Re: Starting to think my lawn doesn't like iron
I have had good luck with feature 6-0-0 at 2oz/k and it is chelated iron and will not stain concrete. It does not last very long, maybe 3 weeks at the most.

Re: Help identifying small brown spot in my yard ;)
If it gets any worse I'm not far behind you. I don't know or if anybody knows if eating a infected deer with CWD will harm you or not. Living in Iowa we have been lucky and have had very few deer that have CWD. They test for it every year but your still running a risk although i think it is small. ...

Still green and watering twice a week now with the temps in the nineties. There has been no rain now for 3 weeks and not much in sight, first summer for this grass so trying to keep it out of dormancy.

Re: Gryd’s 2019 Mini Renovation
I don't think that you can determine the final shade-tolerance of cultivars until 2-3 years after establishment. I spoke with the Head Scientist of one of the major seed research companies a few years ago, and she said that the industry-standard was "at least two full seasons". Early signs of poten...

Re: Gryd’s 2019 Mini Renovation
I did a reno of midnight, bewitched and mazama last fall and they blend real well in shade with about 2 hours of sun. I was surprised that it did so well as i was thinking of putting in a flower bed if it didn't work. I’m surprised Midnight did okay in the shade. I guess I should have purchased les...

Re: Gryd’s 2019 Mini Renovation
Thanks Andy. Does the above also apply to Creeping Red Fescue as well? Personally, I hate the fine fescues (does not include Hard Fescues in my book) and they look to my eyes like wispy dying grasses. The color looks wrong to me, and the thin blades, laydown tendencies and patchiness of it make me ...

Re: Hundreds of "whirly" seed pods dropping on my new lawn seed bed from Maple trees. What to do?
I'm trying hard to think of where you'd have to live in the US to not be familiar with maple samaras, a.k.a. whirlibirds, whirligigs, helicopters, etc. Maples are everywhere. The genus Acer is huge. And all maples produce them. Growing up outside of Chicago, we called them whirlibirds. Maples don't...

Re: Is any particular type of grass darker than the rest (all else being equal)?
Mazama is a very dark cultivar. I have a mix of mazama, midnight and bewitched and they go together well, you can't see any difference in them. Bewitched started out a little lighter than the other two but by this spring it has caught up to them. I did a reno last fall.

Re: How many pounds of Midnight do you guys recommend per 1000sq ft?
I will stick a thermometer down there to see. The top 2inches are over 60deg for sure. Especially since this area is getting 12hrs of sun. john5246: If you go to greencast.com it will show you all the temps and averages but if your in a lot of sun that will help. I use it a lot to keep track of whe...

Re: How many pounds of Midnight do you guys recommend per 1000sq ft?
Dont panic if it isn't up in 7 days as the soil is still cool. Right now your soil temp is 52.6 for the 24 hour average. Hopefully you will get some warmer temps in the next few weeks. Your going to love the color of the midnight and bewitched, the bewitched my be a little lighter than the midnight ...

I used 2 1/2 lbs. last fall with no irrigation and it turned out to be just right. Buy a little extra in case of washouts or spots that didn't fill in.

Re: Planning For Fall Reno
Many members now/recently did a "diagnostic dose" of Tenaciity (0.5 teaspoons/gallon) to "light up" susceptible weeds, Poa Annua and Poa Triv. It will not kill Poa Triv, but will (by turning white) show where it is. The whole lawn may show some whitening for a couple of weeks. Tenacity can be appli...

I did a reno of bewitched, mazama and midnight last fall and they mix very well. The bewitched was a shade lighter but by this spring it has caught up to the other two. You can cover 3 different classes this way also. There is a new cultivar out called bluebank that is suppose to be even better than ...
