Re: 2024: What Did You Do On Your Lawn Today (Cool Season)

Cleaned up the winter storm debris. Tons of small to midsize sticks and hickory nut husks from falling out of the trees during high winds.

Re: Plug aeration do’s and dont’s

With mine, I usually hit the aeration really hard in the fall. My mowers and my Kubota really pack our lawn down quite a bit. I do vary the moving pattern every time, but still get compaction as the soil is moist most of the season.

Re: Plug aeration do’s and dont’s

Usually starting with, "Don't aerate." ;-) There are exceptions, but... With a yard as big as his, my guess is he is probably using a pretty large mower to get it done. I have 45K square feet and have a ztr, a Kubota BX and another rider, but each of those compacts my lawn every season. It needs a ...

Re: Round up Extended control accident

I know this all too well as I did this last year by mistake!! I killed my entire front lawn. For mine, I aggressively raked what it killed (which was pretty much all of it) and then I spread a mix of topsoil and compost on it and re-seeded. Had decent recovery last fall, but it is just starting to g...

Re: Japanese Stiltgrass: Keep Your Eyes Open

I have one singular area that is relatively small that it seems to be coming in from a nearby pasture. The area is not grass as it is where I store our firewood and is stone and sandy loam. no grass. When I have seen it, I have hit it with RU and it hasn't spread at all. Just staying super vigilant ...

Re: Any opinions on watering everyday after a drought....

I think every yard has "that spot" that looks bad in the full sun. Our yard has it in an area where the guy who built our home used sand to fill this spot and then topped it with a few inches of topsoil. Looks great in spring. By mid June-August it looks bad. Returns around October. Really needs to ...

Re: Weed, ID Please

I had some of the top pic early last year and it died off when the heat of summer hit it. Only a little came back this year. Seeing my yard is huge, I can't actively put out every little fire (it also borders a cow pasture that has every known weed on it...). I do the best i can keeping the big issu...

Re: Where is the Forsythia Line?

Saw on with a few yellows on it up here in Eastern CT. They were in full sun however and it has been in the 60's and 70's for a week or so. Mine in my yard aren't quite there yet. Probably going to throw down in the next 5-7 days.

Re: Looking Forward to 2021 Season

Plan number #1 is to not use Round Up by accident on the front yard. I now have two separate sprayers for chemicals which will prevent it from ever happening again. Other than that, looking forward to getting rid of the white stuff

Re: Does Nimblewill Die With Winter Weather?

I had it a few years ago and found that I was able to get rid of it my raking it with the thatch rake during the winter when it was dormant, but when the ground wasn't "frozen solid". It eradicated it in one area that was pretty tough.

Re: What's Going on With My Lawn?

I noticed the same thing on my neighbors lawn. At first thought it might have been spot treatments for weeds, but almost looks like fertilizer burn on his. Yours definitely looks like a different issue. the texture of the weed/grass in that pic suggests to me that whatever is there is dying off a bi...

Here in Eastern CT. Growth has slowed a bit, but still pretty good rainfall and climbing temps should make the next few weeks very interesting to say the least.

Re: Best time to kill and reseed?

Looks good. I had two patches in my yard that got accidentally nuked this summer by roundup that are in the stage of a re-seed and comeback. One area looks awesome (like better than before the messup. LOL). the other, not as great, but still coming along.. Used some compost from last years leaf pile...

Re: More than Sprout and Pout?

Understood. Tough year and being on well water, a ton of neighbors wells have been running dry. Obviously trying to avoid that as much as possible. Although, we are down 650 ft, don't want to push my luck. I have been babying my front quite a bit and used some compost to hold moisture with good succ...

Re: More than Sprout and Pout?

Your complaining about 3 weeks, we haven’t had a decent rain since May 😢 This year has me thinking to never give anyone seeding advice if they don’t take watering seriously. Seriously meaning a sprinkler system or at least a semi permanent hose end timer. I just have no faith Mother Nature will get...

Re: More than Sprout and Pout?

Its definitely a water issue. I reseeded my summer mistakes (damn you roundup!) and was seeing some good germination, but the latest dry spell for 3 weeks with nothing has me watering every day again to get it back to where it needs to be. I am just over the RI border in CT so I feel your pain.

I am glad I am not the only one in the drought predicament. That said, Mine rebounded a little with steady feeding of milorganite, but normally strong areas look a little frail. Been a weird summer...

Re: How many weeks when it's green again?

Mine has been awakening nicely in spots. I started some milorganite a few weeks ago and it started to green up. Still some spots that got hammered by full sun are struggling.
