Re: Ken-n-Nancy's 2014 Back Yard Renovation / Side Yard Over

Meant to post these progress photos last week, but too much work to do to post photos! Figured I'd add a couple for those that prefer to see progress in photos instead of words. Photo 1 - Spreading Loam. (I used the bricks so that the landscaping rake would screed the loam to a uniform depth. I had ...

White Fuzzy Growth (fungus?) on Soil 1st Wet Day after Milo

I'm looking for some help identifying some sort of white fuzzy growth all over the surface of the soil on the 1st Wet Day after a Milorganite application. Any ideas on what it is? Should I be worried? Background: Applied Milorganite to only front yard 5 days ago. Mostly dry weather since. Lawn is No...

Re: Is Sulfate of Potash always 0-0-50?

For a winterizing product... For a maintenance product.... Those both seem like excellent products, but I have no idea how I would be able to purchase those here in NH as a homeowner, rather than as a greenskeeper who would be buying product by the pallet. Anybody in NH/MA have any experience with ...

Re: Is Sulfate of Potash always 0-0-50?

An Agway near me in Schaghticoke, NY makes their own fertilizer. I called and asked for Sulfate of Potash, 0-0-50. He said it's 0-0-61, granular and white. I asked if it was Muriate of Potash and he said no, Muriate is red. Earlier this month, I called about 12 places near me looking for "Sulfate o...

Re: Spring 2014 Results

The next question is: are those the results you'd expect (as far as N, P, K levels) for a sample taken just prior to the first spring fertilization, given that the lawn was sufficiently fertilized the prior year? I trust Andy's assessment that if that test is reliable, the lawn has been significant...

Re: Gryd's 2014 Front Yard Renovation Take 2

I go back to work Monday after a long vacation. I don't know how you guys find the time to renovate while working full time! It would seem close to impossible without taking some vacation time. I can see it now when you get back to work... "Hey Gryd, what did you do on vacation?" " I had a 'staycat...

Re: Gryd's 2014 Front Yard Renovation Take 2

To think I was worried about seeding without using some type of slit seeder or aerator. Based on my observation I see zero difference from when I used to use a machine and this renovation where I seeded, rolled and top dressed. Thanks to Andy, JG and anyone else who convinced me that I'd be okay. I...

Re: Triangle approach - pictorial progress and questions

Thanks Ken-n-Nancy .. Do you know which weeds you have successfully killed so far? In all honesty, I don't know what they all were -- I took the Triangle Approach to heart and didn't bother to identify them -- as long as they disappeared, I didn't care what they were! ;) The only things that didn't...

Re: Triangle approach - pictorial progress and questions

My backyard is full of weeds and I do not want to do another reno. We have a ton of threads about reno, but not too many about triangle approach. So I thought I will start one and show pictures of what I have and how it turned out. tnkrer, thanks for doing this! I had great success with the Triangl...

Re: Ken-n-Nancy's 2014 Back Yard Renovation / Side Yard Over

Is there creeping red fescue in your mix? That stuff slowly spreads. Between that and the 10% KBG you should be okay. The mix is 35% creeping red fescue. I guess time will tell how it does with filling in... If all else fails send the wife out to over seed in a couple years. Sorry, just had to get ...

Re: Ken-n-Nancy's 2014 Back Yard Renovation / Side Yard Over

How much shade do you have in your backyard? Do you get any sun back there? I wish I knew how to quantify that a bit better. The sky is open enough in back that lots of indirect light gets down into the back yard, but there are some sections that see hardly any *direct* sunlight. Andy asked the sam...

Re: Ken-n-Nancy's 2014 Back Yard Renovation / Side Yard Over

You mean to tell me your wife does this with you? My wife won't so much as pick up a stick! In fact she hates the fact that I'm all into lawn care even though I'd probably be a lazy sack if I didn't get out there and work on the yard. If you don't mind me asking I see you included your wife in your...

Re: Ken-n-Nancy's 2014 Back Yard Renovation / Side Yard Over

You're lucky they were able to deposit it in the back yard for you! I have to haul it from my driveway to a wheelbarrow to the area.... We were fortunate about that -- I had expected to have to wheelbarrow it from around the side of the house, as I didn't think the dump truck would be able to make ...

Re: Ken-n-Nancy's 2014 Back Yard Renovation / Side Yard Over

Well, the 16 yards (tons) of new loam/compost mix are spread in the back yard at a pretty uniform 2 inches depth, it's been rolled, and fallowing has commenced. Wish I had started sooner to have more time to fallow, but it is what it is. Have the sprinklers set up for short 4-times-a-day watering to...

9 lbs / K of a good calcitic lime (encap, pennington, mag-i-cal) now and when the ground thaws this spring in the front. Drop 9 lbs / K of a good calcitic lime now on the side. We got 90 pounds of calcitic lime down today on the 10K of the front and side! I (Ken) wasn't quite able to finish the job...

... I mowed an area down to 1.5 inches. Hit it lightly with a plant growth regulator and over seeded with Jump Start Kentucky Bluegrass. 27 day will be better - Ca will displace K - and we don't want to throw money away. Thanks for letting me know; I would have botched that up! Yeah, you'd think the salt from winter would be leaching through too, particularly in a sandy soil. If it's not watering with softened water, maybe it's anot...

Re: Ken-n-Nancy Soil Test - Summer 2014

Quick note on mulching.. if you have a push mower it might be better to upgrade to a more powerful machine. I tried different blades on my old one, and no matter what it just couldn't chop them up. I bought the Honda HRX and that thing mulches tall thick grass / leaves/ anything ;-) I do have an el...
