Re: Proactive Very Late Fall Gypsum
I don't know, it depends who owns the streets and manages them. Our neighborhood technically owns our streets, so we do our own street maintenance. I suppose if we all wanted to pay more dues we could have them salted, but frankly - plowing is fine. It's not like you're driving more than 25 in a ne...

Re: Proactive Very Late Fall Gypsum
Well, the salt trucks will start running here tonight with 2". They don't us salt in the subdivision though, so Im good. I a going to put up markers next to the sprinkler head by the curb so people don't park on my sprinkler heads. Hoosier, is the no salt in subdivisions an Indiana thing? Prior to ...

Re: What did you do to or on your lawn today?
This weekend is helping to cement my newly-earned reputation as the goofy old yard guy on the block. Yesterday, I several people driving by saw me dragging yard bags full of leaves from my neighbor's driveway across the street to my yard. Since I put down urea and hadn't watered it in yet, I left th...

Re: Urea drop and watering it in??
The irrigation system has already been winterized and I (eventually) discovered that my hoses contained frozen water yesterday, right after I dropped the urea, so I had to thaw the hoses in the garage over night. Today, I'm using the old-fashioned sprinklers and hose method to put down ~1/2" of wate...

Watering in urea (~ 1/2" of water) with old-fashioned sprinklers and hose; it definitely makes me appreciate my irrigation system!

Re: What did you do to or on your lawn today?
I dropped off my soil sample at FedEx, on it's on its way to Logan. Applied 13 lbs of urea to my 6500 square foot lawn. Since my irrigation system has already been winterized and there is little precipitation forecast for the next week, I had to dig around the garage for the old plastic sprinkler. G...

Nah, my SJB was (is?) located in Hammond, the armpit of Indiana known as the Calumet Region. Steel mills, oil refineries, asphalt plants. Until they all closed up. Our 1st-through-8th grade school of about 300 workinig-class kids consisted of 295 souls of Eastern European descent, 4 EYE-talians, and...

Brings back memories of those early tee times we used to have in my yute--3rd group off. By October, my favorite month to play, we would consistently have "frost delays" to the start times.

Oze, love your sense of humor!! Trouble is; there's darn few of us left. Tony Tony, Must be survival instinct from the Catholic school upbringing we both seem to have survived. I had two nuns that also taught my father, and let's just say they had it in for me before I set foot into 1st grade at St...

Re: OK to do soil test now instead of spring?
Thanks. In my case nothing has gone down recently...last fertilizer was a month ago. No amendments (other than sprinkling some coffee grounds from my small coffee maker each day on a different part of the lawn...I hardly think that would do much haha) So I'm off now, to find the posts/articles abou...

Tony, great craft idea! Best use of 45 rpms since watching them getting blown up at old Comiskey Park during Disco Demolition. But I digress. Did you ever melt crayons into used pot pie tins, then quickly plunge the whole thing into a bucket of ice water when you were a kid? Fantastic visuals (watch...

Re: Help with Fall plan
I'm no expert but I believe yes, you should be applying 2lbs p 1,000sqft. I'm going to be putting mine down and watering in tomorrow afternoon. I saw this on another thread, so remember that it is 2 pounds of urea per 1000 square feet, assuming you have a 46-0-0 product. In any case, the amount of ...

Re: OK to do soil test now instead of spring?
Thanks, Andy. Nothing doing in my yard since an application of Scotts 27-3-2 on September 17th. I just grabbed some samples with the bulb planter; maybe an unnecessary step, but the soil is spread out on newspaper in the garage (force of habit). I'll send it to Logan in a coupla days, if I can convi...

Re: OK to do soil test now instead of spring?
You can do it now. The only thing that varies heavily is Nitrogen, which varies so much that we ignore it. Don't plan on doing any modifications now - the plan we build will be for 2015. Where are you "near Albany"? I was actually thinking along these same lines, getting a sample before I drop the ...

Oze, Im about 60-70 miles south of you, just south of Muncie. I used to work in Ft Wayne an lived in Bluffton for a couple years. Re: RPR: Is there an update?
My personal experience is that I wouldn't rely on an overseed and grass' ability to spread to get exactly what I wanted. I tried for years to overseed KBG into a mix and it just never dominated. (Admittedly, I didn't really know what I was doing!) I ended up frustrated, hit the internet for differe...
