Re: watering clay soil
My Red Flag indicator just went up. Adding soil, IMHO, is never a good thing unless you are below grade. What will help is growing roots in your soil, watering properly, mowing properly, and not using fungicides. You may already be doing those things. If so then you are on your way and just not ther...

Re: Broad Leaf Weed Control in Floratam
Because I don't have the required pesticide applicators license necessary in order to buy products containing atrazine.
Why do you think "...all the other broad leaf weed killers don't work for Floratam?"

Re: Broad Leaf Weed Control in Floratam
When I used chemicals, and if I were to use them again, I would start with Weed-B-Gone.
St Augustine chokes out easily with an attack of broadleaf weeds, but it will choke out finer bladed grasses.

Okay, learn something new every day. Unfortunately there is no great way to test the effectiveness of such a filter. Pool chemical testers are not sensitive enough.

Re: hose end copper/zinc chlorine filter
Our water is very high in calcium and so is the soil. Back when I used to water with an impact sprinkler, I was continually evaluating where the dry spots were in the yard so I was intimately familiar with the watering and immediate effects. Then I would water those with the rotating fan blade looki...

Re: Watering Equipment
That is a GREAT idea TT. :clapping: :clapping: :clapping: I would use the sled base because my limestone rubble soil is sometimes only an inch deep. Also it is not good for the sprinkler mounting thread structure to be pushing and pulling on it to plant it in the ground. My strong preference is to u...

How can I tell if it is sandy? Find a quart jar and fill it most of the way with clean water. Dump a cup of soil into the water and swish it around. Set the jar down and let it settle. Then the evaluation goes something like this (subject to Andy's further guidance)... Sand settles to the bottom im...

Those large bags of coffee are heavy! Had a guy bring one out to me one time. He was about 6'4" and big. He carried out easily with one hand and set it on the ground in front of me. I tried to pick it up and it probably looked like a Laurel and Hardy movie where suddenly the bag was full of lead for...

Re: Favorite Sprayer recipes for Microbes and other benefits
That's the one. Someone else finally makes a dial type sprayer, too. Also there is another Ortho one that shoots a stream into the trees. The only problems I've had with these is the filter at the bottom of the "down tube" inside will get clogged on occasion. The other is the O-ring underneath the o...

Re: Interpretation needed on Deep, Infrequent Watering
PJD, you'll have to watch the grass for clues. If it does not appear to need water, then wait. If it does appear to need water, then water a little heavy.

You're just trying to share the embarrassment.turf_toes wrote:While I've admittedly overdone it, I'm pretty close to the application rate that Morph used. If I recall, he indicated that he applied 400 pounds of organic fertilizer per 1,000 square-feet last year.

The problem with a pressure washer is that it rips the fungi apart in the process. Is there a way to tune it down?? Think about the mold fungus that grows on bread. It starts as little spots but can turn into a very delicate hairy mess if you leave it a few days. Those don't take much disturbance to...

Re: Favorite Sprayer recipes for Microbes and other benefits
To answer the question to me, the milk goes into the adjustable Ortho sprayer full strength. Then you adjust the dial for 3 ounces per gallon. Where does 3 ounces per gallon come from? It comes from 1 gallon per acre. 1 gal/acre = 3 ounces per 1,000 square feet. Then it is up to you to spray a gallo...

You know it seems like a rookie mistake, but it happened to one of the sage advisors. Maybe we should put more emphasis on measuring areas. That is exactly how the chemical oriented folks kill their lawns, though.

Phenomenology . I had to look that one up - not because I've never seen it before but I've never seen it outside the space engineering mafia. We thought we coined the term back in the 70s to pertain to the science and study of various physical phenomena that space vehicles encounter. I hadn't thoug...

Re: Interpretation needed on Deep, Infrequent Watering
One person's deep and infrequent is different from another person's deep and infrequent. When Mother Nature does not cooperate with you, about all you can do is recover from any "damage" She might have done.
