Re: Dormant seeding and starter fertilizer

Ok, this is the internet, the 21st century saloon, we're all standing at the bar and somebody starts yapping about throwing seed down before it snows, a few of the more cynical patrons go, "oh yeah?" does this really work, or has the guy at the end of the bar had to many? possibly a bs'r anyway? th...

Re: organics in renovated lawn?

Honestly, I'd wait until spring before bothering and go with synthetics this fall, assuming you've been synthetic in the past.

If you've been organic for at least a year, you can go right back to it now.

Re: Kelp & Fish Fertilizer questions

Metric. Metrick. Met Rick, had lunch, called a cab. ;-) I had to translate square feet to square meters so the liters and milliliters and meters and kilograms all worked out. I really like the SI system, it's easy, but going back and forth to American is a nightmare (which is our fault, not yours......

Re: Kelp & Fish Fertilizer questions

Metrick...um...yeah. :-) Pardon me if I use the American spelling; I can't consistently type litre without it coming out liter anyway. 2 mL per liter equals 1.5 teaspoon per gallon, or more than close enough. Yep, use that or, if you find it's taking forever, bounce it up a notch or two or three. Ov...

24 ounces over 4,300 is fine, and if you get a bit of chlorosis out of it it'll fade as soon as the microbes die back. No big deal and no harm done, 6-ish ounces per thousand simply isn't that much. Yes, you can certainly justify excess organic nitrogen with having a new lawn, but no justification i...

Re: best seed for lawn

Midnight II has excellent drought resistance characteristics, so much so that mine never wilt. The Bedazzled goes first and gets watered, the Midnight II just keeps chugging along.

I'm sure Bestlawn can give us the entire list. :-)

So very good soil indeed...I'm stuck with silty clay and no sand to speak of. Just keep adding the OM. Over time, the worm population will rise and turn the soil, carrying it into that harder layer for you. For the tree that's doing poorly, don't be at all afraid to apply 2 to 5 times as much OM the...

K31... Most in this forum will look like this..   Dad has 10k front yard and we guess he mows around an acre. Its all been seeded with K31. All he really does to the front yard is water when it needs it and keeps the weeds out. I think it looks great. I don't have a new Merced...

Yeah, me too. My brick wall is at 7.1, which will be a bit of a battle. I dearly hope all the rain, acidic as it is, turned that down a bit and moved the wall. Maybe so, maybe no. So yep, lime, but judiciously, enough to undo the 0.4 drop. Call it about 30 pounds per thousand of standard pelletized,...

Re: KBG mix for Northeast OH

Morph recommended annother application of starter fertilizer in 30 days. That is currently my next planned application of something granular. Don't mix those with starter...phosphorus can be a little touchy about what it's mixed with. Milorganite is better, and you can drop that at any time in any ...

Wow, that's got more P in it than my dogs do! I'd love to know where the copper, manganese, and zinc came from, too. And why Boron wasn't reported...or organic matter. You can use urea (45-0-0) as a fertilization on that lawn, and the normal rate would be 2 pounds per thousand about four times per y...

Re: Crabgrass control

Morpheus, what's a good place to purchase Dimension for next spring. Some of the website are quoting ~200 for 6 lbs. Also, for Tupersan, most of the local stores don't carry plain Tupersan as it is equally as expensive as the one that comes with the starter fertilizer. Is it safe buy starter with T...

Re: best seed for lawn

2009 being what it was, Pennsylvania ain't bad neither. :-) If you put down around 1" of water and go away for a week, you'll be fine with TF. No problem. I'll even let you go away for 1 1/2 to 2 weeks except in extremely hot dry weather. :-) So many people with it don't irrigate during the summer m...

Re: Finally, seeds are down(Day 1)

Everyone keeps mentioning the optimal conditions for KBG germination... exactly what are the optimal conditions? I mean besides things like soil conditions which is a huge basket of things. Is it a certain range for the air temp? Or soil temp? Sunny or not sunny? Moist of course, and I realize that...

Re: Crabgrass control

Next spring is great after the grass has had either three mowings or a winter to sit and mature. Dimension absolutely can't be used in seed beds as the losses will be 90% on your grass seed from the get-go. By next spring, you don't really have a new renovation. You have a young lawn. :-) So you'll ...

Re: Too much starter fertilizer on renovated seedbed?

14K...oh. Oops. OK, let's do the math, and I'm assuming you used 40% of the bag since you said more than a third, less than a half. That number should be close enough. The bag contains 50 lbs (well, 49.78, but close enough). So 40% of the bag is 20 pounds over 1,900 square feet, or 10.5 pounds per t...

Re: Crabgrass control

Yeah, I short-cut that answer. Dimension provides fair post-emergent control on young crabgrass, but you can't use that on a new renovation. Tupersan won't kill already sprouted crabgrass, and control across the board seems spottier from the reports I've heard. I never used it; the price was prohibi...

Re: Too much starter fertilizer on renovated seedbed?

I'm guessing you have the 5,000 square foot bag to apply over 1,900 square feet. If not, please correct me as the answer may change. If that's correct, you're fine. You should have used about 38% of the bag. As long as you're sure you didn't go over half, you're still within normal ranges, although ...

Sprout all summer long in the wet weather until I put down Dimension in August. I was spot-spraying with Certainty.

I'm hoping a year of Dimension breaks the cycle a bit. We'll see.

Re: Soil test results help

Totally agreed. The off-brands are just as good as the Big Name stuff, and I found a nice starter fertilizer to boost my P levels without pushing up K--which is exactly what I needed. If we averaged your potassium level and mine, we'd actually have almost the right amount...if still a bit high... St...
