Re: Ruth 2023 Soil Test
Your soil is showing as a heavy soil with a TEC of almost 19, but I think you have a borderline calcareous soil even though the resulting pH isn't what I'd typically see for a calcareous soil. I'm going to ask that you request an Ammonium Acetate test in 2024 - that will confirm it, or not. The rest...

Re: Infield Fly 2023 Logan Soil Test
I know you're trying mightily, but the Calcium and Magnesium are just so hard to overcome. The resulting pH means it's a real challenge to make progress that's visible - our hands are pretty much tied, and you just have to work on what you can... The Phosphorus is still in need of supplementation, a...

The rate for 10-10-10 is 10 lbs/K.
Mag-I-Cal is OK for the plan.

Re: agn015 2023 Soil Test
but are you saying I should skip the 0-0-50 this year too? You've got the right amount of SOP for your TEC, and the pH is as high as I want to see it go. Applying SOP would raise the pH. No mas. About the compost - if it was composted correctly, the weed seeds would be cooked. I’ve tried the feed s...

Re: BrianM 2023 soil test
Who knows? I'm going to play it conservative with a couple of questionable numbers on the report. Get good calcitic lime and apply at the heavy bag rate, and repeat at 90 day intervals. If you'd like, mix in 2 lbs/K of Epsom Salts. For your fertilizer, find a no-Phosphorus (middle number is 0 or ver...

Re: New Grass in Shade with Acidic Soil
No. Sunlight is needed for the plant to make its food, and water is required just stay alive. And don't forget that trees are very aggressive competitors - a mature Maple can use 40,000 gallons of water a year.

Re: New Grass in Shade with Acidic Soil
The combination of shade and competition for water and nutrients is pretty damned tough on grasses. You can try to lift the canopy some by having lower branches removed so more sun gets to the grass blades. Here's a general rule for figuring out where grass stands a chance - stand under the tree whe...

Re: BrianM 2023 soil test
Brian, where do you live in Westchester County? I've never seen soil that is a TEC of 5, with a OM% of 5. Then I looked at your 2022 test and found that you had a TEC of 3, with a OM% of 5. To be honest, I didn't know it was possible...

I know "Green" recommended taking the advice with a grain of salt. I would advise that you take it with a pound or two of salt - the guy at VG repeated every hackneyed piece of poor info on the planet.

Re: krebsy's 2023 Soil Test
Morph said last year that this one made his head hurt. This year's is giving me a migraine. The year-to-year pattern is all over the board. The pH is 7.5 in 2021, 7.0 in 2022 and 7.7 this year. The Potassium jumps from 185 last year to 266 this year. I'm gonna take a guess that you have a clay soil ...

I don't know if it will make a sticky mess when you dampen it or not. There is no testing done that I'm aware of. There is nothing chemically that is wrong with doing it.

Mo is a bit low at 0.12. Maybe a tablespoon per K would lift it to 0.2 ppm. Range is 0.15 to 0.5.

Re: agn015 2023 Soil Test
I could nitpick this in several places, but it wouldn't tell the way I reacted when I did the first read. My thought was "you're almost there". Look, I'd like see the the pH a little lower. I'd like to see the TEC and OM a little higher. It's all minor. So, you're basically into tweaking the little ...

Re: Gold Tag KBG getting harder to find?
I found a lot of broken links and indications of hacking to the website of SSS.
Sadly the owner of SSS (Drew Kinder) died in December, 2020. I may have disagreed with the SSS pricing, but the man did know what he was talking about when it came to lawns.

Re: Zambroni 2023 Soil Test
Well, this one puzzles me a bit - I can't find a reason why the pH (an indirect measure) is as low as it is at 6.1 when all of the ingredients that make it up are not deficient. Go figure... I like the TEC - you're pretty close to the "perfect 10", and on top of an OM number of 5.05 (Great!). I'm im...

Here's how I see OM levels: Below 1% is Beach Sand, 1-2% is poor, 2-3% is so-so, 3-4% is OK, 4-5% is good, and >5% is great. Let's see - you have Beach Sand and you are at 0.69%% It has the nutrient-holding potential of beach sand, Peat Moss and compost (including composted leaves) are excellent if ...
