Re: What's happening where you live?
Things have now calmed down. Very little rain in about 3 weeks, which is good because some areas have finally dried out to normal (not all have). Still above average temps by 10-15 degrees. Today hit 65-67 as an extreme example. Next week is supposed to go back down to normal though (mid 30s to 40F,...

Re: Calculating Fertilizer analysis of a compound?
And regarding the acid-base issue:
There is also a ready-made Potassium acetate-based product that has a 2-0-21 analysis. The 2% N is urea. But Potassium acetate solution is acidic, and urea solution is basic. How can you have both together in there like this and be ok? Solution at equilibrium??

Re: Calculating Fertilizer analysis of a compound?
Yes, the burn potential is real. Thankfully I've never had it happen. That's why I'm reviewing all the calculations with you. The pre-made product recommends 2-5oz per thousand. I'm basing my revipe and rates off of it. Of course, I would go with the low end at 2oz of solution in a gallon and a half...

Morph,
Do you happen have any good non-sulfur-containing moss killer recipes?

Re: Calculating Fertilizer analysis of a compound?
Morph, Thank you for pausing your workout routine to answer. Good to know I was on the right track. Apparently a tidbit 3 years of college chemistry just translated into real world stuff, and didn't all go in one ear and out the other! I didn't stop to figure out where the 0.0083 comes from, yet, bu...

Re: Home Brewing
bpgreen, If you're on here lately and see this, I wanted to ask if you had any experience with the company "Morebeer.com". Apparently they also have some physical store locations. Asking because I'm looking at purchasing some Potassium Carbonate for use in a "home brew" Summer foliar lawn fertilizer...

Re: Calculating Fertilizer analysis of a compound?
Yeah. Looking forward to both of them commenting on this.
In the meantime, I thought of something:
Maybe my KCl example was off due to the fact that we measure "K" in "K2O equivalents" and not just "elemental K". If so, I'm not sure how this works into the calculation, exactly.

Calculating Fertilizer analysis of a compound?
How do you calculate the fertilizer analysis of a chemical/biological compound orvmolecule given the molecular or ionic formula of the compound or molecule and nothing more? Is it as simple as totaling the ionic or molecular mass and finding the percentage of it that the target nutrient comprises? I...

Re: Home-made vole repellent longevity after significant rain?
So far, it looks like most snow this year is short-lived, so I probably will not even bother. Actually, the ground is now frozen again after that 48 hour cold period and -8F temps the other night. Probably will thaw again in a week or two...

Re: Moss. Moss. Moss.
Moss germination, not "less" germination. (If germination is the right word for moss.)

Re: Moss. Moss. Moss.
Maybe the soil is more compacted and held more moisture where the mower wheels traversed, making the environment better for less germination. Do you use a light push mower or a heavier riding mower?

Re: Milorganite vs Grains
Morph, Interesting. I learned something from your post above: that biosolid fertilizers can easily have at least 0.5% or even 1% Potassium despite being marked 0. This is slightly more reassuring to know. Maybe they list 0 because the variability is too high and it's under 1% just as often as it's e...

Re: Winters with lots of rain: less snow?
Yeah. That's the answer: it's warm enough that the amount of rain is excessive and ridiculous. We had 13+ inches of rain since Thanksgiving! Buried is not an exaggeration had it been snow instead. 125 inches of snow in two months? No thanks. And that's 3-4x the normal Winter total. Drought is pretty...

Home-made vole repellent longevity after significant rain?
This is my third year using Andy's Castor oil and dish soap vole repellent recipe (with my own additional ingredients added in last year--peppermint and hot pepper). No vole damage either year after having damage in the previous few years prior to using it. The thing is, since I put down the repelle...

Oh, and I actually did a charity mow on Jan. 2nd (to clean up leaves). Never mowed in Jan. before. Got clippings, too.

Re: What's happening where you live?
Our weather is starting to trend like Turf_toe's has been the last decade, the last few years. Maybe an inch of snow so far, but about 9 inches of rain and counting since Thanksgiving. (That would equate to like 85 inches of snow, which would be a disaster.) It's bad enough that the ground is satura...

Winters with lots of rain: less snow?
This is the 3rd La Nina Winter in a row, I believe. Combined with the "atmospheric river"/onshore flow hitting the West Coast, it's causing January to be a bit warmer than average. We are still getting all the precipitation we normally do so far, just that more of it seems to be rain than in an aver...

12/6/22: One final mow to clean everything up. The rain is ridiculous lately. Abnormally dry should be over any day.
