Re: Chickweed in New Lawn

Once the lawn's wintered through, it's established and you can use weed killers. The fourth mow rule is really for the same year. Your lawn's now spent fall and spring establishing roots, so it's definitely ready. I'd still be cautious and spot-spray the chickweed, but even an area spray won't hurt...

Re: My turn to post soil test results

OK, Andy, I visited my Lowe's and saw two liming products. Maybe you can steer me on which to use in what amount(s). 1. Pelletized dolomitic lime Calcium 21.6% Magnesium 10.0 Calcium Oxide 30.2 Magnesium Oxide 16.7 Calcium Carbonate 54.0 Magnesium Carbonate 36.0 CCE 95.0 2. Pennington Fast Acting Li...

Re: My turn to post soil test results

Interestingly, Glenforest forwarded me a copy of the soil report, and there IS a recommendation about maximum lime in a single application. It's on the comments page and buried. It says that if the recommended amount is greater than 100 lbs, then split it into two applications 4 to 6 months apart. ...

Re: My turn to post soil test results

I'd like to see a discussion of having you bag (but not off to the compost pile) every other mowing to get that P number reduced some. Yeah, it might mean a bit more Nitrogen at some point. But I'm concerned that if you're going to a more organic program, the soil mycorrhizal fungi will not coloniz...

Re: My turn to post soil test results

For the fungus issue, if you can get your hands on some cracked corn or corn meal, 10 to 20 pounds per thousand square feet should help considerably. You can spot apply where you have issues or do the whole lawn, and repeat at need. If the areas are pretty small, 1 tsp baking soda and 1/2 ounce or ...

Re: My turn to post soil test results

There's enough phosphorus in that soil that I'm surprised it doesn't glow after darkfall. :-) Yep, send some here...I have 9 ppm. I'll take 10 more. Other than that, information is kind of limited from that report. Is your grass doing OK? Did you have a specific goal in mind? I've read that P is no...

My turn to post soil test results

Hi, last time I took chemistry was several decades ago. Any interpretations or suggestions welcome. My soil test results from Penn State: Front Soil pH: 6.8 Phosphorus: 389 ppm (no, not a typo; the paper almost isn't wide enough for the bar graph) Potassium: 107 ppm Exchangeable Cations (meq/100g): ...

Re: help me analyze the failure

When you say the seed landed on the roots, do you mean on top of the roots of the existing grass? This could be part of the problem. The seed needs to be in good contact with the soil and kept moist to germinate and grow successfully. It sounds as if you did the watering part, but perhaps you need t...

Re: Why Soil Tests are so important - personal story

FWIW - I visited Cornell's soil testing site and loved their overall report. I sent an email to them asking if they would accept a non-resident test. I have been turned away by UCON already. U of IL. does not offer one. I have used Penn State for soil tests. The website doesn't say anything about s...

Re: Preventing Deer Damage

Andy, Have you tried Coyote urine? I kid you not. There are places that sell this stuff and some people even claim that it works. I put some coyote urine out in the yard in the small bottles they make for it. Then one day I'm at work and my wife calls me: Wife: "There's a deer over by the dawn redw...

Re: Seed Superstore - has anyone heard of them?

I have purchased seed from Seedsuperstore in the past. I have emailed and talked to Drew, the owner, a couple of times, and he seems to be a very nice guy who knows a lot about grass. I think his website is much more consumer oriented than those of the other seed suppliers, and it contains a lot of ...
