Re: Why Do I Bother?

All done. Removal of dirt from grass this thick is harder than I thought; I ended up scrabbling at 200 square feet with my nails. Which are now broken, bleeding, and generally stiff and sore. But I wanted to get it out of there before they came back with the backhoe (which they did, stopped, said "H...

Re: Why Do I Bother?

New Update! They're putting the soil back today and actually doing a fairly decent job of it. Sort of. I'll go out with a rake later and clear the remainder. The grass seems to have survived, and is about to get a nice big dose of iron, kelp, and humates to restore it to its previous glory. The dug ...

Re: Top Growth Has Stopped

(Annoying Beep) Update, Lehigh Valley PA....topgrowth restarted, temperatures are 70 degrees (soil temperatures rising back over 50), and hold the winterizer...next update looks to be next week sometime as this weather will hold through that period. This has been an announcement by the Lehigh Emerge...

Re: Newbie w Soil Test: Thank you for all the help this season!

Cool! Don't worry about the salts in winterizer, though. It's too chilly to be an issue now, and they'll have long since leached out by spring. One (or more) cheats per year on organic feeding isn't a problem--I had to use starter this year myself to get my phosphorus levels up. From the worm counts...

That and maybe we should start the Bestlawn Book Club with "Teaming With Microbes" and "Turfgrass Science and Culture."

I move a fair bit inside to keep myself amused during winter...

Re: No "Mount Compost"!!!

Same thing here. I'm just passing 1,500 pounds of leaves, many many bags, and spinning around the house. I still have about 1/3 left to go, but I'll get more of that done tomorrow. Where I started, the leaves completely disappeared, and the only place with anything appreciable is one small area wher...

Re: Top Growth Has Stopped

Stopped in the Lehigh Valley on most lawns. Not mine yet, but I'm the exception, and it's definitely slowing even on this grass.

Soil temperatures are still a bit warm for winterizer, but you could already get away with it if you wanted.

Re: Rate you lawn care Season of 2009

P. annua definitely knocks off one point from my lawn...where it doesn't have it, it's a 9.5 or so. I'd still like to improve density, the feel underfoot, and color.

The other half point comes off from the damage out front. Not my fault, fixable, but still ugly.

What, me exacting? Why, yes...

Re: Why Do I Bother?

I'm beginning to wonder. However, with the spread of KBG I don't think I'll have too much issue past July of next year at all, if even that long. Dimension will control the weeds while the grass spreads in. I do have to see how much grass I have compared to the amount I need; I may not seed at all. ...

Re: Landscape Lighting

Yeah, photographing landscape lights is tough as they never show that well. I have a line to the door, several scattered through the gardens, and the patio gently illuminated out back. Not much, but enough to keep the bears at bay. :-)

Re: Rate you lawn care Season of 2009

8 or so. Lawn density increased, rainfall was more than adequate, the summer was reasonable, but I did get some P. annua, as usual, even through the Dimension.

Re: Some people are so rude with their dogs

I tend to look at dog poo as free OM, so that doesn't bother me...and I'm organic enough to neutralize the excess N in the pee. Really go more into detail please. I have never thought about that Sure thing. Carbon to Nitrogen ratio is the key to avoid lawn burning with dog pee. I have three dogs, B...

Still, I have three dogs. None would be allowed to go on any lawn but our own--ever. The hose is a great idea, as is the Scarecrow. Alternately, import skunks...

Close enough; I used it on the back line when the Township tore that up last year (hum. I'm seeing a pattern here)...

Regardless, I can't tell the difference and I'm exceptionally picky.

I Feel A Bit Guilty...

I've had a Spathiphyllum (peace lily) for the last ten years since my gallbladder surgery. The last year or so, it's been getting frowsy and nothing I do restores it. I finally ditched it and I'm feeling terribly guilty about it, actually. I replaced it with one of the largest garden snapdragons, so...

Re: Why Do I Bother?

We are talking about a bureaucracy, here, Ohio... Gary: Nope, not over this. Over another bit of lawbreaking that's bothered me for a while, but gets ignored because somebody seems to know a supervisor or something. I need to do a bit of poking; people are interesting. They can't keep their mouths s...
