Re: Dormant Seeding with No Snow in Sight

Pre-Germination aside, based on the replies in this thread sofar, I guess you guys are saying winter/snow is not beneficial in the winter dormant overseed regimine? I was under the impression that the -snow- was a big factor, as it weighed the seed down, - also frost soil heave, basically put the se...

Re: Dormant Seeding with No Snow in Sight

Snow aside, I thought the benefit of doing it (if it will get cold enough) is frost freeze cycles of the soil and it helping/aiding to pull the seed into - potentially better S2S contact. Sure, some weight of the snow helps as well, but even doing it now (before march) assuming we get a week or 2 se...

Dormant Seeding with No Snow in Sight

I like to dormant overseed right before a snow forecast. Aim for a day where there is no winds as well.....siting has a incline on it. Just another -climate change- winter sofar. Haven't had a hard freeze. Should I be patient and hopefully some snow may come Don't even see soil reaching freeze-thaw ...

Re: Folks with Fescue - do you overseed even if grass survives Summer?

Speaking of Aeration.......which I know ATY frowns upon, who -aerates- their shrubs. Last night, I was looking at some garden tools, and they had a -aeration fork-. Basically which looks like a 2 pronged solid 1" or so tool, about 18 deep, etc. The verbiage of the tool uses was to - aerate the soil ...

Re: Adding OM - How much peat moss can the lawn take? (planning for 2021)

Mods. LMK if should make a new thread but on the topic of how things (move) within the earth, how much or how little between the worms and such does -soil- move from one area to another... I once planted some large shrubs from 15G containers. I root washed it as much as possible but have often wonde...

Re: Adding OM - How much peat moss can the lawn take? (planning for 2021)

For own wiki, when peat -breaks down-, are we saying it does get -incorporated- into the soil. I was think it would just be a different -layer----so for example, if you had sandy soil, the native soil would be sand, and then ontop would be a -wet- peat layer, not encouraging deeper roots, since the ...

Re: Adding OM - How much peat moss can the lawn take? (planning for 2021)

For potting mix, I tend to err on bark based/coarse vermiculate and some peat (depends on what goes in the container/pot). Never was a fan of peat anywhere else except as a topper to seed. Just did not picture it as a soil amender even though the masses do, cause IMO, the topsoil can be wet or dry a...

Re: Adding OM - How much peat moss can the lawn take? (planning for 2021)

Is peat a good idea as a topper. I mess will it change the top soil profile (too wet if rained heavily) and then right below, if not water retentive, will it make the roots not want to see water down ? As well. with too much -peat- , won't it make the top surface too airy . I can see it being used t...
