Re: News Flash! New York Times Likes Mulching Leaves!
Meanwhile, in Minneapolis (from last week, before the snow hit last night) ... "Leaf-bagging under scrutiny as a wasteful expense and pointless chore From the weekend, one of those odd collisions of news that occur from time to time: - In Minneapolis, the city is extending its yard-waste pickup prog...

Re: Rate Your 2013 Season
80. This was the second year of going (nearly) all organic - nearly because I still used pre-emergent to deal with potential weeds. My goals were to: - continue with lots of Milorganite as the go-to fertilizer - reduce watering - reduce chemicals - thicken the turf - soften up the soil (the soil her...

Re: Cold weather is here
Just north and east of you, in the Twin Cities. We had single digits overnight and into the 20s yesterday and today, but back up to upper 40s by weekend. We had a dusting of snow last week, not the 3-5" predicted for the Twin Cities. The snow was early for us (didn't stick) by about a month and two ...

Re: How Much Do You Mulch ?
I mulch very little, basically not even enough to cover any of my lawn 100%. My street does run as an east west wind tunnel with the prevailing winds, so I end up with leaves, trash cans, etc blowing down the street and occasionally in my side yard. :D Me, too. I will mulch what is still around aft...

Re: Sod in November?
If the sod doesn't establish roots well, it will freeze just like a piece of carpet would. Will it work? I'd guess 50/50 chance at this point in Westchester (slightly south of me). It's going to be all about when the ground freezes hard this year. Yeah, my goof told me that it was all about the roo...

Re: Sod in November?
Water as long a possible. We are just east of the Twin Cities, Minnesota. First frost tends to hit in mid-October, first full inch snowfall in mid-November (may melt away in days), soil temps drop below 40 in the first or second week of November. When we built our house in 2010, it was completed in ...

Re: Winterization: Urea + rain
I chickened out. I'm waiting until this weekend. [ Post made via Android ] http://aroundtheyard.com/forums2/images/mobile/Android.png Probably for the best. I dropped tonight as the growth seriously slowed and the five-day soil temp forecast at 4-inch depth is forecast to be below 40 here (eastern ...

Anyone in MN make the drop yet? Had highs of 38-41 and lows in of 26° for the last week... and doesn't look to be warming up too much. Re: Reminder: "The Pause"
USDA has a decent site. They have probes that measure different variables and record the data. Here are the sites in Minnesota. Unfortunately the closest one to you is Crescent Lake, so take it for what it is worth. http://www.wcc.nrcs.usda.gov/scan/Minnesota/minnesota.html Click the location. Then...

Re: Soil temps hanging in there this year compared to last
Soil temps doing the same thing here and have been between 52 - 55 degrees since early Oct. They just keep holding steady here in MN and have extended my fall season out by 2 weeks later than last year. I can tell a big difference from this year to last and my grass still has a steady rate of growt...

Re: How Lambeau field stays nice into the winter.
Keep in mind Heating system: Installed in 2007 and contains more than 30 miles of radiant heating pipe, which can maintain a root-zone temperature of 55-plus degrees to keep the ground from freezing during the season's latter months. First system was put in by Vince Lombardi for 1967 season (failed...

We have Fleet Farm here (or Farm Fleet; I always get them mixed up but it is the same company but operates under both names depending on the state - I live close to the MN/WI border, so I can go to either). "Mills Fleet Farm" and "Blain's Farm and Fleet" are two different companies owned and operat...

Anybody in central Iowa, the new Fleet Farm has it for $5.95 for the 36lb bag. Maybe I shouldn't tell anybody and get mine first!! Sent from my iOS device using the Yard Help App Nice. Re: Scotts Natural Lawn Food outlawed in CT
Been banned statewide in Minnesota for almost ten years, following a Twin Cities (I think the whole seven-county area) ban for at least a few years before). You can still find it as it is available for starter lawns. The legislation was directed at trying to clean up the lakes, ponds, rivers and str...

Re: Getting Started
I finally got around to going to Starbucks on the way home from work today. Two bags of the stuff mixed with some Mahogany saw dust made about 25 gallons to spread on the lawn. Probably won't do much on 12k but it's a start. I'm thinking I may want to stop by there every day after work and pick up ...

2k per thousand ... diluted, cause that stuff is thick. Based on this thread I once read:kausverm wrote:Ron, what was the frequency of applying molasses and shampoo treatment? Can you also post the rate at which you applied? Thanks a lot.

Any guesses as to what type of grass it is? The contractor never gave us the specs - I can try again with them.

Re: Scott's Organic discontinued at Lowe's
Well, after a minor snafu at the front desk I loaded up the order into my truck. Wandered back into the garden section and noticed 6 more bags sitting on the shelf. Why not clear the place out? I still walked out at just over $50 total. http://s11.postimg.cc/avvpny3b3/Scotts.jpg Looks like I'll be ...
