Re: 2023: What Did You Do On Your Lawn Today (Cool Season)

I haven't mowed in six weeks. I think we've had 1/4 inch of rain. It's interesting, the grass hasn't grown, but it has shot up seed heads. It looks really bad, but this is how I'm riding this thing out. My neighbors are shaving theirs, some are really burning up. I planted clover in mine last week f...

Re: What's happening where you live?

It was a high of 19F yesterday with 30mph winds. No sign of lawns greening up. Some daffodil and galanthus are trying to get something going. Northern Illinois.

What's happening where you live?

Northern Illinois. Very little snow this season, I think I shoveled once. We've had lots of rain and cloudy gloomy days 30's and 40's.

Re: Hoosier state, anyone put Urea down yet?

I'm in Northern Illinois and it is very dry here, although tonight and tomorrow were supposed to get 1-2 inches. If you haven't had any rain since August your grass is probably in a dormant mode. I think if you applied your urea now it wouldn't be utilized. There isn't any hurry. You are way early. ...

Re: NH Overseed Advice

I would concur, no more N until the final drop. Perhaps go with a half rate at that time. Then maybe some light milorganite drops as needed in spring. Then a normal app about May 15th and you'll be back on schedule.

Yesterday, I put down my last regular season urea. Just before we got 1/4 inch of rain hopefully enough to wash it in.

Re: I think I messed up

If the Zoysia is truly dead you can use an aerator to punch holes through the thatch. Then you can overseed and get decent germination. If the Zoysia isn't dead you can spread it all over your yard and have a worse mess.

Re: Aeration & Over Seeding

Hi BobF. If you use the search engine regarding over-seeding and aeration, you will discover that this site discourages both practices (for the most part). Also you will discover the reasons why , or why not and better alternatives you might want to look at. This is good news because they can be exp...

Re: Milo on dormant lawn

I mow my grass at 3.5, follow the recommendations from this site. Follow the high input fall protocol, my yard never went dormant. It looks like second week of May. Until yesterday I had only applied one shot of May Milorganite as fertilizer in all of 2022, I always mulch mow. My neighbors yards are...

I have no experience with certainty. With tenacity it doesn't take a lot. Just be sure you hit your area once. There is no need to hit it twice.
