Re: Poa Trivialis Nightmare at the Poa Plantation
I'm not suggesting anyone else do what I'm about to describe... But I've never waited weeks for the grass to die before seeding. Heck, I applied roundup (spot sprayed some remaining green areas), two hours before seeding my last renovation. Everything came up just fine. [ Post made via Mobile Device...

Re: Challenges to expect
Hey Gary,
If I recall my scouting handbook, it goes "Leaves of three? Leave it be. Berries white? Poisonous sight." Wow. I can't believe I still remember that.

Re: Soil Management - Redux
Drinyth, You don't have to do the whole yard at once. I did my front and side yards the first year and divided the backyard into two and did that over the following two years. If you aren't totally convinced, do one portion of your front/side. (like the part in front and beside your garage -- if you...

Re: Lawn nose dive
I keep my own lawn at 4.25 for most of July and August and I don't have any problems with fungi. Of course, my renovation is going into it's fifth year. (so it's a pretty mature stand now).

Re: Lawn nose dive
nice turn around KOG. Yup. That, apparently, was simply drought stress. The good news is that you now know the signs to look for (for drought stress). If you keep pushing the lawn like that, the grass will learn to grow a deeper root system and it will, with time, become better able to handle stress...

Re: Soil Management - Redux
Yup. Unless you have a total failure, you'll have a lawn the following summer. You'll have a lawn that spring too. You might have a few bare spots that you'll want to patch. But by that summer you should certainly have a lawn. It won't have the color you'll eventually see at that point. In fact, in ...

Re: Soil Management - Redux
Ah Drinyth, I think the spousal problem is a really short-term one. My wife is thrilled with the way the lawn looks now. I think for most people it's a couple of months of pain and sacrifice. But you know you want to renovate. You know in your heart that you are going to do it eventually. Don't figh...

Re: Lawn nose dive
Those areas look much darker (almost black in some spots) If Mallory's idea is correct, Pythium goes through a stage where the grass gets dark and can feel "greasy". If you touch it to see if its greasy, wash your hands before touching any other grass or plants. That is correct. You'll also want to...

Re: Lawn nose dive
Hey KOG, My first thought is that those dark areas are some sort of lawn disease. Those areas look much darker (almost black in some spots), than what I've seen with my own lawn when it's been drought stressed. Of course, it would help if you could show us some closeups of the areas that we're discu...

Yeah. I think they're charging home owners more. I note that before telling him I was using it for my lawn he charged me $25 plus tax. Since telling him, he's been charging roughly $32 plus tax. I've convinced my brother-in-law (lives five houses up from me) to go organic too. I've already told him ...

We've had a request that we all post photos of our lawns. This is the place to do it.

Strange to see that photo again. I've added a split rail fence and some new beds along the fence. (yes, I've applied roundup. Simpson drove by the other day and can attest to that.) As I was applying the RU for the new beds, I recall thinking - 'the neighbors are really gonna think I'm nuts now.' [ ...

This is one experiment which I am really interested in following. Please keep us updated. (this is the opposite of quirky's bluegrass in Georgia experiment.) But I have a feeling that if you are anywhere near St. Louis that you're not going to have much of a lawn next spring. St. Louis has really co...

Re: No kill renovation/overseed
There is no better place to do a lawn renovation than East "Fallowfield." ;) sorry for the pun. I can't help myself. :) (I live in the Nottingham area and I still haven't seen the sheriff). I bought midnight 2 and moonlight from rose agri-seed in Oregon. The link I provided shows some of their blend...

Re: No kill renovation/overseed
Hey Seven333,
I know where you are quite well. (My in-laws live up the hill about 100 yards from Brandywine hospital.)
I think you'll do well with a renovation. There are quite a few folks in this area who've done this and have been very happy.
