seal, liatris, New England aster, Cardinal flowers, black eyed Susan’s, and trout lilies. Great choices in native flowers! I really like Cardinal flowers but tough finding a suitable area that is wet and sunny. Mowed last night and put my first input on the yard this year. ...

Re: Starter Feed and Pre-Emergent Concurrently?
Sorry to hear you were not allowed to fertilize at all for like ten years. That is not a good situation. How is the grass doing? Did it survive with no fertilizer all that time? Couldn't help but LOL at this. It wasn't all that long ago that residential lawn fertilization wasn't common practice. Gr...

I'd say either a Willow Oak or a Laurel Oak given your location and the leaves. I confuse the two.

Re: Do you consider Honey Locust to be "weed trees"?
My parents have a probably 60 year old Honey Locust in their front yard. It's also the hybrid thorn-less variety. I think it's a beautiful tree. It is messy in the fall when it drops the long flat seed pod things, but we always just buzzed them up with the lawn mower and by spring they had long deco...

Re: 2018: What did you do on your lawn today?
Well good thing I didn't try to put down winterizer yesterday. Rain "showers" turned into another inch of rain overnight on already saturated ground. Lots of puddles in the yard and a small stream running between neighbor's yard and mine. What a wet year!

Re: Where Are You With Fall Regimens?
This will be my first time putting down a proper winterizer app of urea. Based on the comments I see around here, seems there's a lot of consternation around getting the winterizer down at just the right time. How long is the actual window to get it down where top growth has stopped but roots still ...

Re: 2018: What did you do on your lawn today?
I mowed. Took just a whisker off, then I cleaned some leaves around the curbs. The sun was out and it felt great this afternoon. Good to see another person in the Columbus, Ohio area. I mulched leaves in the front yard today. Growth has either stopped or nearly so here. I almost dropped the winteri...

Re: Anyone ever used "Winterizer" app as the only app?
My dad does one fertilizer app in the fall and that's it. Well and does a Grub-x treatment about every other year in June which provide some addl N. And his lawn looks pretty dang good provided we get sufficient rain (he does not irrigate). It's an established 50 year old KBG lawn. He doesn't bag gr...

Thanks for the response, Andy. I'm looking forward to the results of trying a new approach. Beautiful landscaping and tree lined property. Oh, and nice grass too.
