Rake / Dethatcher for walk behind mower?
The last few times I've mowed my 10M lawn, I've been thinking "boy, I wish I could put a 'comb' on the front of my mower to lift, straighten, and align the grass before it gets cut". I don't really want or need to "dethatch", per se, just comb. I did some searching on the Google machine and found a ...

Re: Difficulty cutting thick lawn
Huh. I’ve been using the battery-powered Super Recycler model for more than a year. I’ve not had trouble with that issue at all. But I realize that you’re probably using the gas-powered model. But I’ve been using the super recycler mowers for 20 years and they’ve always cut thick grass easily. Don'...

Re: Difficulty cutting thick lawn
I seemed to have fixed the problem with the Super Recycler not cutting well. Here's the solution; remove all the "Super" parts (accelerator and kickers), use the high-lift blade, side discharge, overlap by 1/3. 1/3 is better than 1/2. ....I have a theory as to why.

Re: Difficulty cutting thick lawn
Horsepower baby! That SFC30 is a beauty! I have the Toro Timemaster with the 223cc B&S engine and it rips--even in the spring when the lawn is growing like crazy. It looks like the SFC has a 224cc commercial grade Kohler. I'll bet this engine will rip too. I've considered the Time Master, but I rea...

Re: Difficulty cutting thick lawn
I have that problem on occasion with my Honda HRX. I just double cut on those times it happens. Kind of a pain, but unless I want to purchase a commercial mower.... On another topic. You're in the QC area, correct? Have you been able to source urea lately? SiteOne is on backorder. DK Turf wants $50...

Re: Difficulty cutting thick lawn
OP here. Another later summer with the Super Recycler performing less than stellar. I rotate my pattern every time I mow. N-S, E-W, NE-SW, NW-SE. All in an attempt to prevent from ingraining in wheel tracks. It seems to happen anyway. The lawn is thick and healthy, but stays down at where the tracks...

FAS results time frame?
How long does it take for FAS to start having an effect? This time of year my grass always turns super pale. I applied FAS today. I don't know if it's darkened or not. It's still not super dark. In fact, I'm not sure it did much of anything. Would it be ridiculous to spray again? I plan to put down ...

Re: Brown pepperings
I think my problem is I have some cultivars that just can't handle the summer stress. I have 5 cultivars that was in the sod farms mix and they're mostly crap. I "suspect" a couple just can't handle it. I'm following all the "rules" and it still does this every year. Spring and fall are awesome. Sum...

Re: Complements from a stranger
Congrats! I got kinda the opposite reaction from my daughter, who moved to SoCal. I sent her a picture of my lush, striped lawn, and she responded that I am what people there call "A Grasshole". Her backyard is Astroturf. :rotfl: Haha, that's a new term for me! I've heard non-lawn fanatics rant on ...

Re: Complements from a stranger
'Sup with that? I recall the stuff up around Mason City as being rich and dark several inches (feet in some cases, when I bothered to dig that deep) as well. As kids, we were always told that the rich soil was the result of glacial fill. Same here, growing up in SE Iowa and was always told we have ...

Re: Brown pepperings
Yes. It has been hot.
I do have an irrigation system and I have been irrigating 3x per week at ~1/2" per application. (Sandy soil that doesn't retain much water).
I can tell when it starts to get heat stressed because some areas start to turn dark. That's my queue to syringe in peak heat of the day.

Re: Compost Top Dress procedure?
This is a very, very slow process. After seventeen years of back-breaking (not really, and actually, for a 53-year-old, I'm kinda jacked), my OM is up to 13%. I never used compost...but did use leaves. And I eject my gardens into the lawn every year, so that's 2,200 square feet or so of packed flow...

Brown pepperings
Can anyone provide insight on what's happening here? This happens every year with this lawn (I'm on season 5). This year things started out great. Lush green. Almost perfect uniformity. Then the spring flush happened, and is now 99% done. (That's just a data point, not sure it has anything to do wit...

Re: Complements from a stranger
That’s fantastic. I was just thinking about Eastern Iowa soil tonight was I mowed. In Cedar Falls and the surrounding area, you had to dig deep to get through the lush, black soil. God forgot to put that rich black soil in Solon! We have very poor soil here! I'm less that 5mi from the Cedar River o...

Re: Compost Top Dress procedure?
1) Whenever you want, but pretty much no more often than every four to six weeks during the season. 2) No more than a quarter inch at a time as a general rule. ...that's it. Compost isn't a feeding, so spring, summer, fall, whenever except winter. Don't expect miracles. Thanks Morph. No miracles ex...

Compost Top Dress procedure?
I have access to some pretty good compost near me. See this site, and link to technical data sheet: https://www.solidwasteagency.org/compost-yard-waste/compost-wood-chips What are the general rules of thumb regarding application timing and rates? I was thinking about mid-late August and putting down...

Tenacity application timing conundrum
I'm due for my 2nd application of Tenacity any time now. I've neen watching the weather, and as luck would have it there's no good day in the 14-21 day range. I've got low chances of rain forecasted most of the coming week. The one day it's not forecasted, the high temp is 97°F. What would you guys ...
