Re: Nick's Soil Sample and yard pic from new home
Welcome to the site! The above recommendations from kalepatrick, HanLawn, and HoosierLawnGnome for fertilization match with what I would suggest from looking at your soil test. (It's nice to see that all three give consistent recommendations!) Do what they suggest and you'll be improving your grass ...

Re: drought / heat stress and monostands
After the first summer I now know the areas to watch that first indicate heat and drought stress. :good: I wish I knew how to recognize heat stress or drought stress in the lawn. I just don't know what to look for. It would be really cool if there were a video of one of our lawns which showed a tim...

Looks awesome!
I wonder why the grass seed didn't germinate on the irrigation trench lines? It doesn't really matter, as by June 1, I would venture to say those are completely gone from the new spreading grass, but I'm curious...

Re: too late to plant Kentucky Bluegrass in Pittsburgh?
I live in Pittsburgh (southwestern PA). Is it too late to seed KBG this weekend Sep 27 or early next week? In an ideal situation, you would have had seed down about a month ago to give you time for unexpected setbacks (a washout, or sprinkler failure, or finding there are wheat seeds in your straw,...

Re: drought / heat stress and monostands
Rather than a monostand vs. northern mix distinction, could it be a relatively new lawn vs. an old established lawn thing?

Way to roll with the punches and press through the obstacles on this one!
It's looking great!
What did you end up doing with the sod from the front -- did you move it to the back?

Re: Second Floor, Elevator Going Down
A lower height coupled with increased fertilizing and good mild (root growing weather) cool weather - helps fill in thin areas and helps develop thicker grass i believe. Thanks, that's exactly the kind of reason I was looking for -- a reason to cut low in the fall other than just avoiding "too long...

Re: My large scale reno.
Oh, by the way, the biggest challenge of establishing grass is proper watering for the grass seeds to germinate. The top surface of the soil where the seeds are needs to be kept moist but not soaked for about 7-21 days for KBG. This is going to be a big challenge on an acre without irrigation. Fescu...

Any reason to stay away from this blend of seed, it is at Rural King, I can't find it on their web site. It is "Estate sun and shade mix" Shows Perennial Rye Grass 34.53, Creeping red fescue 34.26, Chewings fescue 14.77, and KY Bluegrass 14.51. All show Germ H % at 85. As you can see from the pictu...

Re: Quasi Reno - thanks to significant grub damage
Yep, going to round up the whole thing tonight. Will figure out the rest depending on how fast it all dies and when I can get back it there. My thought, given that you are seeking a compressed timeline to get seed down soon would be something like the following: * Roundup ASAP * 2 days later - mow ...

Re: Quasi Reno - thanks to significant grub damage
The more I think about this, the more I am convinced that the solution you're most likely to be happy with in the long run is to kill it all now and start over, presuming that you have or can get the seed you need.

Re: Quasi Reno - thanks to significant grub damage
I have no idea if this would work, but what if you just mowed it all at a height of about 2.5 inches -- high enough to be well above the real grass, but low enough to take out almost all of the wheat -- would the wheat recover from the mowing?

Re: Weekly urea apps
I'm curious to hear what others recommend on this, too. If you've been applying urea regularly without getting any burning and thus have confidence that you can spread it evenly, then you should be okay with spreading a 2nd 1-lb app after 5 days instead of 7 days. I would be wondering the opposite, ...

Bare essentials for a northern lawn renovation: - Seed - Water including hoses and sprinklers - Tenacity - Glyphosate Just wanted to mention that the above "bare essentials" depend on grass type. Tenacity is contraindicated for new seedings of fine fescue, so I didn't use Tenacity in my renovation ...
