17.1" official here, which was shoveled yesterday. 35 mile an hour winds dumped that and more on the driveway overnight. Fun. Not.
We're buying a snow blower soonest. I had to call my mother to bring hers over today to get us out.

Re: Snowpocalypse II (Electric Boogaloo)
They've adjusted our forecast to start the snow at 4 PM...10 PM and we've had a few flurries. The new amount is 12-18 inches, which by Weatherperson Inches is usually 2 to 3.
We'll see.

Snowpocalypse II (Electric Boogaloo)
This time even we're forecast to receive 10 to 20 inches. Personally, I'll believe it when I see it...the last time they did this (Friday night) we got four. Fortunately I do NOT need to go to the store, it's a madhouse, I'm sure. I did make more soap today, though--a delightful olive oil, coconut o...

Re: Soil Test Results -- looking for some advice please
Got it - I think. I thought at first that this would be from a system out of balance, but what you are saying is starting to sink in. I know there are different bacteria that process different forms of N in the nitrogen cycle - even denitrifying bacteria that release N back into the atmosphere. If ...

Re: Soil Test Results -- looking for some advice please
M-PA, You are right - technically a humate (humic acid) will have no N whatsoever - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humic_acid - but will be rich in carbon. The way I see it, if a test is done right, it should show all of the N in your soil at that time, which is better than no information, for sure. ...

Re: Soil Test Results -- looking for some advice please
Mostly because the tests just aren't all that necessary or indicative of actual soil health. When you look at the metric of available N and organic material, it gives you a better idea--but still not a great one. OM can be new, decayed, or humates. The new stuff dumps N. The decayed trickles N. The ...

Re: Soil Test Results -- looking for some advice please
Agreed. Nitrogen flips forms due to bacterial action, and very rapidly. Our organics mess it up by not even being in nitrate and nitrite form yet, but instead flipping to there as it decays. Nitrate nitrogen varies by time of day, moisture level, temperature, plant absorption, out-gassing and washin...

I guess Snowpocalypse was a bust around here, anyway. Four inches tops. Thirty minutes to completely clean it out, and it was a light snow anyway.

That would also be a color rating of 0--white, no green color in lawn.
Never fear, mine will do the same thing later today. We're projected to receive 8 to 12 inches of snow this afternoon and evening.

I was looking at the picture in your blog with the Jan post date. Yours still looks nicer than what mine does, but I feel a little better now. That December picture is killer, mine looked about what yours does now [ Post made via Mobile Device ] http://aroundtheyard.com/forums2/images/mobile.png So...

Re: Organics in the spring
Morpheus, Not really related to the topic, but do you use a drop spreader, rather than broadcast spreader, to get the straight line down between your property and the neighbours'? Broadcast, actually, and I almost always wing over into the neighbors' lawns although I do try to limit that. The diffe...

I'd say your lawn looks pretty good for the lengths of cold we've gotten. Re: Organics in the spring
Even the Midnight II did very well this year, but the Bedazzled and Moonlight do seem to do better. Even so, if it were May I'd call the color absolutely awful. It's green, but rather sickly looking really.

And although we were normal on precipitation during December, we didn't made it in January and February looks like a bust. Thanks for stealing the East Coast's rain there, David.

Re: Organics in the spring
'Round here, nature doesn't Whisper much. It just kind of goes from asleep to full voice... I clock mine in March when the weather goes from cold to Not Quite As Cold, realizing that March around here is wildly changeable. That's still 2 months before our last frost date, but growth on most things s...

Re: Just got my Soil Test Results Back! Any advice and/or Help
Theoretically, any time at all. Organics don't overfeed and won't be available if the weather is incompatible (too cold or dry). Your profile says Fayetteville, NC, where the temperatures look to be in the forties, so it's a bit too cold yet to bother. The birds will get a lot of that corn (but will...

Re: WTF!?
Can't you just do that feeding organically? My KBG has no thatch at all, it never has any time to build up before the umpteen quintillion bacteria attack it. You can almost see the translucent wave of bacteria shifting across the lawn searching for a light lunch. Black layer, now that I gots me some...

Re: Organics in the spring
Nope, you can throw organics around with abandon--they won't overfeed the lawn at any point and won't become available until the weather is compatible.
I start in March, and the lawn doesn't get moving until April.

Pretty much the same here. The last 3 days have been frigid and finally took down the lawn, but before that the weather was average to a touch warm. Since Groundhog's Day marks the change to Really Extremely Early Spring Not That You'd Notice (But At Least It Isn't Quite So Cold), we'll see what the...

Re: Just got my Soil Test Results Back! Any advice and/or Help
What GWG said. ANY source of organic material is a good source, as long as it's not contaminated with something. OPLs (Other People's Leaves) are a great source, but for obvious reasons mostly available in fall. Free compost, well-done and of known origins, is also great. Cracked corn's cheap. Milor...
