Re: Adding Fine Fescue to Tall Fescue mix

:x Red fescues will definitely tolerate much less light--down to under 3 hours of sun per day, and even no sun if there's good north light and reflected light from other houses (I have KBG doing tolerably well on reflected light). As per floppiness, I can't say, except that it will minimize over tim...

Adding Fine Fescue to Tall Fescue mix

As I continue to work on the Poa Annua from last year’s renovation, it has become clear to me that I have a strip on the shady side of my house that simply can’t support KBG. I had a Tall Fescue/Bewitched mix there in the past. It did okay. I’ll try that mix again. Should I consider adding a creepin...

Re: GRYD’s 2020 KBG Backyard Renovation

That makes sense.. I went ahead and ordered 10 lbs of Midnight Kentucky Bluegrass from Outsidepride Seed Source. Hopefully this will be a decision I'm happy I made as this is my first time doing a full renovation. My plan is to cut out the current sod, apply some top soil and level it to get rid of...

Re: GRYD’s 2020 KBG Backyard Renovation

Hand pulling is the way to go if you can. Thanks Northeastlawn. I hand pulled Poa in previous renovations. This time, however, there’s a whole lot and I’m older and not in great health. I have been pulling some. I agree that Poa typically survives the summers here in New England. I watched it die o...

Re: GRYD’s 2020 KBG Backyard Renovation

This was one area that had lots of Poa. I dug some out but for the most part I used glyphosate to kill it. Will switch to Tenacity now and set it up for summer kill. Any advice on getting the KGB to spread would be appreciated. The fact that both Arcadia and Zinfandel are aggressive cultivars and ma...

Re: GRYD’s 2020 KBG Backyard Renovation

PM's not an issue and usually does reduce as grass matures. If not, I cannot recommend the normal dose of Daconil in water because the normal dose of Daconil in water is not approved for use on lawns, and you cannot put the normal dose of Daconil in a sprayer and spray it lightly (again, that's the...

Re: GRYD’s 2020 KBG Backyard Renovation

Hi Guys/Gals, I’ll get some photos up soon. Renovation weathered the winter fine. I must have frogged something up because I was hit with a boatload of Poa Annua. I took a page out Morph’s 2007? playbook and used glyphosate to kill most of it. Now I’m feeding it heavily with organics and keeping a p...

Re: GRYD’s 2020 KBG Backyard Renovation

Some updated pictures. I wish I seeded 2 weeks earlier. I really think in New England you can seed the first week of August. My seed went down the last week of August. Grass is having a harder time establishing but it’s coming along. https://i.postimg.cc/HJDypFyg/562510-A6-72-E7-497-D-B8-DE-702-CA7-...

Re: Moss in Renovation

I am now finding a little bit of real moss in my renovation. Can it be treated with something now?
Please advise.

That is likely Cyanobacteria and it has a tendency to show up when there is bare soil and water present (sound like like Reno?).

It tends to disappear as the grass emerges - it doesn't compete well and is a bottom-dweller...
Thanks! I take it I can ignore it.

My question is not a joke. There is an item often reported as moss that isn't even close (but it's green). Please let me know,
Andy,

I think it’s a type of algae and not moss. It’s only on surface of ground. It’s not raised up.

Thanks!

Moss in Renovation

I seem to have some moss growing in an area of my renovation that doesn’t get as much sun this time of year. Is it something I should and could treat at this time?
Thanks.

Looks swee-ee-eet! If one has irrigation, a dry spell is the best thing for a renovation -- no washouts to deal with, and watering can be nicely controlled.

Love the stepping stones in the grass!
Thanks!

Previously washed out area looks good now. I’ve been able to control the watering during this dry spell.

Re: GRYD’s 2020 KBG Backyard Renovation

My apologies for not posting sooner. Seed went down last week of August. Had one washout but it will be fine. I used 40% Mazama and 20% each of Bewitched, Arcadia and Zinfandel. Arcadia and Zinfandel are aggressive. I wanted that. The back gets trashed by the dogs every winter. Also, the area gets s...
