Re: Longer Article on Soil Management

LOL. I can't read Russian. I have it translated to Ancient Sumarian - then I'm good-to-go. ;-)

Actually my son works with a person from Moscow. I'm having him see if the Cyrillic for "Ammonia Gas" and "Nitrogen" are the same, or if the translation is so-so...

Re: Longer Article on Soil Management

I would like to see your thoughts on this article written in 1900. Okay, so it's written in Russian  David: A 1900 article written in Russian? You Mods must have worked hard to come up with that one for the new Mod :hello: I'm gonna skip the multiple translation refreshes and just read it in...

Re: NPK - Up, down and all around

Gary: Bestlawn covered most of it - I only have a little to add. Potassium tends to hang around in the soil except in sandy soils. If your soil is loamy or clay, it will hang around a long time. If you leave your clippings, then don't keep adding Potassium unless your soil test drops below 150 PPM (...

Re: Seed Superstore - has anyone heard of them?

Nah - I'm just expressing my frustration that typing "kentucky", "bluegrass", "zinfandel" into Google leads to so little useful information. Why can't they name cultivars with names like the tech industry, where names like "AMD" lead to intelligent answers, like "DID YOU MEAN 'AND' "? LOL

Re: Seed Superstore - has anyone heard of them?

That's because I keep drinking all the Zinfandel, and then hitting the Shiraz, Gary  Bestlawn, is there anyway to update the list with the owning company's name? I try to get the PDF spec sheets but get 10,000 hits for wineries on "Zinfandel" and "Shiraz" (Neither Ernest nor Julio wanted to d...

Longer Article on Soil Management

I'm going to be writing a longer Article on Soil Management for the BESTLAWN INFO Articles area. Actually, it will be three articles - one for the New or Casual Lawn Owner that covers the basics of soil testing, the interpretation of results and soil amending; one for the Experienced Lawn Owner that...

Re: Seed Superstore - has anyone heard of them?

Hey, Eriocaulon: I noticed that you're looking for the cultivar "Emblem" - so am I. I need to do a backyard (half-acre) renovation this year and was thinking of getting 50 lbs of it and doing the following: (1) do a big test patch in the backyard this Spring (I know late summer is better, but I want...

By the way, David - I think that my wife agrees with your definition of a weed. She says that the difference between a weed and a perennial is $8.99

Re: Seed Superstore - has anyone heard of them?

OK - let's see where my priorities are: it took me 10 minutes to find the camera, and 1 minute to find the SeedSuperStore buckets :good: http://i663.photobucket.com/albums/uu351/ahejnas/BL_001-1.jpg The larger bucket is about 2 feet tall and is very similar to what you'd find for a tall kitchen garb...

Re: Does Mir-A-Cal work?

The book makes a pretty convincing case that weeds (especially deep-rooted ones) play a very important part in a "line of succession" that moves nutrients from subsoil to the surface and topsoil. Some plants ("weeds") can succeed in a soil that is (for example) Calcium-poor. They get Calcium from de...

Man, forsythia? I got all excited because the Sugar Maples up here in the Hudson Valley actually started to have the sap running. Now I'm all depressed again. Anybody want to trade some flowers for some maple syrup?

Re: Hello All

Gary asked me to read this thread and mull it over. I have to admit this, in advance: "when the only tool you have is a hammer, the world suddenly appears to be filled with nails" Like many of the previous posters, I look at the problem from my strongest suit, which is soil chemistry. In this case, ...

Does Mir-A-Cal work?

I have always been a pretty big believer in maintaining a pretty high level of Magnesium in the soil of my lawns - after all, my logic goes, Magnesium is to Chlorophyll what Iron is to the blood of animals. This winter, however, I located a fair amount of research that seems to indicate that a good ...

Been there, done that. We tried it on one side of the yard to see if they would stay away from that side and favor the other side. They did. For a month. It gave the hosta a chance to become extra tasty. The neighborhood actually had a resident eastern coyote for awhile. I did not attempt to collect...

Preventing Deer Damage

My home is situated on a 1-acre piece of mature property that is surrounded by wooded land on three sides, and is near a golf course. Just across the street is 20,000 acres of wooded land that belongs to the West Point (USMA) military academy. In turn the West Point academy land adjoins hundreds of ...
