Re: 2019: What Did You Do On Your Lawn Today?

Yesterday was beautiful here. I took the last half of the day off work and did some maintenance on the trimmer and mower. Mowed and trimmed my parents yard as well as mine. It is about to get cold again, but it won't stay that way for long around here. Ordered a Pro Plugger today to take the soil sa...

Re: 2018: What did you do on your lawn today?

Got out yesterday and did a cleanup mow of the yard yesterday. Also mulched around the mailbox with a leftover bag of mulch. It felt good to get out and do something after sitting on the couch for a month or so. Winterizer went down about 2 weeks ago.

Re: Where Are You With Fall Regimens?

In the middle of the pause here in the transition zone. I'm don't expect top growth to stop until at least mid-December. We haven't had a frost yet, but we have below freezing weather coming in the next couple of days which should slow things down a bit.

Mulched the leaves for the 3rd time since Saturday. Tonight I had to relocate a lot of them to less dense areas around the yard.

Re: Transition Zone & Aggressive Fall Nitrogen

I'm honestly not sure where I pulled that first frost number from. I just googled it again and sure enough you are right. How did I get THAT wrong :banghead: . I'll at least be able to get in another application or two. Thanks for sharing your experience and enlightening me on my average first frost...

Re: Transition Zone & Aggressive Fall Nitrogen

Andy, thank you for the input and experience. My notes have been pretty poor and my memory isn't perfect. I've taken better notes this year so I guess in a few years I can make a more educated decision with more data. I will play it safe until then. I do know for several years I haven't winterized u...

Transition Zone & Aggressive Fall Nitrogen

On my 2016 TTTF reno backyard I started applying 0.5 lbs/K of Nitrogen mid-August. It never really responded like I am used to seeing with weekly N applications. This past weekend's application of N has done wonders for the grass. This is the most noticable change I have seen. It really perked up! I...

Re: Feeling doomed and trying to plan

Once you get your soil interpreted, you will have a plan for next year. Follow the soil amendments, follow the triangle approach for weeds, and start making your renovation/overseed plans for next fall. Your soil may not be perfect by then, but you will have it heading in the right direction.

Re: Getting rid of this particular bad grass and growing the new (Help)

TNMan,

I live in Knoxville too. If you do get your soil interpreted here these guys will tell you what fertilizer to put down and when. I get most of my fertilizer at the Ace Hardware/ AgCentral Co-Op in Maryville. It is much cheaper than the stuff at Lowes or Home Depot and Lowes.

Re: Brown Patch Identification?

Dig down in the dead spots and see if you find any grubs. If you do, go get 24 hour grub control and water it in. You can throw seed down after watering it in.

Are there any lesions on the blades? It could be some kind of fungus as well.

Re: Heads-Up: It's Time to Talk "Leaf Mulching"!

My yard is less than 6,000sqft with 4 large trees. There is one part of the yard that is about 750sqft that has a tree in the dead center of it. I typically relocate some of the leaves that fall from that tree to less leaf dense parts of the yard. Other than that the soil has no trouble gobbling up ...

Re: Lawn Renovation Help!

You're off to a good start. As it matures it will tiller and fill in quite a bit. I would personally spread seed on the very thin areas. Spend time just walking on that area and use a rake to get the seed into the soil. Then spread some peat moss over those areas. I'm not sure I would drag a roller ...

Re: Scotts wizz setting for urea

I typically only fill it 3/4 of the way full. I quickly move my wrist back and forth as I walk at a very fast pace. This gives a larger sprerad pattern and keeps the product flowing. I still tilt if forward a little but not too much to cause problems. The more you use it the more comfortable you get...

Re: Multiple Tests Question

Andy,

Thanks for your reply. I appreciate all you do around here and enjoy reading your replies.

Do you know of any companies that offer a decent soil interpretation for the extra yards? They really don't need ST6 perfection but I also don't want to apply anything that isn't needed.

Multiple Tests Question

Is it frowned upon to request 3 soil interpretations a year from you kind folks of ST6? I've been getting 2 yearly as I take care of my lawn as well as my parents. I've recently added my in-laws 1K front yard to my care and it needs soil help! I don't won't to be seen as a mooch or taking advantage ...

I weigh out the proper amount of urea, put it in the Wizz, set it to #3 and walk around the yard until it’s all gone.
This! Although I use #4 and walk really fast. Be sure to keep the Wizz clean or it gunks up and doesn't spread as well.

Re: Aggressive nitrogen on TTTF

I currently take care of my yard and my parents yard, both TTTF. The part of the yards that get plenty of sun but not baked respond great to the aggressive nitrogen regimen at 1lb/K. The grass generally just looks healthy and thicker. It does grow a bit faster too, but I don't think it grows as fast...

Re: 2018: What did you do on your lawn today?

I sprayed FS (not FAS) for the first time today. I sprayed 2oz/k on the TTTF back yard. I plan to rinse it off tomorrow morning. I'm curious to see how it turns out. This was more of a test since I need to more in the next couple of days.

I'm not sure if the lawn can taste it but I can.

Re: Fall Nitrogen Regimens

I started the aggressive nitrogen regime this year on September 1st. I put down my 3rd application yesterday. I've noticed a little change on my TTTF but nothing to really get me excited. The triv is starting to really wake up though. Luckily I have a bunch of Velocity and started those applications...
