Re: Ken-n-Nancy Soil Test - Summer 2014

Quick note on mulching.. if you have a push mower it might be better to upgrade to a more powerful machine. I tried different blades on my old one, and no matter what it just couldn't chop them up. I bought the Honda HRX and that thing mulches tall thick grass / leaves/ anything ;-) I do have an el...

Re: Ken-n-Nancy Soil Test - Summer 2014

First off, I want to thank you and all of ST6 for your efforts interpreting soil tests. Your labors are a big factor in the success realized by members here! It's good that you did a test and separated the front where they brought in new topsoil, from the side zone. I'm glad I did that too. In the l...

Re: Ken-n-Nancy's 2014 Back Yard Renovation / Side Yard Over

With the old grass dead and the re-grading finished, the first 8 yards of loam/compost mix arrived. Now for the fun task of spreading 16 yards of soil by hand ... "sixteen tons, what do you get?" Does this count as good quality husband-wife time? ;) http://www.solidrocksolutions.com/aty/Pile-of-Dirt...

Wow, that looks awesome. The grading looks as flat as a table-top, with a very nice even slope. Impressive!

Re: Ken-n-Nancy Soil Test - Summer 2014

And - by the way - it is interesting in that - where they brought in new topsoil for the front yard to improve it - your test indicates it is not as good as the side yard where they didn't... I agree it's definitely interesting to see that my "old soil" is better in some ways than the "new soil" th...

Re: Ken-n-Nancy Soil Test - Summer 2014

I'm not sure whether or not I want to tackle micros. If you feel a micro is particularly deficient, I'll do it. However, if any given micro level is mediocre or better, I'm inclined to let it ride for the fall and then address it in the spring after a new soil test. I've thought about the micros a ...

Re: Gryd's 2014 Front Yard Renovation Take 2

It wasn't a typo -- I prefer the alternate spelling which is like Titanium. That is a recognized alternate spelling and is a little more creative! In my opinion, Tenacity is w-a-y better than nothing, but is a so-so Pre-M. As a post-emergent, nothing touches it for effectiveness if you have a solid...

Re: Gryd's 2014 Front Yard Renovation Take 2

What could you possibly have to renovate unless you want to go to a blend? An Unobtanium monostand. Not sure what "unobtanium" means and I even looked it up! I think a minor typo led you on a wild goose chase. I usually see it spelled Unobtainium . My guess is that the "Emblem" monostand is the one...

Re: Ken-n-Nancy Soil Test - Summer 2014

Just received the soil test results from Logan Labs at noontime! It seems like both the front yard soil and the side yard soil are reasonable, but each needs a fair bit of improvement in various areas. I'm glad I got the front yard tested separately from the side, as it tested significantly differen...

Re: Ken-n-Nancy's 2014 Back Yard Renovation / Side Yard Over

It's been a week since my last post, so I figured I should update with current status. Haven't done anything new in the front yard other than continued mowing, although you can just see the edge of the back yard renovation area at the right side of the picture below. The front yard is due for anothe...

Re: Collecting soil samples

After seeing that a $5.00 bulb planter seems to be the tool of choice for most soil samplers, I was inwardly embarrassed to have spent $19.50 on a soil sampler earlier this summer before I found the BL/ATY forums. However, last week, when taking soil samples last week to send off to Logan Labs, I fo...

Re: best source/price for Tenacity?

After reading the many success stories here with applying Tenacity at seeding of a renovation on bare ground, I've decided to order some Tenacity (mesotrione) to apply at seed-down to try to prevent weed competition as much as possible. Just an update to this thread that as of today, the price at La...

Re: New Home and new challenge.....

I've never done pure KBG or any PRG. Is it possible to seed a mix of KBG/PRG and have the yard turn out as KBG over the long run? I'm in S.E.P.A and KBG time is near. I'm a complete newbie to this site, and don't yet know much about successful lawn care from experience. (I have lots of experience i...

"Weed-n-Feed" left over from before BL/ATY - How To Use It?

I find myself in a circumstance that must be very common for a lot of newbies to this site... Before I found out about BestLawn / AroundTheYard (BL/ATY), I bought various lawn fertilizers when they were at sale prices, to save them for future applications. In specific, earlier this year before learn...

Re: Ken-n-Nancy's 2014 Back Yard Renovation / Side Yard Over

Had initially made this posting in my Ken-n-Nancy Soil Test - Summer 2014 thread, but realized it really belongs here, as it is less about soil management and more about the planned back yard renovation... How much sun gets into that back yard? The house and tree line would seem to limit that opport...

How much sun gets into that back yard? The house and tree line would seem to limit that opportunity. Earlier today, I had answered the above question in this post, but when I thought about it further on my drive in to work, my answer was more talking about the renovation and less about the soil man...

Re: Ken-n-Nancy Soil Test - Summer 2014

While we can't be positive because we don't know the lab's tests, I can see that you are showing a 4:1 ratio of Ca:Mg, which is probably close to having symptoms of a "hard, more difficult to work" soil. Did you do the screwdriver tests yet? I had not yet done an official "screwdriver test" yet, al...

Re: Ken-n-Nancy Soil Test - Summer 2014

Thanks for the welcome! I fully understand about Soil Team 6 not being able to open the floodgates on interpreting results from other labs. I'm glad to help update the FAQ article for " Steps to Overseeding. Steps to New Establishment " so that other newbies like me don't send a soil test to the wro...

Re: Ken-n-Nancy's 2014 Back Yard Renovation / Side Yard Over

I haven't given up on finding SOP at a reasonable price yet, but I'm out of suppliers I've bought things from before. I'm now moving on to contacting other vendors that would be new to me... I got SOP from JDL 2 years ago(I think I paid $68), this year I bought it from Kelp4less (I'm not needing as...
