Re: Impatient with small compost tumbler

I'm good with 365 day compost. I have a static pile on the ground behind the garage.

Re: N-Viro Soil....from human waste

As long as you are using it on a lawn and are not creeped out by the use of human waste as a base for compost, then you're good to go. The process is simple composting starting with treated sewage instead of cattle or horse manure. There are federal composting guidelines for biosolids which are not ...

Re: Solarizing

My theory as to why solarization works is this: the moisture forms droplets on the bottom of the clear plastic. Those droplets become lenses that focus the Sun's rays on anything that's underneath raising the temp to hundreds of degrees.

Re: Neutralizing urine

A long term solution is to shovel out all the pea gravel and replace it with several inches of bark mulch. Bark mulch supports the microbes that normally decompose urine. Rocks can't do that. Mulch is also softer on the dog's pads.

That is pretty normal. Sometimes you need to follow up with scissors. How high are you mowing?

Welcome to the forums. We are really glad you found us. Ahhh, I have fond memories of Mun'gum'ry . Give my regards to the Krispy Kreme. I should have opened an account with them. Generally centipede will recover quickly from disease. How often do you water and how high do you mow? As a tip to help m...

Re: compost tea jello

I don't know by name but what you had was bacterial slime. Have you ever picked up a live fish? That's the feel of bacterial slime. Bacteria exude that stuff as a waste product. It is decomposed by anaerobic bacteria. In the soil it is the stuff that glues minerals together to make soil structure an...

Can you take a picture of the nematodes package. "Lady in Red" does not turn up anything.

As far as the nematodes, I doubt anyone knows if the GrubX will harm them. Nematodes are a different breed of cat.

I don't do soil tests but it seems weird that your front pH is 7.2 and they don't want you to lower the pH.

What kind of grass is HTB?

Can you post a picture that shows the color difference you're talking about?

The active ingredient in aquarium dechlorinator is sodium thiosulfate. Dr Ingham has tested it and found that at half the rate needed for dechlorination, it killed 100% of the fungi in the water. Humic acid seems to be the proper dechlorinator. I never used it so I can't help you with any observatio...

Re: How to start organic program/just got soil test results

Have you read the Organic Lawn Care FAQ ? And have you seen the Showcase on the http://aroundtheyard.com home page? Most of those lawns in the showcase are at least mostly organic and follow the FAQ as a basic guideline. Everyone has different issues and dials in their own organic program. That's wh...

Re: Organic Lawn Care - I might try it

Hi talldesk. Have you looked for grubs in your soil? Separate the grass and roots from the soil and dig down a little. Do about a square foot and look for the big C-shaped grubs. They are hard to miss as they are the size of your thumb. It could be the moles are eating grubs. Grubs can be "cured" wi...

Chickens and guinea hens work all year round. The only other organic solution I know of is beneficial nematodes but only when applied in the winter. After the ticks crawl out of the ground there isn't anything organic besides chickens and guinea hens.

Golf course managers are always worried about air circulation but the rest of us never consider it. It takes just enough morning wind to dry the dew off the grass, and without it you might get leaf spot. Even plants/trees just on the windward side of the yard can slow the circulation. Could it be th...

That does seem like plenty of sugar. Please let us know what comes of it. I've done some experimenting with molasses but never got to that kind of rate. Although now that I think of it, when I put a "heaping handful of table sugar" onto a yellow spot where a dog peed, that's probably comparable to w...

Re: Please help me with my game plan to establish a lawn

What you do now is water and mow properly. Those are mandatory :club: ...and there will be a test. Killing weeds is not mandatory but again, you will be surprised at the improvement you see, even in your back yard, from simply watering and mowing. Since your back yard will be renovated anywa...

Re: Harvard Yard Soils Restoration Project

I can't see the link (Document not found), but I'd really like to see that regimen compared to a simpler 2 inch layer of mulch. I've been suggesting mulch since I read that Russian guy's treatise from 1900. Of course you can't put 2 inches of mulch on grass, so maybe this is a good mulch alternative...

billhill said what I was going to say. If you treat your lawn like it was the perfect lawn, you'll be surprised how nice it looks, weeds and all. You may decide not to do anything in the fall. If you wait for the soil test results to come back it will be too warm to fertilize. Seeding now is, simila...
