Soil Savy Test and Improvment

I recently did my first ever soil test through soil savy. I received the results and it said I am in the ideal range for my PH at 6.37 and also am on the lower end of the ideal range for nitrogen but I am very low in Phosphorus and Potassium. What can I do to add Phos and Potassium in my lawn? Manur...

Re: Best seed cover (other than peat)

I have always had the best luck seeding with straw. Every time I put peat down the seed gets washed away. My neighbor told me he used a tiny bit of annual rye just to hurry up and sprout to keep the other stuff from washing away since it germinates in like 4 days.

Spray Tenacity.

The granular will hurt it but use the liquid and spray it and after 2-3 apps it should get rid of it.
Will do. I bought some tenacity, surfactant, and coloring all ready to go. I’m going to spot spray the bent grass in my front lawn as well and hopefully I can knock it out.

Sun and Shade seed ratio?

Have you ever looked at the actual percentages in sun and shade mixes? They usually consist of Bluegrass/Fine Fescue/Rye but if you see the percentage of Kentucky bluegrass it is very low. Usually only around 3-6% of the bag (6-12% of the seed) is actually bluegrass. The majority is perennial rye, a...

Re: How bad do new TTTF cultivars look in a KBG/RG/FF lawn?

Why would you recommend dethatching if the OP never said that he had thatch? I don't get it. And core aeration is like to add more problems (digging up weed seeds that will germinate). If you are going to add a grass type to a lawn the best way to do it is by over seeding. It’s best to do your over...

Re: How bad do new TTTF cultivars look in a KBG/RG/FF lawn?

I would not use by itself to patch simply because the texture and color will stand out and won’t blend in. If you do patch I would mix it in with a sun and shade that way it blends better. I was mowing my parents lawn last week and they used turf type to patch some areas around their driveway a coup...

Partial Renovation Elimination of Bentgras

I moved into my home last summer and noticed the backyard was completely different colors of green. So I am doing a partial renovation on my backyard. I am doing this because I have a terrible problem with creeping bentgrass. It has completely taken over in large areas and continues to spread and ch...

Re: New Home with a discolored lawn.

I'm with Andy. I'd like to see some closer pictures and/or a diagnostic dose of Tenacity to confirm or rule out bentgrass. Does it lift at the edges like a toupee? https://i.postimg.cc/MM9HF2vj/86-CA72-E4-F57-A-4416-9230-A4-E342-BD6-D3-E.jpg I am pretty sure the problem is a ton of creeping bent gr...

New Home with a discolored lawn.

Last June I moved into my new house and started working on the lawn in northeastern Ohio. In the front lawn there is some sections where I have a nice deep dark green areas, but in the middle I have what I believe is a blend of old ryegrass that is a lighter green color and doesn’t match. Last year ...

Re: Viability of PRG in Southeast PA

Trying to establish new KBG into a predominantly PR lawn has a long history of failure, due to alellopathy. Did you do a Fall winterization fertilization last year? That can have a significant effect on the earliness of green-up. Yes I did. Which is another reason why I couldn’t understand why it t...

Home Depot Sod

I stopped over at Home Depot over the weekend and saw they had a couple pallets of bluegrass sod. The sod they had looked very poorly and either looked dried out or yellowed like it had a fungus. Either way a sales rep said he would sell me some of these squares of sod for $1 a peice since they look...

Yeah I think 4” is perfect if your goal is to grow deeper roots and crowd out the weeds.

Re: Horrible cut on my Perennial rye, what's going on here? Please help.

Just curious, what brand and cultivar of perennial rye grass seed did you use for last falls lawn renovation?

I would consider resharpening your blade or maybe buying a new one if you feel it’s shredding the grass.

Re: Height of Cut (HOC) Best Practice

It all depends on the type of grass and the time of year. This is how I do mine.

In the Spring

Kentucky Blue 3.25-3.5”
Tall Fescue 3.25-3.5”
Perennial Rye 2.25-2.75
Bluegrass/Rye 3”

In the Summer

Kentucky Blue 3.75-4”
Tall Fescue 3.75-4”
Perennial Rye 3”-3.25”
Bluegrass Rye 3.25-3.5”

Re: Viability of PRG in Southeast PA

I’m in Ohio just an hour northwest of Pittsburgh, Pa. This year I had a terrible time getting my perennial rye out of winter dormancy. It took forever and I felt my lawn was behind some of the Kentucky bluegrass lawns. Now the perennial rye in my lawn was some older outdated cultivars from the previ...
