Re: An Intro from newbe
Oops! Sorry for the confusion. I mixed up your story with someone else... The story that I thought was yours was a person that I told to water 1" per week, all at once. Two days later, they said that they were a high-school calculus teacher, but despite two days of calculus they couldn't figure out ...

Re: An Intro from newbe
My father in law, who waters at least 3 days a week, I've tried to talk to him about the benefits of watering infrequently said, "I've been watering my entire life" ok then, as I think to myself "I wonder what really killed your last yard" (my mother in law blamed mulch mowing) lol I told my wife, ...

Re: mowing the hillside
The link works fine for me.
Pretty funny.
I have a slope too, but can't get the method to work with a reel mower. It just tumbles down the hill.

Well it's about time! Decided to play major-league Ball, eh? They say that the first step in Recovery is to admit that you have an Addiction. The good news is that you have found the home where we all admit our Addiction. The bad news is that nobody here has ever Recovered. You did bring your ticket...

Re: Handheld pH tester?
If you're looking for the difference between pH 5.0 and pH 6.0, yeah - they're OK. If you looking to test small differences, they're useless. I have one and use it occasionally to roughly measure the pH in the wild (undisturbed) soil in a vicinity.

I have an idea - let's pay $200 a bag to deliberately grow "Elite Poa Annua"! I'm sure that it will die immediately or become infested with KBG.

David: All over the board. When I was raising good PR, I had to overseed each year at to replace 15% winter kill. But Poa A was almost unheard of. Last year I had a massive Poa Triv explosion on my first renovation attempt. To be fair, the last two years have been following slit seeding/aeration.

May 1st is a special day at the Poa Plantation. It is "Assessment Day". After giving the grass a chance to get up on it's feet, on May 1 I build a Plan for the season. 2010 Assessment 50% KBG "Emblem" (20% has Powdery Mildew, mostly light/moderate) 30% Poa Annua 15% Chickweed 5% miscellaneous uglies...

Re: Anyone up for interpreting a soil sample?
The manufacturer's recommendation is for 4.5 lbs/1000 for the "regular rate" and 9 lbs/1000 for the "heavy rate". It seems that UMASS is not distinguishing between Calcitic and Dolomitic when they specifiy the application rate, which appears to be a mistake. I've had an email into them for a month t...

Unk: I'll take care of the Micro's, and take a shot at the CEC question, too... For micro's, you need the full suite: Twenty Mule Team Borax (locally at the grocery store), and Manganese Sulfate (NOT Magnesium Sulfate), Zinc Sulfate and Copper Sulfate from EBAY. What is your square footage again? No...

Re: Anyone up for interpreting a soil sample?
Picked up 2 bags of pennington calcitic lime today. Will put it down tomorrow. Huge difference in the price of calcitic lime vs the dolomitic. It's like $15.00 versus $4.00 per bag. Naturally, I need the more expensive one. Isn't that always the case? You can't compare the products on a pound-for-p...

Cactus: We're going to get off-topic here, but I have to agree/disagree. I think when we answer questions here, it's VERY important to understand where the reader is coming from with his/her question. If an OP asks a simple, straightforward question, we owe them a simple straightforward answer. Havi...

I noticed that there were no Comments at the bottom of the Article. Are you trying to behave again this week, David? Articles like that remind me of the AAL articles of Lawn Care. The ByLine on the bottm reads "Joe Smith is majored in Journalism and Political Science". Yeah, and can write an article...

The water authority guy came out to do an audit when I bought the house two years ago and I asked him about the "water infrequently, but deeply" strategy and he told me that in our climate the grass needed to be watered almost daily. I'm going to be gentle, politically-correct and be careful about ...

OK - it's 0.5 tablespoons of the Twenty Mule Team Borax and 1.5 tablespoons of the Copper Sulfate per 1000 sq ft for you. Have you read the application instructions 2,000 times yet on other posts, or would you like a refresher course?

Sort of. To stick with an analogy, it's more like giving them an all-you-can-eat banquet, Barry White music and taking away their microherd birth control pills. They multiply and multiply. Their teensy bodies are made of protein, so they use the Nitrogen sources in the soil to build better bodies 12...
