I love checking on the credentials of these authors too… beyond location, they often have degrees in journalism and no education or experience in the topic they are writing about.

Re: Edslawn soil test

Thanks Morpheus! In 2020, the back had the topsoil scraped off, then it was leveled with a lot of fill and the topsoil was restored, and then sod was placed. This all happened after the last soil test, so I appreciate you looking at both. The front really looks great after 5+ years of OM and the pre...

Edslawn soil test

My lawn is about 10,000 sq ft in the front and 3,000 sq ft in the back. The back is a fenced-in area where my three dogs prowl, but have been mostly trained to use a wood chip perimeter. I have big 60-80' trees (oak, hickory, maple, etc) in the rear and one side of the property and mature landscapin...

Re: How Many Times Did You Mow?

I don't count, but this past year was twice a week April, May and June. July through Oct was once per week. That's about 40 times if my math is right. Add leaf mulching and it is another 8-10 times.

Re: 2023: What Did You Do On Your Lawn Today (Cool Season)

Mulching many, many leaves today and last few weeks... I've learned that you have to keep up with it or you're toast with the big trees that I have. It's become almost therapeutic for me. Also, seems like a fairly typical year for pace and quantity. Getting ready for full stop for final nitrogen dro...

Re: Japanese Stiltgrass: Keep Your Eyes Open

Just thought I'd bump this post again. I generally spray stiltweed with Acclaim when I see it and sweep the wooded areas around the yard for it too, so I was surprised to see it in the main areas of my yard over the last few weeks. I hit it at two week intervals and see to have beaten it back. Keep ...

Re: No-see-ums

I have never tried a good test of this, but I had occasion to be on a crew in a Louisiana swamp for a few days (many years ago). As we drove out the first day I mentioned that I had Avon Skin So Soft to keep bugs away. One guy grabbed it right out of my hand and said, "Will this work for noseeums?"...

Re: Late September planting - Minnesota

Very exciting on the home improvements! I'd go for it. The weather has been a little unpredictable lately so you may get lucky. You will at a minimum get some coverage to help protect the area, even if it isn't as successful as hoped.

I'm riding out this heatwave and letting the grass grow until Sunday when it cools to highs in the 80s. Also, planning on more aggressive Serenade apps.

On Sunday, Applied 10-10-10 to the entire yard and beds. Missed the rain on Saturday, so I'll be watering it in by hand today.

That looks great!!
By the way, I thought of you the other day. I never knew what your picture was about, but it seemed familiar. So, I was watching Forrest Gump with my family a few days ago and the light bulb went off :)!

Thanks to everyone!

I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who has helped to guide me in this lawn journey... I've learned so much, including great patience and that beauty can be fleeting. Here are some pictures showing the lawn that I am super proud of and that, frankly, I never thought I could achieve. https://i.po...

Japanese Beetles and Basil plants

It seems that Japanese beetles are attacking my wife's basil plants. I see some great ideas for roses, I haven't seen any posts on controlling for edibles. It looks like picking by hand, spraying with soapy water and traps are on the internet, but advice is inconsistent and I worry that traps may at...

Re: DevilDawg81’s New Lawn - Day 73

I haven’t had my sprinklers running for weeks now. We are getting rain about every other day. About a week ago (maybe closer to 10 days) temps were in the 70s. I sprayed quinclorac to knock out some weeds. For the most part I’m pleased with the outcome. I can’t wait to get this in the fall nitrogen...
