Re: Height of Cut (HOC) Best Practice

One thing I've noticed is that weeds that dont handle being cut short dont do well at lower heights of cut, but then others that would normally be suppressed by a taller, thicker canopy do better. Clover and chickweed do better at lower HOC. Dandelions and wild onion not so much. Quackgrass is hard...

Re: Height of Cut (HOC) Best Practice

Ok, looks like I'll be staying at 4" for now... My goal at this point is to deepen the roots and crowd out weeds. With all of the rain and food I'm throwing down, the grass is definitely happy. We'll see how it is doing in August. That seems to be the test. Thanks guys!

Dinosaurs vs Volcanos. Who will win the great lawn duel. Sounds like a movie. :duel:

Re: Height of Cut (HOC) Best Practice

+1. There is no single "best practice". I slowly increase HOC as the Spring progresses, and some years I max-out at 3" or a little more, and some years I go to 4". As long as it stays healthy, I do what I feel looks best in current conditions. Andy, why do you slowly increase the HOC in the spring?...

Volcanic ash? Seems that a soil test and a conditioning plan with BLSC is a better solution.

Re: 2019: What Did You Do On Your Lawn Today?

Put down 160 lbs of Milo at bag rate, trimmed trees to raise the canopy a bit, soothing aches with adult beverage on a beautiful late afternoon. Rain is coming tonight :).

Re: Please help save my lawn

Hugo, I'd recommend you read the guides in the articles and FAQ areas. This will help you with basics of cutting, watering and triangle approach to weeds. Next, get a soil test following the instructions. Use MUST use Logan Labs, if you want help from the experts here. https://aroundtheyard.com/foru...

Re: Possibly looking to upgrade my spreader

I have about 17,000sqft of quite hilly lawn. The Earthway 2170 works well so far, but fully loaded is a bear to push even with the nice pneumatic tires. I tend to keep the fills less than 100lb capacity for this reason. Good workout though :)

Height of Cut (HOC) Best Practice

I am wondering what best practice might be for HOC on lawns and what factors influence the decision. I've spent some time reading through old posts and it seems that we have a wide set of opinions and practices with anywhere from 1-5". It also seems that weather may be a factor, i.e. fungus issues, ...

Re: Barrier hoops to disperse foot traffic

Great for dogs too! I use small sections of fencing to do this as well, but I like the look of these better. Looks like it may be tripping hazard though when light is low.

Re: Another possible Poa Triv thread

I suspected the same thing in my yard this season and hit all of it with a light "light up" application of Tenacity. It turned out that I was mostly wrong about the Poa. I did have a few small areas of Poa get bleached and dealt with it, but my point is that it quickly helped me answer the pressing ...

I've been finding that my local ACE hardware has Milo in stock and is happy to special order as much as I want. Lowes and HD never have it in my area.

Re: 2019: What Did You Do On Your Lawn Today?

I haven't very active in the forums due to family and work demands, but have been keeping up with my lawn plan. Yesterday, put down 80lbs of 10-10-10 front and rear yard (10lbs/k). Spot sprayed for weeds with Ortho WBG. My main fight now is grassy weeds and hit these with Triclopyr every 2 weeks in ...

Re: Rate Your 2018 Season Results

2018 was my first year on this forum and a year for me to learn patience. No quick fixes for a lawn long neglected. My goals were focused on learning as much as possible, getting a soil plan in place and working the top of the pyramid for weeds (broadleaf and CCO). Overall, I am pretty happy with wh...
