Is a fungus among us?
Hi all, hoping to identify if I indeed have a fungus issue and how to attack it. Background: this is my back yard, not my newly renovated front yard. It is a tall fescue mix, probably 15 years old. 2.8k sqft without irrigation system. Applications this fall: 10lb/k of 10-10-10 on October 1, 24d and ...

Re: Scott’s Fall 2020 Renovation
Update at about 40 days post seed down, 35 post germination. Everything is moving along great. I’m at 2.5” height of cut. A few weeds (broadleaf and wild onion) I’ll deal with in the spring. Perhaps touch up an area or two in spring or fall, we will see how it does. Next fertilizer application will ...

Re: Scott’s Fall 2020 Renovation
The moment I’ve been waiting for...baby’s first haircut. Day 16, brought it from 3 inches at the longest spots down to 2 inches to promote filling in. I’ve stopped any night watering to prevent fungus, but I still have to keep frequency up since I added seed in a couple of areas that didn’t germinat...

Re: Scott’s Fall 2020 Renovation
Day 12. Color is starting to darken. The pictures don’t do a great job of depicting the color, but it is very nice. I’m officially at that stage of a renovation where you’re happy but begin to worry if it’ll all come together. The pictures include a few less than stellar areas. Longest patches are 2...

Re: Stack316 half backyard renovation 2020
Nice progress! It’s going to be great from what I can see. The difference between day 11 and 18 after a mow is amazing. I’m on day 11 right now and hoping for the same progress and figuring I’ll do my first mow around the same time.

Re: Scott’s Fall 2020 Renovation
Thanks! Seems like you’re moving along, too. It’ll be interesting to compare notes. I threw down some extra on the areas I was confident had an issue. Hard to tell from pictures but on the right side, the slope is significant and that’s also where I had issues with my sprinklers. That was Saturday s...

Re: Scott’s Fall 2020 Renovation
Great germination at 4.5 days. I saw a couple after 2.5, then they started poking through yesterday before exploding over night. Some areas better than others unsurprisingly, but off to a good start.

Re: Scott’s Fall 2020 Renovation
Seed went down on Saturday, September 5th. Sprinkler setup is working great. Unfortunately the forecast is upper 80s for the next 4 days and almost no rain for 2 weeks. That’s how it seems to go. But I’ve got 4 zones each going 4 times per day for 10 minutes to keep it wet throughout and will adjust...

Re: Scott’s Fall 2020 Renovation
I think you guys both make good points. Ideally, I would’ve had the soil in here a week ago, but it just didn’t work out. I should mention it’s not much leveling, just a few areas around the driveway. I sprayed glypho tonight on anything not worth pulling. I’m going to hope the mesotrione I apply ke...

Scott’s Fall 2020 Renovation
I moved into a new house about a year ago. I had my struggles at the last place, but I was eventually able to turn that lawn into a really solid one. The new house’s lawn was a disaster, however. The front had barely any grass left, a combination of just dirt and every weed imaginable. The back had ...

Thanks again. Sulfur will go down very soon. Any need to touch the micros or not worth it at this point?

Re: Scott's 2019 Soil Test
Thanks Hoosier. I can’t for the life of me figure out why my sandy soil has patches that are so shiny, flat, and let water sit on them. I started using BLSC and kelp help at the end of last fall. Perhaps those will help. One thing I did not mention: I did do a solid winterizer app of urea (I still h...

Re: Scott's 2019 Soil Test
I also want to add that I do have issues with water not draining well. My guess is that the low OM has caused my dearth of earthworms, which has caused my compaction. But if the test reveals anything on this topic, I’m interested to know.

Scott's 2019 Soil Test
Lawn size: 1000 sqft Area: Northern Kentucky very near the Ohio River Generally shady due to adjacent buildings Currently have tall fescue. In Fall 2017, I brought in about an inch of topsoil to the back and tried seeding. It grew well at first, but did not come in as thick as desired and was patchy...

Re: Feeling doomed and trying to plan
I should also mention that the grass that I do have is quite healthy looking. It’s a matter of filling in some bare spots out front and figuring out the issue in the back.

Re: Feeling doomed and trying to plan
Thanks, Dave. That's generally how I feel; if I'm nailing the basics I should be on the right path. It's just disappointing to put so much effort and money into things and not have it turn out well. It amazes me that the 50%-ish of my backyard that is bare dirt did not germinate. And based on 1) not...
